Making money online

These days it seems everyone wants to make money from the internet, it's a craze that shows no signs of dying down even after 10 years or so since the "dotcom millionaire" fad fell off it's perch.

There are all sorts of scams and methods for doing it, and probably over a million "get rich quick" e-books which essentially tell you all the same thing - buy links cheaply to pages filled with well-paying adverts.  A scam that will lead to you being banned from most ad-networks unless you actually write genuine content for those pages.

The path to making sustainable revenue is a long one.  And it starts with you.

If you own a website, then you're one step of the game.  If you own one that you love creating content for, and love lavishing hours of your spare time on, then you're practically there.

"Content is king" is a very relevant saying when it comes to making money online.  Unless you have content people want to read, then nobody will visit your site, and if nobody visits your site, then nobody views or clicks your adverts.

If you have content, you will generally have visitors. So, how to monetize those visitors.

Some people can manage very well with Google Adsense, and simply adding their code to their website which will generate some revenue for them.  Others need / want to earn more.

A way of doing this is to add several ad netwoks to your site - but not all at the same time.  You can do this by creating "tiers" of ad networks.

Pick three of the best paying ad networks - Google Adsense, Adsdaq, and Tribal Fusion.

All three offer you the chance to put in a "backup" ad code so that when they cannot serve an advert, they serve one from your "backup" network.

I use Adsdaq as my first level in my tier.  This network allows you to select an "ask price" for your ad space.  Your price is for 1,000 ad views.  If Adsdaq cannot serve an ad at that price, they serve "backup" ads, which is where you put your code for the next tier down in your network tree.

On my tree, Tribal Fusion sits on the tier below Adsdaq, so the ad code from Tribal Fusion goes in the "backup" tag section on Adsdaq, so that when Adsdaq cannot serve an advert, they serve Tribal Fusion's instead.

Tribal has a good fill rate, but not 100% - so any ads they cannot serve will go blank, but they too have a "backup ad" option.  This is where I put my Google Adsene code.

Whenever neither Adsdaq or Tribal Fusion can't serve adverts to my visitors, Google Adsense ads get shown instead, meaning that all of my ad inventory is sold and capable of making money.

I now cover the hosting costs of a dedicated server with server technician and the costs of several former footballers to write for my site - and they don't come cheap!
