GURNING

When you were younger and you made a funny face, did your mother like mine ever say "if the wind changes your face will stay like that forever" it used to frighten me to death and I would stop it in a flash. Of course, now that I am a little older and wiser I know better but I have used it a couple of times with my own children.

Making faces or Gurning as it is called these days has become a very serious business. The Gurn, the face you make, has made Egremont in Cumbria U.K world famous because the World Gurning Championships are held there every year.

The tradition dates back to the year 1266 at the Egremont Crab Fair, competitors put a horses collar over their head and pull faces the competitor who gets the loudest applause wins.

You can also enter a competition by submitting a picture of your funniest face online and a winner is voted for each month in an online poll. http://www.cumbria.uk.com/cumbria/fun/gurn.htm

I would add a picture of my best gurn but I do not want to scare you away.
