Makita Corporation was established in 1915 and originally known as the Makita Electric Works, in Nagoya, Japan. Its main thrust was in repairing electrical tools and equipments. By gaining knowledge and experience in this field of endeavor, it was able to expand its business - particularly to that of the power tool industry. By 1958, it produced its first ever portable electric planer. In April 1969 it introduced the first rechargeable power tool - the 6500D battery-operated drill.

Today, it is one of the world's leading manufacturer of power tools and parts in the portable power tools, woodworking machines, pneumatic tools, and many garden tools.
