Malcolm Gladwell's New Book Outliers
62I just read Outliers...WOW!
Malcolm is saying there are four things you need to be successful (this is my fast summary!):
1. To be a master in your field (at least 10,000 hrs--5 years at a full-time job)
2. To have good social skills and feel you are entitled (usually socio-economically based but doesn't have to be)
3. Be at the right place at the right time (he refers to the year you are born, your social standing, and what is happening in your area of interest, etc.)
4. Be aware of your legacies--both good and bad. Acknowledge your privileges and change your disadvantages by adopting the qualities and skills of #1 and #2--with the attitude that hard work is meaningful.
It's a great and easy read...

Thanks for this. I wanted to get the book, and now will definitely order it. Have you seen my hub page 10,000 Hours: The Awesome Power of Passion, Practice, and Persitence. I don't know if you can see it now, because they've flagged it for being overly promotional. I had a link to my website on. I took it off, made some changes and put it back up. But so far they haven't republished it -- although the stats say people are looking at it.
Hopefully, it'll be back up soon. I've been preaching the gospel of 10,000 hours for about 3 years, now, since I heard that the figure skaters who competed in the Turin Olympics had practiced their routines 14,000 time each, and the monks who tested off the scale for compassion had sat in meditation for over 10,000 hours. Cool!
Thanks!
