I'm interested in social issues, relationships, problems of daily living, jobs, exercise, poems and fiction, plus safer living conditions.

Extreme Sports

Many people love extreme sports for the adrenalin rush, and they relieve stress from their everyday life. Obviously people are living on the edge whie participating in these sports as they are dangerous.

Jake Loniak Story

This YouTube video is about an unusual motorcycle. This thing goes 75 MPH! I wonder why would anyone want to put themselves in that much jeopardy just to get an adrenaline rush? I had pictures in my head of critically injured patients that I have cared for as an RN. Regardless, I decided to check out the inventor.

Jake designed this machine while studying for a Transportation Design degree. "It uses nano phosphate batteries and artificial muscles to give it a theoretical top speed of 75mph." In the video he is trying to demoan unusualnstrate its functionality as you drive slow while standing, then lay it down for full speed.

While it is a futuristic looking machine, which is kind of interesting, I imagine this will lead to more advancement and design for travel. I guess Jake met his goal of developing a machine that is an extension of the body, but I keep going back in my mind to the dangers. The dangers may not lie with using the machine recklessly, but it is the fact that cars and trucks might find this machine hard to see, thus accidents occur. Secondly, there is little protection for your body. Other manufactures are coming out with their own version of similar types of machines.

How much of an adrenaline junkie would you need to be to lay that thing down on the highway at 75 MPH? Well, it seems there are all types of extreme sports for the adrenalin junkies of the world.

Extreme Sports and Physical Effects

Participating in sports that have a high level of inherent danger is the ultimate adrenaline rush and they are counter-cultural. Extreme sports (action or adventure sports) fall into this category. There is no exact definition for extreme sports because some activities like riding a motorcycle has a higher rate of injury but it isn't considered an extreme sport.

Marketing companies in the 1990s started using this counter-culture definition to promote the X-games. Extreme sports attract the youth but that doesn't mean some older adults don't participate in various extreme sports.

The adrenalin rush is considered to be a stress reliever by many men and I'm sure some ladies. When you work in a high stress atmosphere each day you must find a way to cope with that stress. Some people meditate, pray, or have a regular exercise workout. Others want the extreme adrenaline rush.

The danger and unpredictability that threaten your life is thought by some to save your life from the evils of stress. Stress can kill and there are medical journals that point that out statistically. One journal states that men with the highest stress jobs are at twice the risk of having a stroke. The most fit men based on treadmill tests have lower levels of cortisol, epinephrine and norepinephrine (a stress indicator) than the least fit men. Being fit doesn't mean you have to choose the most extreme sport. It could be mountain biking or some other form of intense exercise.

Extreme Air and Water Sports

The list of extreme sports is large and includes air sports, such as; BASE jumping, hang gliding, sky diving, high wire, bungee jumping, sky surfing, and sky flying.

There are many water extreme sports: barefoot water skiing (ouch), windsurfing, wakeboarding, powerboat racing, speed sailing, cliff diving (it always looks cool to see on TV with islanders that dive off beautiful cliffs), free-diving, jet skiing, open water swimming (maybe sharks figure into the danger), round the world yacht racing (sounds like fun), snorkeling, whitewater Kayaking, surfing, and speed sailing.

Extreme Land Sports

Extreme land sports are more than I would have imagined. They include indoor climbing, adventure racing, aggressive inline skating, BMX, caving, extreme motocross, extreme skiing, land and ice yachting, mountain biking, mountain boarding, outdoor climbing, sand boarding, skateboarding, snowboarding, snowmobiling, speed biking, speed skiing, scootering and street luge.

Summary

I know many people love extreme sports. I have three sons and they have all participated in some extreme sport, particularly when they were younger. When you think about amusement parks with the roller coasters that are so high and twist around, I think I would consider them an extreme sport.

The main thing is to be as safe as possible. Certainly don't participate if you have been drinking or taking any drugs. Safety gear for some sports is worth the time and investment. As an RN working in critical care, i can tell you road rash isn't pretty and it really hurts. So, chose your sport and have a good time.
