Managing Worry

Worry is something that we all succumb to at times in our lives. I was inspired this evenig to share a few interesting tactics that I've learned over the years for managing worry.

  • Weigh your pros and cons: when you've got an issue that you're worried about, a good way to tackle the issue is to sit down and write out a list of pros and cons around the issue - pros on one side and cons on the other. Even though you are worried about this issue, there may be some positives that you need to consider. Often times when unfortunate circumstances arise, there is a lesson for us at the core of the issue.
  • Face the issue head on: while you're at the writing table, write down the worst case scenario. Ask yourself, "what's the worst thing that can happen as a result of this? And in the event that the worst case scenario becomes a reality, what can I do about it? What are my options?" And be prepared, psychologically, to deal with the consequences. What this does is it forces you into a state of readiness for whatever happens. And if the end result of that worst case scenario is not so bad, you actually get to realize that it isn't by pondering over the issue in this manner.
  • Create an action plan: taking action always makes us feel better when we are faced with a tough issue. Even if all you can do is take little steps toward resolution, such as make a few phonecalls, or do some research online.
  • And lastly, set aside a certain time fo the day to spend "worrying." If you set aside a 1/2 hour in the evening to spend worrying about the issue, then throughout the day, every time the issue pops into your mind, you can sort of put it out of your mind and tell yourself that you will revisit it during your 1/2 hour allotment for worrying.
