Managing your ‘STATE’

“Change is rarely a matter of ability, it’s almost always a matter of motivation” - Sir John Harvey Jones

How you view the world or environment around you can change in many ways at any given point. Your ‘STATE’ changes with this.

>:You may see something you really like? Or dislike and instantly feel good or bad.

>: If you could imagine your favourite tune right now playing in the theatre of your mind your feelings change don’t they?

>: And when you think of someone really important in your life, someone you love or even loves you, your whole ‘STATE’ can change just then in that moment.

Your State consists of your thoughts and internal representation of the world coupled with your physical (physiology) feeling or awareness at any given time.

STATE Choice:

‘In the NLP model referred to as state control. The act of choosing deliberately to construct and inhabit a particular state in a given context, with the intention of achieving one's chosen outcome in that context.’

The ability to harness this inner state from within your own mind and to start to consider the art of “Cause” and “Effect” instead of pre-programmed responses based in emotion can radically improve your effectiveness both on a professional level and personal.

“Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself” - Leo Tolstoy

A close friend of mine recently took a bold decision to take a career break to reflect and decide on direction for the next opportunity. This decision alone was a big one, actually choosing to leave a role and the excellent rewards to recharge and identify the next opportunity.

During the time away from the world of working I remember the client talking through how beneficial the break was and how they were able to be much clearer on their future aspirations.

On one particular day they called to let me know they were going for an interview for an opportunity that really excited them. As we talked through the preparation and the things they had planned I can recall a particular time when their state was so challenged by the circumstance of the opportunity concerned that they had to re-set and change the way they were feeling.

Blessed by a significant journey to the business they spent the time visualizing times and memories of when they were at their best and most confident. This short time of reflection in preparation for the interview was what turned out later to be the most critical part of the whole experience. Actually changing every feeling and every response to one that is full of pep and anticipation. The client went on to secure the role.

We all have the ability to manage our responses and to begin to understand our own responses to the events that happen to us. Our body is made up of 49 strands of DNA, we have a conscious mind and an unconscious mind the skill is using our conscious state to harness our potential through our unconscious mind.

Our thoughts penetrate our every action and interaction with others, Deepak Chopra in his book called ‘Ageless body timeless mind’ tells us that every cell is constantly listening to our thoughts and adjusting accordingly, good or bad. If we begin to utilise the interaction between the conscious mind and the subconscious mind we begin to influence the corresponding nerves that nit our whole system together.

Judge Troward talks through the very beautiful method in which this interaction is effected. He states:

“The cerebro-spinal system is the organ of the conscious mind and the sympathetic system is the organ of the subconscious. The cerebro-spinal is the channel through which we receive conscious perception from the physical senses and exercise control over the movements of the body. This system of nerves has its centre in the brain.

The Sympathetic System has its centre in a ganglionic mass at the back of the stomach known as the Solar Plexus, and is the channel of that mental action which unconsciously supports the vital functions of the body.

The connection between the two systems is made by the vagus nerve which passes out of the cerebral region as a portion of the voluntary system to the thorax, sending out branches to the heart and lungs, and finally passing through the diaphragm, it loses its outer coating and becomes identified with the nerves of the Sympathetic System, so forming a connecting link between the two and making man physically a "single entity".’

The superb structure that is the human body is effected by our every thought and subsequent action. So if we can begin to harness our state and change our responses then every part of us changes for the better not just the initial thought.
