Manga- a cautionary tale
59Awwwwkkkk!
Beware of YouTube downloads
I have spent the weekend exploring manga and graphic novels and it has been an adventure I have shared with many of you. But I did want to share what I found to be the dark side of this culture- and it is an entire culture that will take you places you have not been.
Still, I have never had my computer attacked immediately upon opening a YouTube file.
Sunday I was perusing the selection of videos offered under the category manga 2009 most recent selections. I clicked on one of them and zap! My Norton anti-virus went nuts and I had to spend a good deal of time ridding my computer of a virus that had attached to four location. Those red flashing lights on yellow background was like an emergency road sign warning "Danger! Danger! Danger!"
Of course I did not download any more YouTube files from similar sites. I set up a new rule for myself. I will not download something that is brand new and I will not download something without a significant track record or that is from a familiar source I know I can trust. I didn't get into manga or any other exploration to mess up my life.
This reminds me of that old climbing rule, always have three stable attachments and one moving part. IN other words, haha, make sure three of your appendages are solidly connected to whatever you are climbing before you release the fourth and move it in an upward or downward or sideways direction. In other other words, keep safe. It's generally a long fall.
Know what it is you are looking at
Manga has all sorts of audiences. There is manga for elementary girls and elementary boys. There is manga for teen-aged girls and teen-aged boys. There is manga for young horny males and females and manga for alternative lifestyles like Boy Love. There is manga for women and manga for men. There is a lot of pornographic manga.
You don't want to get something that will offend you or pervert your child. It's not all good.
I would tend to trust titles in a local library.
As an aside, I went to my local library yesterday with the intention of checking out manga and classic graphic novels. I stood before row after row of manga and a tight fist seemed to twist my stomach. I had no idea what to do. I couldn't find the graphic novels and book after book of manga listed titles of which I was clueless.
Fortunately in the thick of my dismay, an old friend of my kids came up and knew all about everything manga. He is in his early twenties and he guided me through the shelves. Of course manga books read right to left but the shelves go left to right so that is a bit confusing.
Just so you know, the graphic classics tend to be taller books and much less interesting looking than the manga from Japan, haha. If you want to have an interesting afternoon, go peruse the manga shelves. And strike up a conversation with the kids that stand beside you. You will be amazed.
Thanks HuckR!

Well most of that doesnt happen if you become SO specific cause the more views hopefully the more safer cause they do put nothing on that bottom bar that helps you give sugestions.
I did not know that tose viruses do that i hope it doesnt happen again, but usually people spam and thats probably what happens.
Then again, im not actually sure about some of that stuff...

Storyteller, you are a fascinating person with fascinating interests. I saw an interesting Manga video on YouTube - a compilation of different videos over a very modern version of the Bumble Bee Tuna theme song. Careful, that song will run in your head all day! I would rate it PG-13
Hey uzamaki, i'm back from my daughter's graduation. glad to see you are still here! i guess i am just saying know what you are opening! viruses are not fun.
Tom, you are so funny. i opened the Bumble Bee Tuna theme song video- it was very fun. Are you into manga or do you also have eclectic taste? I would guess the latter. I think your opening sentence is probably the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me. Thank you so much. Have a great weekend.
adam, I need to check out your hubs and see if you actually did write this one. I returned from my daughter's graduation with hundreds of emails so I haven't had a chance to check out the hubs as yet. Thanks for your comments. I enjoy diving into adventures via information expansion, haha.
Tom you became so prolific I ran out of time to read all of your work. You completely blew me away with the Hub above. I need a glass of water, lol. Thank you so much.
If you are looking to read manga online I suggest checking out OneManga.com. They pretty much have everything you could want, but you also kind of have to know what you are looking for. Also speaking of the "dark side" of manga, I worked for a couple years at Border's Books and was assigned to the manga section, and spent a fair share of my time steering clueless parents away from ultra violent or sexual titles.
Thanks for the great suggestions, HuckR. I will link this hub with OneManga.com. Funny about your Boarders experience. I, too, was clueless until I did a little research. Comics... innocence... we ancient Americans think they are all Bugs Bunny and Marvel Heroes.
Yes its nice to have a youtube to be uploader and downloader of your videos or photos..but in some other way that site can also affect the personal emotion specially if the victim or a person has a scandal or what so ever..this is my own opinion...but this site is very informative....nice hubs..
Hammerj, yes, I suppose some of it is scandal related, I'm am no expert. I guess we have to monitor our own choices when it comes to YouTube and other online sites!

Thank you for the heads up on the Manga videos. I am impressed that you become interested in a subject and then throw yourself into it to find out what you may be missing or lucky to avoid. I tried to write a little about why I write about comic books. I think I will write next about why I write in prose instead of trying to get into the field. Thanks again!
