The Manila Ocean Park

Manila Ocean Park to open to public on 15 December

By Channel NewsAsia's Philippine Correspondent Christine Ong | Posted: 09 November 2007 1942 hrs

MANILA: The Philippines has the richest concentration of marine life in the world and its diverse marine species will soon be showcased in the country's first and largest oceanarium.

The Philippines' first marine theme park complex - Manila Ocean Park - will be opening its doors to the public on 15 December.

The US$20 million project features an oceanarium, a shopping mall, restaurants and a boutique hotel, funded by investors from Singapore and Malaysia.

Lim Chee Yong, President of Manila Ocean Park, said: "The Philippines has one of the most diverse marine bio diversity in the region, yet it doesn't have the proper facility to showcase its beautiful marine fauna and flora, so I thought it is very timely and very appropriate to have this facility here."

The oceanarium at Manila Ocean Park will be one of the biggest and most advanced in Asia.

As of now, Manila Ocean Park is 80 percent complete, and one of the main attractions is a 25-metre-long walkway tunnel, which will have the coral wall on one side, and big fish like sharks and rays on the other.

Aside from the 8,000-sqm oceanarium, the park will have several open-water habitats where marine enthusiasts can swim and dive with the fish.

Close to 300 marine species indigenous to the Philippines and Southeast Asia will be showcased.

Cristina Romualdez, Vice-President of Manila Ocean Park, said: "The sheer number and variety of species is our biggest attraction, and this will set us apart from other oceanariums all over the world."

The park owners hope visitors will not just marvel at the marine life, but also find it an enriching, educational experience.

"They will be able to learn about these creatures and they will be able to contribute in some way to the preservation and conservation of these particular creatures. We are largely an educational facility, and that's what we want to be known in this country," said Romualdez.

That is why entrance fees have been made affordable - US$4 for students and US$8 for other visitors.

Imagine going to Manila Bay and coming face-to-face with a shark or even a school of fierce barracudas.

Come December, this awesome scene will be experienced by Filipino adults and children alike with the completion of the Manila Ocean Park just behind the Quirino Grandstand at the Rizal Park.

The P1-billion project of Singaporean and Malaysian investors is the first world-class marine park to adopt a "fusion concept," according to Manila Ocean Park president Lim Chee Yong.

Lim said the concept entailed bringing together an oceanarium, a mall, a boutique hotel, a restaurant row and open marine habitats -- where marine enthusiasts could learn to swim and dive with the fishes.

"The park will house the first and largest aquarium facility in the Philippines," Lim announced during a walking tour with the media on Wednesday at the site.

He said that both the oceanarium and the open marine habitats would contain 12,000 cubic meters of seawater featuring 300 marine species indigenous to the Philippines and Southeast Asia.

Lim proudly said that the Manila Ocean Park would be among the most advanced ocean parks in Asia -- with an area larger than the famous Sentosa oceanarium in Singapore.

Wow! That's my Philippines! I went to Sentosa in Singapore just to see among others, the Underwater World and the Dolphin Lagoon. Now I don't have to go back just for the same reason. I'm sure tourism will greatly improved.

decrescendo, there are fast foods nearby and inside where you can still view the aquarium. But if you want good restaurants and bars.... Malate is very near the place and lots of Manila Bay viewing food hubs. :)

W've been there last easter sunday together with my family. We really enjoyed a lot seeing those species under water. My daughter loved it much. Especially when she saw big stingrays, sharks and a giant lapu-lapu and more. Thank you so much. We dont need to go to other country to see an oceanarium like this.

hello! ii am currently working at a center for kids called remar and i am so interested to bring my kids (center's kids to be precise) on that fabulous ocean park they were talking about. but the problem is we are a non profit center and we are just living through donations? does the management give charitable discount for this kind of institution? hope you will help me on these and i hope i have passed a great burden to you and eventually be our partner in helping these neglected children feel that they are welcome in these society. hope to hear from you...
