Manila,Pearl of the Orient
Manila, during the Spanish colonization was quite literally beautiful and magnificent. This picture shows strong european influence on its buildings and architecture. The city was cleaner as well, probably because there were few people then.300 years it was, under the Castillan dominance. But we all know the story already. The spaniards didn't really give respect to the natives,(some of them probably did),hence the Philippine revolution for Independence finished them off.Oh dear,if only they listened to the Ilustrados that time namely Rizal,Jaena,Del Pilar etc.The natives only wanted fair representation for the counrty.Yet instead of listening, they ordered the killing of Rizal.(Imagine,Rizal didn't even uttered a single bad word against Mother Spain).I would probably be conversing here in spanish not in english.Anyways,Manila now is just a shadow of its old self. She wasn't able to recover from the ravages of WWII.It's still surviving though, trying it's darn best to capture her past glory. As long as there are Manilenyo's who are aware about her grand history, and is willing to do something about it ,there is hope.
