Terrific Hounds: the English Foxhound

The English foxhound is a noble pack-hunting dog that has been present and active for several centuries. The English foxhound was bred from a combination of the Greyhound, the Bulldog, and the Fox Terrier. From these three breeds, characteristics such as exceptional speed, strength and authority, and a passion for the hunt have been respectively inherited. They possess many talents, which include: hunting and tracking, exceptional watchdog duty, and a strong build and energy that work perfectly for agility training.

The English foxhound is an energetic breed that loves to run and play. They are responsive and obedient to their master, because they are responsible and love to please.  They are strong, in addition to possessing a sturdy build that suits them well for hunting and chasing. The English foxhound tends to run at consistent speeds, and they have the ability to pace themselves so they can run for literally hours on end. Because they love being outside, they are not recommended for apartment living. If they live at a large home with fenced in acreage, then it is a perfect fit for them! If acreage is not a possibility, they need to be taken on long, brisk walks each day; if this is the case, then living in a neighborhood home will be sufficient for their activity level and happiness.

Elegant Strength & Calm Authority

This particular breed exudes elegant strength and calm authority. They possess an exceptionally strong build, with straight legs and a tail that is alert and raised. They sport pendulum ears that give them a gentle, yet curious expression. Their coat is short, slightly rough, but very easy to care for (with the average amount of shedding). Their coloring is either tri-color (that is, white, black, and tan) or two-tone (primarily white with either black or tan coloring); however, the coloring is not especially important for this breed. Male English foxhounds are usually 22 to 25 inches in height, while females are 21 to 24 inches in height. English foxhounds also weigh approximately 65-70 lbs, primarily due to their muscular build than size.

As far as health goes, the English foxhounds tend to be exceptionally healthy their entire lives. The best thing to do is simply make sure they have good dental health, they are properly vaccinated, they are regularly medicated against fleas and ticks, they have their heartworm prevention treatment regularly, and that they stay active and get the ample exercise they need. English foxhounds also have a life expectancy of around or slightly less than 10 years.

This breed is elegant yet active, and they were specifically built for the hunt. They have a keen sense of smell, and they are fast runners with incredible stamina. They inherited a love of running and speed the Greyhound; they have received their tough demeanor and authority from the Bulldog, and they have an innate love of hunting and tacking from the Fox Terrier. These does are energetic and fun loving, in addition to their timeless beautiful and elegant appearance.
