For many people, a huge part of the overall cruise experience is not only enjoying the activities that are scheduled on the cruise ship but also partaking in onshore activities. Depending on the region, the onshore activities may vary but range from snorkeling though coral reefs to mountain hiking to shopping at local outdoor markets.

Every cruise line offers organized shore excursions that passengers can take advantage of for an additional fee. These activities are scheduled to enhance each port visit while attempting to increase the overall profits for the cruise line. These land-based trips can vary from sightseeing tours to cultural events. For example, you can take enjoy a tour of the local village or participate in wine tasting throughout various wine shops.

Depending on what is available in each destination, shore excursions tend to cover all levels of activity and interest. An active shore trip could include water sports, hiking and biking activities whereas an activity-based trip may feature a day at the spa or beach, wine or food tasting, a pleasure cruise on a sailboat or a visit to a local museum. Sightseeing trips typically consist of a scheduled bus tour that takes passengers to shopping areas and highlight areas of the port city or nearby destinations.

Keep in mind that in different parts of the world, excursions will look different. For instance, in the Caribbean, you will find options that you can take advantage of such as snorkeling or swimming with dolphins; A European tour may focus more on sightseeing options such as multi-hour lunches that feature local produce, meats and wine at a farmhouse in Tuscany. So, if you are a wine lover, this may be the perfect option for you!

The length of time that it takes to complete shore excursions will vary depending on what the scheduled activity is. Some of the excursions may take all your time in port, while others may just be a few hours. If you are interested in seeing sites outside of the port city, they you should choose a full-day tour to see the most you can in one trip. For a more specific schedule, a half-day tour is a great way to focus on one activity such as a three-hour canoe trip or viewing the highlights of a city.

If you like more freedom while you are on a shore excursion, then you may be likely to choose a tour that does not involve busloads of tourists following flag-waving guides. Many people enjoy being able to explore on their own free will until it is time to meet to go back to the cruise ship. If you like some type of guidance, you can always opt to take a guided tour that also incorporates an hour or two of free time to take advantage of.

As you can see, there are many different types of ship-to-shore excursions that are available for passengers to take advantage of. Choose the activity that best suits your personal tastes and make sure you enjoy yourself and have fun!

Great hub. Personally, I find that most excursions are overpriced and not worth the money.
