Marantz PMD660 Compact Flash Recorder Review

For around $60 more than the price for an R-1, Marantz currently offers the PMD660, which is around the same size and relies on four AA batteries for power. It offers the options of 16-bit 44.1kHz, 48kHz WAV recording, or MP3 recording, in combo with the two XLR inputs on the one side of the case. The PMD660 is a bit bigger than the Edirol R-1 and weighs some more too, but it is still a handheld size unit. If the XLR connections aren't a problem, I'd stick with the Edirol R-1 at a lower price and lighter overall weight. If you really need something with even more connection choices and some over the shoulder portability is good enough for you, there is the Marantz PMD670, something that records to Compact Flash units and offers you RCA connectors along with to mini-plug and XLR options.

The Marantz PMD 670 is quite bigger and costs a bit more, and while it offers some more recording choices, such as recording to a MP2, and a limiter, the 660 does most if not all of what its big brother 660 does, and offers a simpler, less confusing interface and an easy form. Edirol R1 is some smaller and less expensive, but does not offer XLR mic inputs or phantom power, thus not worth the inexpensive price. The Fostex FR2 is around twice as expensive and is much heavier than all the ones before. Sound Devices 722 is outrageously expensive, however it offers a large devoted hard drive and superb input sonics. Any of these recorders might do well, and suit some person's specific needs / desires, but the PMD 660 is definitely a well-defined unit, particularly for news-type activities.
