Mark Sanford's Affair News Conference
For all who witnessed the Mark Sanford affair news conference this afternoon, it was quite possibly one of the worst five of all time. The Governor of South Carolina was all answers. He spilled the beans, and then he just kept spilling them.
The Governor's performance must have had the GOP groaning and Barack Obama and his Democrat cohorts secretly jumping for joy. It was certainly a marked difference from the way the President keeps himself composed at (almost) all times when in front of the cameras. Who ever thought this guy could do what it takes to run for the highest office in the land?
Sanford took a full seven minutes talking about his love of hiking and the Appalachian Trail before he began to apologize to everyone from his staff to his wife to his sons. It was truly stunning. I'm sitting there thinking, "What the... Is he holding this press conference and going on like this just to apologize for not letting people know where he was." It seemed pretty bizarre. That would be the sort of apology you just made to the people immediately involved. And it seemed so heavy, with the Governor even starting to tear up twice.
And then he said, "Let's just get to the bottom line. I've been unfaithful to my wife, Jenny."
I predicted the Governor's affair:
- Is South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford Having an Affair?
I find several of the tidbits of recent news about South Carolina Governor, Mark Sanford, to be utterly strange. In fact, I can't help but speculate that he's having an affair. Here are some of the facts... - Is Governor Mark Sanford Gay?
Sadly, when you create a veil of lies, sometimes people go overboard in overcompensating in the other direction to try to figure out the truth. "Conspiracy" theories have already started popping up on the...
Sanford Gives Too Much Detail in News Conference
But what was even more bizarre was when Mark Sanford went on and on giving way too much detail about his affair. He let us know that his cheating started out as "a very dear friendship". And only later did it develop "into something much, much more." Oh, I'm sure your wife is going to love that one, buddy. Why don't you tell us some more about how much this Argentina girl means to you. Tell the world. Don't hide your love under a bushel.
This Mark Sanford affair is going to go down in history, as will the news conference, for its wackiness. It sounds like they may have made contact through an online dating site. That's not really clear. THat's just my best guess at this point. (Although I'm still not sold on the fact that it was a woman; this guy may be gay folks. Stay tuned.)
