Business marketing is a very important aspect of having a successful business and there are many different approaches that can be taken to marketing to help your business improve and increase sales. Many would agree that specific marketing strategies are based largely on the opinions of the individuals who have watched the market and who have come up with ideas on how to best sell their product. Therefore there is no one right marketing strategy. Here is some information that will help you to understand more about different marketing strategies and what you can do to make one work for you and your business.

The marketing strategy that you use for your business is very important and could even be the single biggest factor in the success or failure of your business. Whether you are helping your kids sell lemonade on the corner of the street or you are marketing a highly sophisticated technical gadget, you will still need to implement a marketing strategy. When you get your marketing strategy right, you can have a very successful business and if your plan is flawed or you don't have a plan at all then you could severely damage your chances of success. No matter what type of business you are starting, the same basic principles apply and you need to know what you are going to do to make it work. Many people confuse business marketing with simple advertising and marketing is much broader than just advertising.

A marketing strategy is basically the process that allows an organization to concentrate the resources it has on the opportunities that will provide them the greatest benefit and the greatest return on their investment. A marketing strategy should allow a company to increase sales and to achieve sustainable growth through implementing the plan. Any marketing strategy should be centered on the principles and goals that are the most important to the company and their mission. A marketing strategy is the most effective when it is an integral part of the company structure and the overall corporate strategy. It needs to define how the organization will gain and keep customers, how it will find and exploit prospect and manage competitors. The customer is the central part of the company's success and should therefore be the central aspect of the marketing strategy as well. All companies should have a mission statement that talks about what is the most important to them and will also allow them to define themselves. A marketing strategy can be the central point of a marketing plan which contains the specific actions that will help the company successfully implement their marketing strategy. A mission statement should normally be short and concise to help give a very broad view of what is the most important to the company. The strategy should be a well thought out series of tactics and actions to be taken. A marketing strategy often integrates the marketing goals, policies, and action steps of a company into a more cohesive whole that can then be viewed all at once to give a better understanding of what the company wants. The marketing strategy will normally include such things as advertising, channel marketing, internet marketing, promotion, public relations and many other things. Many companies try to make their marketing strategy an integral part of the business and something that everyone in the organization is aware of or at least can find out about. Each level and team in the company is supposed to make goals and take action on them based on the overall company strategy and goals and also on the mission statement.

There are many different types of marketing strategies and a company can use one or many at one time or simply adapt their plan to be similar to one of the methods described below. Market dominance strategies define a company by the amount of market share they have or are trying to achieve. A market leader strategy will focus on becoming the foremost business in the market or industry and their efforts will all be aimed at achieving this. Challenger and Follower strategies are also other ones in the market dominance group. A Porter generic strategy is one that refers to the market penetration of a company. Innovation strategies deal with the rate of new product development and the rate at which they output new things. A company can aim to be a pioneer, a close follower or a late follower. The objective of the company can differ depending on what part of the product lifecycle they want to tap into the most and where they believe the most profit or benefit for their company will be. Growth strategies ask the question of how a business can grow and develop. The most common ways that are taken and implemented are horizontal integration, vertical integration, diversification, or intensification. These are only general strategies and many people have adaptations of each of these. Of course the implementation will be different for each company and what is most important to them.

No matter what type of marketing strategy will be implemented, it is very important to do proper market and marketing research beforehand so as to take the most advantage of the opportunities that present themselves. Marketing research can take place in many different ways and can be taken from either primary or secondary research. Primary research is done by the company or someone they commission to do it for them to solve and address a specific problem or challenge that they encounter. Secondary research is the use of research that has already been done by someone else for another reason but may sill have relevance to the question at hand. Many companies choose to use a combination of both primary and secondary research to make the most of their research budget. Secondary research is generally less expensive to acquire, but is also less relevant but can help more closely identify the problem and what approach should be taken to get to the desired result. Marketing plans are an essential part of any marketing strategy and allow the company to define the steps that they need to take to get there from setting goals and defining what the company wants to do to the actual implementation of the ideas to improve the business.

Some other examples of marketing strategies include traditional marketing, network marketing and event marketing. Traditional marketing makes use of the idea of a business plan and a marketing plan to help define a target group for the particular product or service that is desired. Traditional marketing is the method that is used by most companies all over the world and has proven itself to be very effective and a worthwhile endeavor for most companies. Network marketing makes the use of individual motivations the relationships these people have to market a product that is usually sold through direct selling. Companies that make use of network marketing strategies are also known as MLM or multilevel marketing firms. They have a bad reputation in some places because it can be difficult to tell the difference between legal and legitimate MLMs and illegal and illegitimate pyramid schemes. Many people are attracted by the idea of being their own boss and being an independent business "owner" who makes their own decisions and decides how much they are really going to make. Event marketing is another approach that is becoming very popular recently. This involves the use of different public events that a person may or may not pay to attend where they can distribute or learn more about a business and the products that a company or many companies offer. The most common forms of event marketing are trade shows, seminars, and workshops. Each of these venues should be considered differently and can each benefit a company in different ways. Event marketing is a very effective way for businesses to get their name out into the public eye to that they products and services they offer can be more commonly known by people in the community. Event marketing can take place on a local scale or a global scale depending on what the goals of the company are. No matter what the objectives of the company are, care should be taken to take the approach that will provide the most benefit to the bottom line of the company.

When you are planning on starting a business or taking the one you have to the next level, you need to carefully consider all of your options. Research should be done on any method you plan on implementing and you should always follow your gut and your instinct when you are deciding what you will do. The bottom line is always the most important consideration and should always be at the front of your mind when you are thinking about what market strategy to use. Always trust your instincts and try to never do something just because it is the most popular thing to do or is the newest strategy.

I have always been a fan of creating a comprehensive "marketing strategy" over the popular "spray and pray" method where you try every marketing strategy that comes down the pike and hope like hell that one eventually sticks.

You're so right - research is an ESSENTIAL part of any marketing plan's success.
