A Classic Jet Li Movie

The Legend is one of the best Corey Yuen directed films.  This 1993 release starred Jet Li, Michelle Reis and Lung Chan.  During this movie you will find a love story wrapped in the middle of a power struggle story.  The father of the girl that Jet Li’s character, Fong Sai Yuk, falls in love with is a power hungry merchant and in order to gain more power he wants to marry off his beloved daughter to the winner of a kung-fu contest.  While that story is going there is another story that has to do with the secret Red Lotus Flower Society is determined to over throw the evil Manchu emperor and his parliament.

One of the governors is sent to find a list of the secret society. Along the way he endures trials and tribulations trying to figure out just who this secret society is. With a bevy of martial arts scenes throughout this movie, you simply can’t go wrong with watching this one. Jet Li puts on a command performance in what has to be one of his best roles. During this movie there is an obvious gender role reversal. Where you think the woman would be the weak one emotionally in the film, it is the male counterpart in this movie.

If you have yet to see this story within a story type movie, then it is a must see for you. There were no slow spots to where you would get bored with it. Towards the end of the film both stories collide and come to a head for an ending you simply will not believe in this two story movie. It is a cross between action and drama and you will be captivated by both, the love story and action parts of this film.
