There are many things that help children learn beyond what they get from their classes at school. Many experts claim that having a child in a music program substantially helps them with things like math and science in school. There are many benefits to things like art and physical education as well. Parents can do things outside the school that can have some great benefits as well. Dance is great for kids, and enrolling in martial arts training is also a great idea for most.

Martial arts training can include any of the many disciplines that are out there. Karate is one of the most common, and one of the most popular, but there are many more from which to choose. Children often think of karate first as it is the one that most talk about most frequently, but they may end up liking something else much more. Training for martial arts is found in almost any community, even when all that is offered is karate.

There is the obvious physical benefit to going through martial arts training. Physical education is great in school, but children do need more motion and exercise than what they get during school hours. With a nation that seems obsessed with food and obesity, parents can do things to help their children remain healthy and to instill habits that will keep them that way for life. Martial arts training is definitely good for that purpose. They will get aerobic exercise as well as toning for most major muscle groups.

Beyond the physical aspects of martial arts training, there is the mental side of the equation. Like dance, going through training for martial arts will bring about discipline, responsibility, and dedication. Those things are great tools for anyone going through life. Self discipline is one thing that is especially tough for children to master, so going through martial arts training can give them a head start with that. Best of all, martial arts are generally safe for children, and that means you can rest easy while they are practicing, as long as they are with competent instructors.

When searching for a good school for training of martial arts, you should have no trouble figuring out which are the good ones. You can ask other parents, or you can even ask the school if they have any recommendations. You can tell a lot for the look of each place, and you can also do research on any school or program by putting their business name in a search.

Other great information on training in the martial arts.

I think there is so much to gain from children taking martial arts. Self-Confidence is on thing I gained from it as a youngster. You also learn self-control when learning techniques with other students. The physical fitness aspect is so important especially these days where fast food ads are probably in their school text books!

Nice Article.

Thank Jeff!

Yes my son who is 4 (started at 3) is in Taekwondo and currently a camo belt. He has learned a great deal not to mention I feel a great deal of pride and being proud when we workout together.. One thing not mentioned much with kids in the martial arts is Leadership. My son at 4 is learning a great deal on how to be a leader even when other kids are being squirrely.. I believe martial arts for kids is unmatched in the amount it can teach kids. If you feel something else gives as much please comment!

Thanks,

thacker

Hi thacker,

I also have a 4 year old son (and a 2 year old girl). None of them are in martial arts yet but the fact that you're son has already been in Taekwondo for a year is quite encouraging. I have fun with my kids having them do Muay Thai style kicks against a pillow yelling "Heeeyyy!" like the do in Thai boxing matches LOL.
