Even within each system there are various options that are best suited either for Self Defense, Competition or Traditional aspects Martial arts. In Calgary you have all of these options. One system cannot satisfy each of these areas, they have to specialise in a particular field.
Now regardless of whether a system is intended for competition, for Self Defense or for traditional aspects they are still excellent, I just want you to realise that there is a difference and a single system cannot be everything to all people.
There are very good reasons why you would want to find an art that specialises in your field of interest. Lets take Self Defense for example because a very large percentage of people start with this in mind. In Self Defense, all of your techniques have to be very simple because in a high stress situation most people are simple not capable of carrying out complex movements.
Some of the competition styles teach techniques that are too complex or just not practical for Self Defense.
The traditional styles of are very good if you understand that is what they are. The techniques are taught in a way that they were originally taught hundreds of years ago. Some of the techniques are again not practical for modern self defense.
Make a list of some of those clubs in your area, decide what your reason is for wanting to start. Go to the clubs during a training session and watch for yourself. Speak to the instructor and ask him what the system is intended for. You should also be able to join in for a few sessions to see if it is exactly what you are looking for too.
