Weymouth Landing Village Center Commerical District

The major highway through Weymouth cuts the Weymouth Landing Village Center in two with Washington Street or Highway 53/18. This is a high-traffic transportation artery that brings new businesses, customers, and residents into the commercial area/mallway.

One of the nationally important historic landmarks in this area is the Weymouth Landing Post Office, built prior to American entrance into WWII in 1941 as the city's first Federal Building. It features a mural by artist Guy Pene du Bois, showing the initial landing of the first white settlers on Weymouth's shores in 1622, related to Plymouth Colony.

Front Street is another important roadway in the Weymouth Landing area as well, supporting seven historic homes under city preservation programming. The Whittemore House is touted as the oldest, from pre-Civil War days, about 1830. Tufts University Library is also located in the Weymouth Landing area. Period-era shops from Revolutionary and Civil War eras and other retail establishes thrive in this commerical district.

Other village centers include Bricknell Square, Columbian Square, and Jackson Square, the largest of the four centers. Columbian and Jackson commercial districts contain the highest numbers of historically recognized buildings and installations, preserved by city programs.

Among the four commercial districts and villages of Weymouth, jobs are increasing gradually as ongoing city development comes to fruition. The Travel and Tourism industry draws visitors interested in history and Early American life as well as to theaters, other entertainment, and shopping.
