What is a Personnel Policy?

The origin of today’s employment laws are based on the old English *Master and Servant* relationship from ‘ye days of olde’. Do you know about the Personnel policy?

The pride in our education and abilities along with capturing that prestigious job at that corporate office can give anyone a delightful sense of accomplishment. Achieving steady employment ensures a sense of financial security and ability to contribute to society both personally and professionally and earn respect from our fellow peers.

A business that hires a employee will and/or may, provide a Personnel policy which will state their attitude and adopt policies that outline the treatment of their employees. Many businesses can no longer decide for themselves, on the contents of their Personnel policy. Today there are labor unions that make demands and also directives from government legislation. Have you taken a look at your available government resources?

Laws exist at the federal, provincial/state level that will provide governing guidelines for both the unionized and non-unionized employee. Rules have been established regarding the creation and termination of the employer and employee relationship. These laws may differ in international countries and may not even exist!

A good business manager will believe that their responsibilities to their employees extends to beyond just providing a excellent rate of pay and safe work environment. Others may also feel forced by unions or legislation, to provide additional benefits such as the following ;

Paid public holidays and vacations
Unemployment insurance contributions
Workers Compensation
Group health and life insurance plans
Retirement pension plan contributions
Discounts or subsidized rates

The personnel policy will outline what benefits are available to the employee by the employer and follow closely with current employment and labor law practices and should be updated with any additions and/or deletions. Do you have your own personal copy?

The importance of having a personal copy of the personnel policy cannot be stressed enough times. It is a important and living document, to have at hand in the event of illegal actions on the part of the employer and court action may be necessary. It provides the guidelines for protection, rights and responsibilities between employer and employee.

A good personnel policy should include at least the following basic information in these areas ;

Pay and fringe benefits
Job security
Job advancement opportunities
Fair treatment in disputes and work allocation
Grounds for termination
Respect between employees and supervisors
Company information

A new employee must also recognize they have obligations and duties to their employer and these may include the following ;

Obeying laws
Exercising common sense
Exercising good faith and respect
Avoid and declare conflicts of interest
Report and account for financial matters
Maintain confidentiality

The employer will have his own set of duties and obligations to fulfill which may include ;

Strictly follow terms of contract between employer, employee, union and government
– Provide a safe work environment
– Provide competent supervisor or fellow employee when safety depends on them
– Honour liabilities the employee has incurred during work employment
– Reimburse the employee for expenses incurred during employment
– Establish rules and orders for work to be done
– Permit a employee to hold a 2nd job outside of the office at own spare time
– Provide and maintain opportunities to prevent loss of employee skills

The employer and employee relationship can be a rewarding experience as long as both parties follow the Personnel policy. It’s their guide and map to ensuring business operations run smoothly and profitably. Read related —> here and there.
