The Mastiff is a large breed of dog that is surprisingly good-natured, easy going, gentle, and calm. Mastiffs are well-mannered animals that usually make a nice fit with every type of home. Mastiffs require abundant space to move in and would not be suited for living in a small apartment.

Because Mastiffs are known to be totally devoted and loyal to their owners, and due to the fact that the breed is great with small children, Mastiffs make excellent pets for a close family.

Indeed, Mastiffs have affection levels that are very high, and the breed has no problem sharing a home with other pets. Add strength and quickness to the Mastiff’s loyalty to the family, and it is no surprise that Mastiffs are superb watchdogs.

Upkeep And Maintenance

When they reach adulthood, Mastiffs need some daily exercise. How much exercise is enough? A brisk walk that lasts 10 to 15 minutes is adequate, but physical games in a yard that is fenced-in are better.

The breed is suited to both indoor and outdoor living; however, if you decide to keep your Mastiff outside, please understand that the breed does not like hot weather. Mastiffs delight in temperatures that are cool, so be certain to provide abundant shade for your Mastiff if he or she is kept outside during the hot and humid months. With all of this in mind, a Mastiff—like most dogs—prefers to spend his or her time indoors in stable temperatures loving and protecting the family.

Health Information

Regarding the health of Mastiffs, the main concerns relate to weight: Mastiffs are susceptible to becoming obese or overweight. Monitoring your Mastiff’s food consumption is therefore extremely important. Other serious health concerns include gastric torsion and CHD. It is suggested by veterinarians that the breed should be tested for elbow dyplasia, hip dysplasia, eye problems, and thyroid. Minor health concerns for the breed include cystinuria, osteosarcoma, and elbow dysplasia. The average lifespan of a Mastiff who remains active and healthy during its lifetime is between 9 and 11 years.
