According to a recent article in New York Times on preventing back pain problems "Your spine should look the same when you're lying down as it does when you're standing up." In other words when you are lying on your side, your shoulders and hips should sink into to the mattress, while your waist is supported.

Keep in mind that mattresses that are to firm – the ones made of foam, spring or air chambers may not allow enough give for that to happen. What usually happens is that hard mattresses may tax back and neck muscles which will have to work harder to keep your spine straight.

On the other side mattresses that are too soft could also cause spinal alignment problems because the muscles work to compensate for the lack of support.

“So what’s the best mattress for me?” you might be wondering. As always, the truth is somewhere in the middle. Neither the hardest nor the softest mattresses are good for you so stay away from them. The truth is that you have to visit your local mattress shop and see what they have to offer in order to make up your mind.

When you have settled on a brand and model go online and order it because the prices online are always lower. Not only that, but the mattress will be delivered to your home instead of you carrying it from the store.

With these facts in mind let’s see what mattresses are available in the market and evaluate their pros and cons.

Three- fourths of people that buy mattress still go with a traditional innerspring mattress set. However a name that keeps coming out is the one of Tempur- Pedic mattresses. It is made of viscoelastic which is the scientific name for the memory foam.

It is somehow expensive but people who own it say that it is well worth the money. But it is not regular people only who rave about the mattresses. Professionals also say that memory foam mattresses are a perfect solution for those with back pain or osteoarthritis. Originally the technology was developed by NASA for use in astronauts’ seats to help absorb G-forces but later was licensed for commercial use.

However along with the positive reviews there are also negative ones that we need to take in consideration when deciding on buying this particular type of foam mattress.

One of the issues that pops up repeatedly is that Tempur Pedic mattresses takes some getting used to. This is in part because of the fact that they are not as squishy as an innerspring mattress with fluffy quilted ticking.

Another complaint by people who own Tempur Medic is that is that in cold weather the mattress feels hard. Also some owners say that their new mattresses have a strange chemical smell. According to the company that sells them the odor is a result of the unique manufacturing process. The smell goes away in a few days but some people find it noxious.

Also people say that because the foam comforts to your body you can feel like you are being “swallowed” by the mattress. As a result it is hard to move and changing positions becomes challenging

As I mentioned earlier Tempur Medic is very expensive mattress. As a matter of fact it cost twice as much as a high-quality innerspring mattress test.

Other mattress manufacturers have been taking advantage of that fact for a while now. They have been manufacturing foam mattresses that cost less to compete with Tempur Pedic. A few names to consider are Isoform, Sealy and Serta. The Isoform Classic foam mattresses compare to Tempur –Pedic in quality but sell for a fraction of the price.

So from what have been said so far it looks that choosing a mattress these days is not an easy task. People have to choose between the traditional innerspring mattresses and the newer ones – foam mattresses (Tempur Pedic), air mattresses (the Sleep Number Bed) and latex mattresses (Royal Pedic).

Experts agree that each and every one of them has it own advantages and disadvantages. Since they all provide proper support you can’t go wrong with neither one of them. It this case it all comes down to how much you are willing to spend on a mattress.

As I said before – the only way to find out what the best mattress is for you is to test them – be it as a hotel, store or a friend’s house. Keep in mind that some retailers and manufacturers offer an in-home test. A word of caution though – most likely you will have to pay shipping charges both ways.
