Mauritius Tourism

Mauritius Tourism is a major factor in keeping the economy of this country as high as it is. Before people started visiting this beautiful part of the world they solely relied on agricultural businesses. However, along with tourism this country is now a major player in both financial and industrial markets as well.

In fact since the late 1960’s the country has seen a steady growth in its economy and this has made improvements to the lives of the people who live on the island. Along with many people living much longer the number of infant mortalities occurring each year has been greatly reduced as well.

Many tourists will spend several weeks on the island as the distance to travel from other parts of the world is extremely long. It is located off the southwest coast of Africa and located in the Indian Ocean. So the weather throughout the year is generally very good and it has some of the most beautiful and unspoilt beaches you are likely to find anywhere in the world today. Certainly this is the main reason why so many people visit this island today.

Mauritius is one of the islands which makes up the Mascarene Islands group and is known as the Republic of Mauritius. As well as this island there are also the islands of St Brandon, Rodrigues, the French Island of Reunion and the Islands of Agalega. However, it is Mauritius that most tourists tend to visit during their vacations to this part of the world.

Mauritius Currency

The main Mauritius currency is the Mauritian Rupee. Although previously the island has also had the Indian Rupee, the Mauritian Dollar and Mauritian Sterling as its main currencies as well. In fact the Mauritian Rupee was introduced to the island back in 1877.

The reason that the Rupee was chosen was because there had been a large influx of immigrants from India to the Island. It actually replaced all other coinage that had previously been available on the island and was equal to one Indian Rupee. Plus as well as being a currency on Mauritius this was also in circulation on the Seychelle Islands until 1914.

However it was not until the 1960’s that the island actually began to issue its own banknotes. Originally in 1967 the Bank of Mauritius only issued four types. There was the 50 Rupee, the 25 Rupee, the 10 Rupee and the 5 Rupee bank note. Then in 1985 the bank then provided a new set of banknotes and this included now the 1,000 Rupee banknote along with the 500, 200 and 100 Rupee banknotes also.

The rupee itself is worth 100 cents and certainly when exchanging your US dollars or UK Pounds for your vacation you will be handed some considerable sums of money. Currently the exchange rate of the Mauritian Rupee to the US Dollar is one rupee is worth 4 cents US. Whereas the exchange rate between the UK pound and the Mauritian Rupee is 1 rupee is worth 2 pence sterling.
