What is a maxi dress?

A maxi dress is a full length flowing dress.

Maxi dress made their debut in the year 1970. The vintage maxi dresses were made of polyester. Unfortunately, the trend died very soon. Maxis were out of fashion within a few months. Maxis came to the fore once again in the spring of 2007, it ruled the fashion world in 2008 and is going to be here in 2009 as well. In contrast to the polyester used in 1970s, today maxis are made with the jersey material.

There is so much variety in maxi dress that you can surely find one for yourself. Moreover, you can find maxi dresses for any occasion and every color. Maxi dresses are available in all the price brackets. If you are among those who believe in making a fashion statement with big brand name, then you can go in for designer maxi dresses in the price range of $300 to $500 and upwards. You can get maxis made in various fabrics. Maxis made of jersey material or soft cotton maxi dresses are quite popular and can be worn as casual wear or even as evening maxi dress in summer. There are silk maxi dresses or evening maxi dresses, which are available in high budget range. These come in printed variety as well as with embroidery, giving it a richer look.

You can even wear a maxi where the top and the bottom portion of the maxi is made using more than one fabric.

Designs of Maxis: Printed maxis are a rage today. Again, you can go for block prints, small prints, large prints etc. Large floral prints are considered as in thing.

Though maxis are for every one and every occasion, you need to be careful while choosing a maxi for you so that you can look your best in the outfit.

Celebrities who are taller and slim can carry any type of maxi well and will look good in a flowing maxi. For a woman of petite frame, long flowing maxis will shorten her frame further and make her look bulkier than she actually is.  A short woman should:

• Avoid wearing a flowing maxi. If you want to wear a flowing maxi, keep the flare minimum.
• The maxi should be reaching her ankles and should preferably cut in A line.
• See that the top portion is well fitted.
• Wear high heeled platform shoes with maxi, to give you height.
• Do not wear a long waist coat over maxi.
• If you have excess fat over tummy, use extra fabric in the front to hide the imperfections of your figure.
• If you have added ounces on your hips as well, do not wear maxis that are tight on the hips. A comfortably fitted maxi will look good.

Plus size maxi dress is a boon for women with a larger and bulkier frame. A flowing maxi will hide the extra fat on the thighs, hips and stomach and gives a feminine look.

• Do not wear fitted tops as it will make you look bustier.
• Try halter neck instead of going for spaghetti straps or strapless maxi dresses as it will show your bulkier frame.
• Opt for a V line maxi dress.
• Bold color and bigger prints look good on women with big built.
• This season’s color is lavender blues, lemon and green.
