Barking is instinctual to canines and therefore puts you in a difficult situation. Punishment is not an effective way of handling the situation because he isn’t barking just to misbehave.
Here are some stop dog barking tips.
What Type Of Barking Do You Want Stopped?
Choosing what barking behavior you would like eliminated is the first step. Getting your dog to stop barking completely is something that you don’t want to do. This would be next to impossible to do and it would just not be normal. The nuisance bark is the one to focus on. For example, if left in the yard during the evening does the barking go on “all night long”? Does a knock on the door set your dog off? That’s just a couple there are probably hundreds more.
Pick the times that the barking is the biggest nuisance and then try and curb that one.
What Is The Cause?
Normaly there is a cause as to why your dog is barking. When he hears someone outside the door, he is giving you a heads up.
The serenade outside your window at night could be caused by boredom or he is feeling lonely.
You will be much more equipped to fix the behavior if you can just figure out the why.
The answer could be as easy as just redirecting his focus. If, when someone comes to the door your dog starts barking, have him sit and stay.
Start Training
Get involved in some sort of dog training program. It is much easier to fix the bad habits of a pup that has some training.
