Mayfair in London is one of the most fascinating parts of the London borough of Westminster. Steeped in intriguing history, Mayfair has long been the playground of the rich and affluent. Property here costs an absolute fortune, but more residential properties are becoming available again are the area had a period of being mainly use by the commercial sector - converting townhouses into office spaces.

For shoppers, Mayfair remains a destination of choice. New Bond Street and Old Bond Street (just referred to as Bond Street for short) are home to very best designer names, selling exquisite items - often at eye watering prices. Mayfair is also home to two stunning shoppin arcades - the Royal Arcade, connecting Bond Street and Albemarle Street, and the Burlington Arcade which runs parallel to Old Bond Street, and connects Burlington Gardens with Picaddily.

Next to the Burlington Arcade is the Royal Academy of Art, where stunnin exhibitions can always be found.

Squares in Mayfair

There are several attractive squares in Mayfair - Hanover, Berkeley and Grosvenor (pronounced Grove-nor), home to the US Embassy and a state of Roosevelt.

Mayfair History

The name Mayfair comes from an annual "May Fair" that lasted for a fortnight. It was the scene of trading, entertainments and debauchery. It took place on the site which is now occupied by Shepherd Market. Thefair was banned and the area became gentrified, as land owners like the Grosvenor family moved in.

  • Bond Street - Home to top designer names and exclusive boutiques, as well as Smythson of Bond Street, holder of 3 Royal Warrants.
  • Savile Row - The ost famous name in bespoke tailoring.
  • Shopping Arcades - Royal Arcade and Burlington Arcade
