McDonald’s Strange Menu Around the World

McDonald's don't have the same menu worldwide, each country may or may not have all the items served in the US and some items are available only at selected countries. When you walk into a McDonald's in a foreign location expect exotic items which you may not have seen in your local McDonald's.

Here is a list of items you won't find in the US.

INDIA

In India, selling of beef is prohibited (Hindus revere cows) so you won't find Big Mac's instead you will find Maharaja Mac, which is similar to Big Mac but made of lamb or chicken meat. They also serve a vegetarian burger not found in the US called the McAloo Tikki burger.

NORWAY

In fish-loving Norway, you can find McLaks, a sandwich made of grilled salmon and Dill sauce.

GERMANY

In Germany, you get most of the items find in the US plus they serve German beer, so you can have a Big Mac plus a Pilsner beer.

CANADA

In parts of Canada, they have a lobster item called McLobster, a lobster roll, the same sold as McHomard in French spoken parts of Canada.

JAPAN

In Japan, McDonald's has added many items catered to the locals such as Ebi Filet-O (shrimp burger), Koroke Burger (mashed potato, cabbage and katsu sauce), Ebi-Chiki (shrimp nuggets) and a green tea flavored milkshake. Some of these sound healthy; McDonald's can have similar items here and worldwide.

CHILE

In Chile, burgers are served with avocado paste; no ketchup is used in the burgers.

COSTA RICA

In Costa Rica, McDonald's serve rice. They sell Gallo Pinto which means rice and beans in Spanish.

GREECE

In Greece, burgers are served in pita bread not in buns; they have a Greek Mac, a burger made of patties wrapped in pita bread.

HONG KONG

This is another location, where rice is served. Hong Kong citizens get Rice burgers in McDonald's where the burgers are served between two rice patties rather than on buns.

ISRAEL

McDonald's has 3 kosher restaurants where cheeseburger and dairy products are not served because Jewish Law forbids serving "the child [cow/beef] in its mother's milk [dairy]." They have McShawarma, meat in a pita bread roll.

URUGUAY

In Uruguay, McDonald's has McHuevo (Huevo is eggs in Spanish), a regular hamburger but topped with a poached egg.

Some of the above items look much better and healthy, which the McDonald's can incorporate here in the US and worldwide. Have you encountered such things in a foreign location of McDonald's?

Good one cgull. The McArabia is sold in the middle East. I don't think it is served in Israel. Also, in India pork based products are not served as well as beef burgers. 'Ham' burgers are not served in predominantly Muslim countries(its called a beef burger, although the name refers only to the German city of Hamburg)

It's only Pilsner if it came from Plzen! ;) Well, that's how it works over here, anyway. Over here they just introduced the egg mcmuffin a year or 2 ago. Before that you could only get burgers at 0600. I thought that was cool, though - better than having to wait until 1030!

Christine, when you travel to other countries, you will see the above and more, but some of them look healthy, so it is good.

Sunseven, thanks, yes different countries have different customs, that might be the reason they are adopting to each one of them instead of having standard menu everywhere.

Isabella, thanks, probably they will be selling local beers from every region I think :) Glad to see you have experienced the differences.

When I lived in Switzerland, we ate at McD's once in a while, when we traveled and needed something quick (usually only if other Americans were with us and didn't want to brave local places). I never eat McD's here in the U.S. However, everywhere we went, McD's offered a veggie burger--which I could eat. Also, I was impressed with the beer selections. Nice hub.

Thanks Stacie, they have plenty of soy meats that are as good as regular meats, they can offer it at McD's here.

Christina  says:

The Mcdonalds in Hawaii has Saimin (sort of like a glorified top ramen dish) and they have spam/portuguese sausage with their breakfast items.

In Turkey, I think, I saw a McFarm on the menu, not sure exactly what that was, but it hardly sounds appetizing.

Hi Jreuter, I heard McDonald's is doing really well in Europe compared to the US. They have modified the recipes so much we can hardly find this in the US. If McDonald's serves quality health foods, then they can even grow further.

McDonalds in some Asian countries don't sell McNuggets, but they sell real chicken pieces, bone and all. Fries taste better in other countries, as they still use the old recipe.

McDonalds isn't the only one, Burger King isn't the same elsewhere either, even in the U.S. Hawaiian menus often sell spam in some of the choices.

Thanks Jerilee, good to know about other restaurants, it makes sense. They have to adapt to local customs.

justin  says:

Whoa!

In Germany they serve beer with Bigmac's or any other burgers, thats weird, here in the U.S. they never serve beer.

cgull8m profile image

cgull8m  says:

Justin, it is not weird, in Germany they love beer and drink beer with their foods. It is a part of customs. If you live there, you will be doing the same. They have the finest beers in the world.
