Me and Sushi

This hub was inspired by Aya Hajime, and is dedicated to her :)

Nobody knew what sushi was back in the USSR. Eating raw fish was an unthinkable act of sacrificing your government-owned flesh to some wild bacteria and parasites - and was strongly discouraged as detrimental to your health and incurring extra healthcare expenses. And the quality of fish and meat in state groceries in most cases left no doubt those nice little creatures came in significant quantities as a free bonus with every purchase.

There were a couple of exceptions to that tradition though. In the wild Siberian lands that had long and severe winters they occasionally ate frozen fish and deer. Both had to be accompanied with a good amount of vodka, what believed to kill all parasites that survived freezing. Yet it was invariably own catch or kill, and nobody really did this to the West of Ural Mountains.

One would just cut very thin slices from a big chunk of frozen deer meat, and as for fish - one will soften its frozen body by hammering it with an axe butt on a door threshold before eating. Deer meat dish is called "stroganina" which means cut off, and fish dish is called "raskolotka", which surprisingly means hammered down. Both are really tasty, so if you happen to travel to Siberia in winter, you won't regret giving it a try if you get a chance.

I don't have any memories of my first encounter with sushi, for some reason it did not stick - may be I was too drunk to recognize what I was doing. What I do remember, that at some point after our move to USA my later wife (then girlfriend) and me started to frequent sushi bars and Japanese restaurants. She taught me how to eat with chopsticks, and we even invented our very own variation of sauce when we mingle vast amounts of wasabi into soy sauce.

At some point we picked our favorite restaurant that was not too expensive and had good service and excellent quality, and at least once a week we were there. We became regulars, we knew everybody and everybody knew us, we left good tips and all around it was very good and pleasant while it lasted. Then we got our first baby, and this completely ruined the tradition.

No longer we had enough time and money to go out, and often we did not have enough energy for that too. Those who had babies know what I am talking about, those who didn't can't understand this anyway. After some time I realized I have a sushi addiction. I was thinking about sushi, dreaming about sushi, talking about sushi and otherwise expressing my obsession with raw fish.

Not being able to frequent sushi places anymore, I had to invent something to take care of my passion. I ended up buying raw salmon at Korean grocery store or Whole Foods and just eating a chunk of raw salmon for dinner. Yummmmmmmmy! Well, after a couple of weeks it became not so yummy, and then the craving totally subsided.

Yet it did not go away completely, I still enjoy occasional dinner at a sushi place, and just last week had a pound of raw salmon for dinner. Nowadays I do think that occasional raw fish is our natural diet, cause if I go without it for a couple of weeks or so, my craving come back in a full force. There should be something there what my body needs, and I grew to appreciate its needs and satisfy them. I think my body pays me back for that.

If I'm ever in Siberia in the middle of the winter, I think I'll have more to worry about than some frozen fish ;) That said, mmm sushi. Unfortunately we butcher it here by having sushi bars with pre made sushi.. its not the same thing as the freshly made stuff

Yes, CW-gril, I love it :)

Miranda, trust me, people live there their whole lives and know how to deal with frost and snow. Well, I won't say I want to live there, but occasional visit are fun. :) As for freshly made ones - I think they make it to the order, at least in the restaraunts we go to :) BTW, where have you been, I missed you?

Ralph, I did not see any ad about Ann yet, but don't let her divert you from sushi! They are yummy! :)

Tanechka, you will love it if you give it a try, too. I promise :) And good luck to your kittens :)

Hi Violet, I am starting to think that hub that looked so plain and straight forward to me is indeed controversial. I did not thought that so many people here never tried sushi, even though they are available on every block around. Guys, those who did not try, you are missing on the whole universe of taste, trust me! :)

I love sushi. ADORE IT. Just thinking about it gets my taste buds tingling.

My kids love it too. I can't remember when I started them on it, but we'd get strange looks but plenty of compliments from others who thought it was wonderful that the kids enjoyed eating it. But how could they not?

My wife is allergic to seafood, but that hasn't stopped her from practising (she's not yet mastered) the art of making nori rolls. In fact we're having it tonight!

Misha, I like sushi, too. Being the carnivore that I am, I like raw meat in general. When I was a little girl I petitioned my parents for the right to eat raw steak. My father finally allowed it, although my mother was very concerned.

I love sushi, mostly fish-less (I am allergic to some fish, and can't afford to take a chance).  I learned to love sushi at a dinner hosted by some veggie friends.  Bill made the veggie sushi, served it in ceremonial style, and a whole new world opened.

It is beautiful food, and the rituals involved in making, serving, and enjoying it really made me think about the beauty, tradition, and necessity of food.

We have a wonderful Asian restaurant here, well-liked for their sushi, that does not have veggie selections on their menu.  But when they know you love the sushi experience, and you ask for no fish, they make a spectacular plate.

Wonderful Hub from you.  Konnichiwa.

I had lots Sushi & Shashimi during my visit to Tokyo this summer. In Tokyo Western food was cheaper but Japanese food similar prices.

Sometimes sushi is just superb, and other times there's nothing like a great big steak. It depends where your taste buds are at the time.

Great Hub Misha, but no way can I face eating Sushi. Smoked Salmon is the closest I get. Did accidentally order Steak Tartare once (thinking it was Steak Diane), and was horrified to realise it was raw minced steak. I had actually answered "hot" when they asked me if I wanted it "hot or cold", little realising they meant spicey or non spicey. Forced down a dozen mouthfulls or so, and it tasted pretty good, but could not get my head around the fact it was raw, plus the very offputting texture of raw meat. Guess it is a bit like eating Oysters, only even worse, they are still alive when you swallow them whole, (can't do this either) :)

Hi Misha - Must tell you a true story about sushi and children. My son (who is grown now and lives in another country) lived sushi from his first taste. I've never been keen.

When he was a teenager I went to a fancy reception with a friend, and the buffet was all sushi. My friend noticed that hardly anyone was eating it, and I said that my son would love it.

She said, you should take some home with you and give it to him.

And I asked, how would I do that, this is a very posh party.

She said that I could open my (very posh and expensive) handbag, and she would first line my bag with paper napkins, than put sushi in my hand bag while nobody was looking.

After a few seconds wondering which I cared more about - my handbag or my son, guess which won? You have a baby , so you will know - my son.

It took a few weeks for my handbag to stop smelling of sushi, but my son enjoyed it.

To make you jealous, I make my own sushi. Used to a lot, not so anymore--too time consuming. They may be the lame version, though, nothing raw--i'm allergic to the thought of anything raw.

But if the Siberians relish their meat raw and frozen, maybe, i can give it a try.

I have got to tell you Misha, that I too am full-on addicted to sushi. I'm totally landlocked right now so a good roll is hard to come by. The first thing I do when I go home or to any coastal city is locate a good sushi joint - a place I'll return to as often as possible while I'm there. Love it!

Also intrigued by the Siberian raw fish experience - if there, will try! :)

Thanks for this one!

GREAT hub Misha! When your children grow a little and the money is flowing - I highly recommend you head to Kauai in Hawaii. A hotel in Lihue has an entire 40' table with all you can eat sushi and sashimi for less than $20 every Sunday! Talk about heaven on earth!

A former boyfriend used to say it just wasn't fair that I could orgasm eating food lol Like the lady who said she did every time she sneezed. Someone said, "you poor dear, what are you doing about it?" She answered, "sniffing pepper" - that's me - eating as much sashimi as I can get my hands on :o

Sashimi is about the purest, leanest, healthiest food we can eat so I totally agree with you - our bodies thank us for it! For those just trying it, I'd stick with tuna or salmon though - sometimes the others can taste "fishy". My dad used to love steak tartar too - with capers - yummmm.

We have a nice Japanese restaurant not too far from us-- (30 miles one way, is not far where I live) They have great sushi but we usually get the sashimi appetizer (the fresh raw fish without the rice roll etc.) which is very nice.

Tasty hub-- I missed it earlier.

that's interesting what you said about your cravings must be your body telling you what it needs. sometimes I crave lemon - to the point where I will go out and buy lemons and slice one into slices and eat the slices. it sounds strange but I usually don't crave lemons again for a while. I have never tried sushi, though, or even smoked salmon ;_;

Misha profile image

Hi girls, I'm glad you found your way here. :)

Catherine, I gave up long enough on classifying in scientific terms what my body is craving. If it craves a pickle, i give it a pickle, and don't really care what exactly part of this pickle it needs. And no, my kids are not big fans of sushi just yet, but I have no doubt they will. :)

Cosette, I can totally relate on your lemon - i used to do the same as a teenager. :)

Sushi has to be only eaten and tried in the best restaurant with quality fish not cheapest, You cant save money on health and taste, Also atmosphere. Real sushi looks awesome and No yellow tail because, in Japan they don't have that.Ive been to over 100 restaurants around NY City. and the Caribbeans Sushi happens to be my favorite food for 1o years and I do have to tell you Change your pictures Please. If you going to try sushi 1 st time than go to Manhattan YAMA MAMA Its good for beginners. Mitoshi is not bad for oyster shot, Mhhhh i love them. Fushimi Good for parties large crowd. They have a nice atmosphere there. Anyways Eat healthy and know they have to have Real Japanese tea not imitation that's really bad for you along it tasting like plain hot water. Do not be cheap for your self.

Misha, I'm sorry, no I have never tried sushi. I have been tempted to on numerous occasions. But it is the thought of trying to get it down, that makes me think twice. I would not want to hurt someones feelings by having to spit it back out if I didn't like it. Now mind u if I had to eat it, down the old pipe it would go, no hesitation there, go figure. So I guess for me personally, it would more then likely have to be, the only thing left to eat on the planet, or in my back yard to do so. I think it goes back to my childhood watching my dad gut fish, and the pungent aroma, of smelly dead fish that keeps me away. Cause I enjoy trying new things.

Koma, I think I figured out where you were coming from with you cheap concerns. Asian store, right? Well, if Asian means low quality to you, you probably had different experience than me. At least in DC area there are several Asian stores that sell quality food, which is btw way tastier then produce from American grocery stores. In fact I don't remember a single case of low quality food from non-American stores. :)

Ever since I first tried Sushi, I have been hooked and have to have it at least a couple times a month. I think they must put something in the rice to make it so addictive. ha ha Still have some coordination issues using chop sticks, but keep working on it. Will get it right one of these days.
