The foremost night I used it, I found Jupiter without a lot of trouble. I pointed the scope at a bright dot in the sky that was not twinkling, and when I looked in the eyepiece, there was Jupiter. It was the size of an aspirin, its bands clearly visible and a couple of its moons brightly illuminated. Our own moon was highly visible and the craters were simply breathtaking.
Beyond those objects, I necessary to plug in the optional Autostar. The problem for us was that the telescope worked so well I had a difficult time figuring out if what I were looking at in the lens was what I wanted to find- hundreds of stars shine and twinkle in the scope when only a couple may be visible to the eye. I lost our way a couple times trying to find objects employing marker stars in the sky.
With the aid of the Autostar, I viewed vivid Saturn, its rings clearly defined. Saturn was the size of a tic-tac, although very sharp and bright. I easily found the Orion nebula, and Venus at half full state. Then I viewed a couple bright star clusters. The Messier and deep space objects, which cause up a immense part of what you will be viewing, were a bit dim and difficult to cause out.
If you are an astronomy buff, you will be able to identify these guys, and probably enjoy hours of apply with this telescope every night. However, for amateurs as if us, you will be required a highly nice map of the sky and info on the objects you will be seeing. There are some outstanding software titles out there- I apply Starry Night and don't leave the house without a elaborate star map when I are going to apply the telescope.
The lens that comes with the telescope will not be enough for most objects beyond the moon. I purchased a higher ability lens and apply it about 99% of the time. I truly recommend the Autostar for novices in order to receive the most out of this telescope. Otherwise, you will spend much time trying to find things that may or may not be there.
Finally, splurge on the Meade Field Tripod. Any small dab to the telescope makes the image completely blurry from the vibrations. The tripod highly aided with this problem. The telescope comes with a plate which can be screwed into the bottom of the mount to stabilize the set-up even more. I spent a couple days puzzling over it before I attempted attaching it, and it created all the difference. This was an outstanding purchase.
