While the rest of the world follows the metric system, we Americans follow our own measurement system. We have several units of measure, for volume, area, and length.

For length, we use inches, feet, yards, and miles.

12 inches = 1 foot

3 feet = 1 yard

5280 feet/1760 yards = 1 mile

For volume, we use ounces, pints, quarts, and gallons.

16 ounces = 1 pint

2 pints = 1 quart

4 quarts = 1 gallon

There are also measurement units for cooking. In cooking, there are ounces, pounds, teaspoons, tablespoons, and cups.

16 ounces = 1 pound

3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoons

16 teaspoons = 1 cup
