Information and Background

Typically you can receive a diploma by within a year by taking 18 credits. Your coursework will include learning the three main coding manuals, which include:

• CPT (Current Procedural Terminology),

• ICD-9-CM (International Classification of Diseases, 9th Edition, Clinical Modification), and

• HCPCS (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System).

If you complete this course and receive your diploma in medical coding and billing from such institutions as Drexel University, you are automatically qualified to take the national certification examination by the American Billing Association. National examinations are also administered by the American Academy of Professional Coders and American Health Information Management Association.

Financial Aid

Most colleges offer some sort of financial aid. You can also apply for federal aid by filling out an application form at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) also lists information on separate state aids that you may qualify for such as New York state’s Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) program for New York state residents.


Job Search

As a medical billing and coding specialist, you have the ability to work for hospitals or from home. It is best to first start working at a hospital before working from home so you receive the guidance during your initial training period. Once you have a few years under your belt, you can easily take use your skills to work both at a hospital and from home to receive more money.

When you first start your job search, it is best to seek the guidance of your career placement counselor at the college from which you received your diploma. He or she can provide you with the proper tools to start your job search.

There are several legitimate job listings online. Make sure you do not fall in the hands of schemers, there are plenty out there who would enjoy taking your money and providing you with no jobs.

Salary

It is not necessary for you to become certified nationally in order to receive job offers. However, if you are certified nationally, you are guaranteed a higher salary. The national average salary of a medical billing and coding specialist varies from $12.10 to $13.73 according to PayScale, an online compensation data provider.
