Meditation - Well of Worries

This is an advanced meditation but it is also a lot of fun. This particular exercise3 is one that I found in a book titled Maiden, Mother, Crone by DJ Conway and though I have altered it to fit my needs, the credit for the structure of this meditation must go to her. I highly recommend her books.

I use this when I find myself obsessing over a problem or worry. I have a bad habit of over thinking things and when I feel like I just can’t let go of something I use this.

This one can be done at anytime as long as you have a few minutes to yourself. It’s not as helpful in getting to sleep as you might think but if something is keeping you up at night, this might be worth a try.

You being, like always with a few deep cleansing breaths. Breathe in and out until you feel calm and steady. Using your Ground and Center technique here can be very beneficial.

Close you eyes and picture yourself in a garden. It’s a lovely garden full of flowers and trees. Walk around the garden and observe how it’s laid out. As you continue walk through the garden admiring its beauty you will come across a well. The well is big. It is an old fashioned well with stone sides and a little roof that has a bucket and rope attached to it. The well is very deep. You can call down into it and it will echo back to you.

Next to the well is a stone podium. On that podium is an old looking tablet of paper and a fancy pen. There is also a ball of string. Stand at the podium and list your worries on the paper. Whatever problem is bothering you the most should go first but you can list all of your worries.

When you are done, take the paper and fold it up tightly. Look around the well, there should be plenty of small stones lying about. Use some of the string to tie your worries to the stone. Take the stone to the well and drop it in. listen for the plunk of the stone hitting the water, it may take awhile as that stone has a long way to drop down.

Be sure to say your thank you’s, be it to the well itself, your higher power, God, Goddess or whatever you are most comfortable with. Allow the garden to fade from view as you slowly become aware of your surrounding again. Take a few deep even breaths before you continue with you day.

I love exploring the garden. Sometimes I do this exercise even when I don’t have a laundry list of worries. I spend my entire meditation session just checking out all the wonderful things in the garden. My garden has all kinds of creatures and animals populating it and is really fun to visit. Sometimes I imagine a bucket of pennies next to the well and I make a wish on the well instead of sending my problems to a watery end. This is a creative visualization that you can have a lot of fun with while it is helping you to ease your troubles. Remember sometimes your imagination can run away with you. If you ever see or experience something you don’t enjoy, you have the ultimate power to remove anything you encounter.
