Melatonin

Melatonin sleep aid is something that is considered very natural. It is produced by our brain and it is a a hormone that is secreted in the circulation. For most people a sleeping aid is a sleeping aid: they don't want to have anything to do with them. But as for depression, sleeping problems might be a result from abnormal brain chemical balances. This means that you might be having sleeping problems because the lack of melatonin.

Let's not take this too far. Now you are thinking that there is something wrong with your brain. No. Your brain is propably fine, the problem is that your life is all wrong. Let's explain this a little. When human still used to live in caves and so on, we only lived in the warm parts of the world. Sleeped at night when it was dark and were awake during the day when it was light. In the cave was dark and outside was light. The pineal gland which is the part of your brain that produces the melatonin, gets impulses from the hypothalamus. More accurately a part of hypothalamus called the suprachiasmatic nucleus which controls the bodys' inner clock. It gets impulses from receptors in your eyes which hyperpolarize when they are stimulated by bright light.

In the near equatorian parts of the world the changes between day and night are always very clear and simple. After six or seven a clock in the morning the sun goes up. It shines there the whole day until about eight or nine pm it goes down and it gets dark. Really dark. The nights are always dark there. That is what your body is used to. Darkness during the night and a lot of light during the day.

Now let's look at the life you are living right now, maybe in the northern parts of the world where it is almost always dark during the winter and always light during the summer. You live inside your homes with artificial lights. That means that it is light inside the house up to the point that you decide to go to sleep and turn off the lights. This is far from natural. And then in the morning again in some cases you suddenly turn the lights back on when you wake up. That means that you live in artificial light almost the whole day with the same brightness. Or even worse you live behind the curtains and stare at your computer the whole day. That's what I do most of the time.

On the opposite you might have daylight all around the night. This happens in the north parts of the world during the summer. I recently read about a study which proved that people from Greenland kill themselves the most during the months that there is light all the time. Even in the night. The constant brightness messes up with the bodys' serotonin production and gets them depressed. They have no will to live, and before someone points them to see a doctor they off themselves. This is a harsh example, but it is a good example of the fact that we are not meant to live where we can not survive without our isolated houses, clothes and cars. Besides the fact that our bodies don't survive from it, our heads get messed up also.

Now because the melatonin side effects have been shown to be so little, it is becoming a big part of peoples lives today as they try to reproduce the normal melatonin production using a supplement. This looks good so far but you should always keep in mind that the natural way is the best way. Move back to the equator and live a stress free life!
