If you have a king size bed, then buying a memory foam mattress in king size could be the one thing that changes your bed from providing a decent level of comfort into one that drastically improves your down-time. Otherwise known as sleep.

Memory Foam Mattress King Size

If you’re about to buy a new mattress, consider a memory foam mattress in king size. That is ... providing you've actually got a king sized bed. You don’t need to suffer from a sleep disorder or experience back problems to justify buying one.

I had one for a number of years and can attest to the improved comfort that manufacturers claim to offer. I’m now reduced to a simple memory foam topper but I’d rather have that than a basic foam mattress or run of the mill box-spring type.

A lot of people are a little suspicious of splashing that bit extra on a memory foam mattress in general, but I suspect it’s related to the hype. Whenever something appears as the best thing since sliced bread, it’s natural to assume it may not actually do what it says on the box.

Of course many consumers will buy anything because the hype is so attention grabbing. And more so if the new wonder product is surrounded by claims that it will improve/enhance/cure our ailments and lives in general. Miracle diet pills anyone … buy 100 get 10 free? Guaranteed to at least make you think you're going to shrink ...

Memory Foam Benefits

Memory Foam Matress - King Size

Look at that. Comfort personified. You know you want one. Buy one, get girl free ...

A memory foam mattress is not only a means of creating comfort whilst you slumber, it’s also an investment. And no, I don’t mean the financial kind. I’m not aware that second hand mattresses accrue value. Do they?

By investment I mean your general health and wellbeing. Investing in you doesn’t have a price - unless you call ill-health a cost? - but that doesn’t remove the fact that it’s an asset. Your health may not be tangible, you may not be able to box it up and sell it. But - last time I looked – the importance of your health was right up there with ‘quality of life’.

Both are intrinsically linked and as far as I’m concerned, when I sleep well, I feel well. Pure math.

A king size memory foam mattress is obviously made from memory foam. It’s not a new invention and stems from NASA’s research into providing better comfort for seating on aircraft. It’s a thicker form of mattress than comparable non-memory foam types and many find that it aids sleep disorders, soothes back ailments and make those that suffer from arthritic or rheumatic complaints more comfortable.

Obviously, in recent years, memory foam anything burst into our consciousness, thanks to the world of media. Accompanied with the pre-requisite hype of course. For me, that’s what usually puts me off buying the latest parade of wonderful, life enhancing gadgets/toys/miracle underwear from infomercial sites like ‘As Seen On Tv’. Call me a cynic but you know, all that toothy grinning and buy buy buy stuff makes me a tad suspicious.

Memory Foam Is Supportive

See? But don't play with it. Sleep on it.
See? But don't play with it. Sleep on it.

I don’t know about you but - you can’t deny that their main interest isn’t in you. It’s in your money. However, memory foam really is a cool invention and even cooler to sleep on. Well, maybe not cool, I’d say comfortable.

This is how memory foam works: it distributes weight, as evenly as possible. A standard mattress supports your weight. A foam memory mattress still does that, but it also spreads it out, along the surface on which you’re laid. Memory foam contains an open cell composition that allows it to absorb heat plus weight – it reacts by moulding to the shape of your body.

Thus making you feel more comfortably supported.

Memory Foam Mattress - Before You Buy

A New Memory Foam Matress

Will aid sleep, no doubt. But shop around first. There's plenty on the market.
Will aid sleep, no doubt. But shop around first. There's plenty on the market.

Don’t rush off and buy a memory foam mattress in king size, single size or any size. Consider your options. Go and test a few. Ask around or find out more information about them. Anytime I’ve come to a stage whereby I may need to part with a lump of my hard earned cash, I’ve never bought the first thing I’ve come across - in order to satisfy a need.

I’ve always looked at what’s available and balanced what it is I need against cost/ quality/ use and longevity. There’s no reason you shouldn’t do the same.

Sleep well.

This is without a doubt the best hub on king-size memory foam mattresses I have ever read. ;)

I'm sold on the idea though, especially as they were designed for space rockets. But I probably couldn't afford one, I usually sleep in a big pile of empty beer cans, which strangely; have a kind of memory of their own.

p.s. congrats on 100 hubs. =)

Hey Mrvoodoo :) Hows's yourself? I found this a bit tricky. I done reviews and behaved myself but I fight with the frog, you know? Plus I really did have the bed of bed - memory foam IS fantastic. My ex-husband got it. His new girlfriend seems to like it, anyway.

And a mattress topper isn't bad but I'd rather have the full mattress.

Can't fault you on your tin-can bed. How novel and unique?!

And thanks. I half thought about making it special but hey! I'm nothing if not different ;)

Yes, they have their own, but they're always changing places. A couch in the bedroom, the couch downstairs, my Lazyboy, my bed, the floor in the bath, the floor downstairs. You get the picture, they drive me nuts. LOL

Excellent hub on a worn out topic. I must say that despite the fact that I did quite a lot of research on memory foam mattresses I still enjoyed reading this hub.

A job well done!

ralwus - first ... you have a lazyboy. I'm impressed. My dream chair. Honest! And you know you love your puppies :)

Laura - you wouldn't believe how long this hub was hanging round. A good couple of months. And I really did have the damn mattress. And the minute I get some brass again, I'm buying another :)

KCC - you know how comfortable they are then?! Aren't they the best? I honestly can't wait to buy a new one. I'll have to of course but I will treat myself at some point.

Lisa - lol I can't sleep on soft and squishy. Plays havoc with my back. Between half a lifetime of ballet and a hundred falls from horses I've got a real glass back!

I have a Tempur-pedic and it is quite awesome. I would have just stuck with my old old mattress but my other half has back problems so we had to get something better.

He also has the pillow which was around $100, so I didn't get one I still have my crappy pillow from 10 years ago!

Maybe when my AdSense ship comes in, I'll be able to get the pillow too :)

Apparently, there was knock-offs now which are cheaper, but not as good. Has something to do with the quality of the memory beads within the mattress. According to my other-half Tempur-pedic has the patent on the best quality memory beads - lol. Maybe I should eat some of those beads and it will improve my memory :)

Shiba - there's always knock-offs. Some things in life are paying the better price for (though not all) and I'd pay extra for a genuine, top quality mattress. Sleep is so important and the more comfortable and rested you are at night, the better you are during the day.

Don't be eating the beads. Play the brain game thing on the Nintendo. It's a load of fun for one thing. Though I don't suppose it's upped me in the smarts stakes :)

Helen - they really are worth it huh?! I know they're not cheap but they're fantastic for backs, aches and pains and a myriad other little body niggles. I also know they're not a cure all but they do make a big difference.

So FD do you think that it's best to go with a tempurpedic name brand or the knock-offs are okay? The hubster and I have a sleep number mattress for us because I prefer a marshmallow for a mattress and he a granite slab, but I'm thinking some variety for the guest room.

frogdropping profile image

Ethel - go treat yourself :)

Nelle - I'd honestly buy the real thing. They're worth it and if you shop smart, you'll find a decent priced one. Go find a regular priced one - then start looking for the same, but check out the discount market, the closing down spots (current economy is hurting many businesses), end of line stockists. You'll find cheaper if you shop around.

And I've seen some crap on the market that's the 2nd grade stuff that's almost as expensive as tempurpedic. Business has no morals! And you can combat the bed problem by buying half and half. I forget where I saw it but there's a few places that will supply a double/king size in two different mattress. I will have a scoot and see if I can find it :)
