Improve your memory using physical exercise
69Physical exercise is one of the keys to a far better memory
Today, a good memory is essential to enable us to live a fulfilling life. As part of the care you take memory exercises are an essential ingredient and no matter what age you are, 8 through to 80, physical exercises are an integral part of this care.
One really important way to do this is to undertake physical exercise; and this applies whether you’re only 8 or 80!
For the best effect to help sustain our memory physical exercises should be done on a regular basis. The more frequently you exercise the better, 4 times a week is ideal……...and remember, the more frequent you exercise the better adapted both your body and your mind will become and the more likely it will be that you will enjoy sustained benefits.
So why is it important that we exercise?
Well there are many reasons but one that is especially important is that regular exercise helps to alleviate the negative impact of stress on our brain and our memory.
But don’t think that you have to go out and take up a sport or do something sophisticated in a gym, although you could and this would be great, but the reality is that even the most simple of sporting or physical activities will help to reduce the impact caused by stress so creating a more balanced condition.
So why is exercise so important to the brain and improving memory?
Research reveals that: exercise improves blood flow to the critical regions of the brain responsible for memory; it is also thought that exercise supports the production of brain cells, a fact that has been proven in mice!
It has been shown that exercise also improve the brain’s functioning. For example it directly improves the performance of the hippocampus, one of the oldest parts of our brain. This is located right in the centre of the brain and plays an important role in memory especially spatial learning; importantly it also enhances what is called synaptic plasticity and neurogenesis; and is also been shown to help to protect neural pathways in many neuro-degenerative diseases.
Most importantly it is thought that exercise can help to reduce the risk of developing dementia.
So get out and get active.
Do things that are fun and you’ll come to enjoy life more, if you don’t you’ll not keep the exercise going for long.
