Men Wearing Women's Shoes In Public

Don't Drink And Drive And Wear Women's Shoes

Of course, some men who wear women's shoes in public are much less lucky than the businessman in the story to the left. He was only glimpsed by an understanding fellow member of the public.

But a man in Hartland ran into some trouble when the police pulled him over for suspiciously bad driving. It is not known if the man was inebriated or not (he was), or how far over the legal limit he was (he was completely sozzled), but he found great difficulty with the field sobriety test when asked to stand on one leg due to the high heels he was wearing.

He was subsequently taken away and charged.

As many of you might know, I write quite extensively about men wearing lingerie. It's a delightful topic, and I enjoy it, especially when the discussion turns to men leaving their homes wearing a piece or two of lingerie under their clothing. Men who wear lingerie can usually get away with wearing at the very least a pair of panties under their business suit. Men who wear women's shoes, on the other hand, have a larger hurdle to face. It's hard to wear a pair of women's shoes without having people notice, or is it?

Whilst researching this piece, I came across this delightful piece, Fancy Shoes (link opens in a new window), which details the writer's experience seeing a businessman wearing a pair of purple suede flats quite brazenly out in public. Nobody else seemed to notice the fact that the businessman walking down the street with his briefcase and cup of coffee, looking exactly like all the other harried types out on a business day, was wearing a pair of purple suede women's shoes. The author of the piece comments that they only noticed because of the noise the shoes made, and the fact that the businessman was forced to stop at the curb and adjust them, as one of the shoes had worked its way loose.

Judging by the blog's location, this incident must have occurred in Seattle, a city known for both its reserve and its vibrant alternative community. Were this fellow to have been mozying down to a meeting in Houston, Texas perhaps he would have left the flats at home, then again, perhaps not.

So then, men who wear women's shoes. Do you wear them out in public? It is true that with a pant of a longer length, one can almost get away with wearing flat plain shoes with almost no fear of being noticed whatsoever. As long as the pant cuff covers the upper part of the shoe, and as long as the shoe doesn't have a distinctly feminine point to it, one might happily be able to go from the boardroom to the restaurant without anyone blinking an eye. High heels are much harder to get away with, as are any shoes which are more brightly colored than the clothing you are wearing.

There's a poll on the subject on the He Wears Heels blog, which you can get to by following the link. The great thing I like about writing these types of articles is that they foster discussion amongst men with similar interests, who many times might otherwise feel that they are alone, as in the immortal words of Little Britain like 'the only gay in the village' (If that didn't make sense, toddle along HERE and feast your eyes.)

Additional note: This is not to say that men who wear women's shoes are gay. It's just a simile.

Hi Hope

Yes I do wear heels in public. I useually wear cowboy boots to work but I also have a pair of ladies boots with a 3.5" stacked heel that I also wear to work on a regular basis. I have one pair of almond toes black pumps with a 1/2" plat and 4" stiletto heel. I have a long drive to work and some times I will wear a pair of pumps for the drive, well last week I was wearing the black pumps with black trouser socks and black slacks. When I got to work and parked one of my coworkers parked next to me and got out of his car and stood there waiting on me and there was no way i could change into my boots so I thought what the hec and got out of my truck and he never noticed now these shoes sort of look like my cowboy boots and since the heel was covered it was not that noticable. What fun I wore those pumps all day.

Hi Hope,

I too wear women's shoes most days. Heel heights varying from 2" to 4". Heel style is block. Sure they are from a female point of view, standard day wear and not "sexy", but I do enjoy wearing them. Billyb had a great day it seems.

Pity more guys who like heels don't just get on and do it.

Men wearing high heels is no phenomenon. Secretly, I would say the number of men in heels would be close to the number of women who wear heels, regularly. Getting these men to openly declare their secret desire to add high heels to their active wardrobe, is dependent on the social acceptance. Men are no different than women in a desire to wear heels. They don't want to force their will on everybody, but they would like to be treated with the respect any human being is entitled to and should be afforded.

In the 70' and 80's many men were noted to wear the funky styled high heeled platforms. It was tied too much to a "what's in it for me, sucka" and "be your own man" movement from the 60's - peace and love" movement. It looked too "bad" to be good and to me personally, it looked cartoonish and sloppy, which kind of turn me off. So when those who supported this look moved on, the high heeled platforms became historic novelties to remember when.

I wear heels all the time in private and out in public on some weekends under long jeans or slacks. Out, I wear 4-5" heels, both block and stiletto, that are look like men's shoes or boots. Most people don't notice and no one has ever made a negative comment. I have had a few good comments and one guy asked a lot of questions. I think he wanted to wear them too.

I still have apprehension and wish society would get over their stereotypes and prejudices. I am happily married to a heel loving gal that encourages me. Heels are an object of affection and I don't think a chromosome dictates who will love them and who won't. I happen to love them, collect them (I love strappy 5" stilettos), and wear them because I love the way they look, the way they feel and the way they make me feel. Just because society has been programmed that they are for women only doesn't make it true. Men have worn heels throughout history. They do not indicate sexual preference.

I am a boot lover myself and always envied women for being able to wear them. Last year I plunged in and started to wear boots to work. I refuse to say they're women's boots but they still are: Western style with 3" underslung heels and very pointy toes in black nappa. They are a dream come true for me but for most people wrong for 3 reason's for a guy to wear: they're boots, they've heels and they're pointy. I'm only interested in the most masculine heel style possible in women's boots but I refuse to give up on the pointy toes or hide the heels completely under long pants. They don't have to look like men's shoes either, I've worn these boring things long enough. Once I tasted the sweetness of wearing these heeled boots I couldn't go back and if this means facing ridicule or negative comments from somebody from time to time: so be it, but I have to admit it's not easy. But worth it...

I have worn woman's shoes for nearly 40 years. High heels hold no interest for me. My interest is flats. When you wear socks that are the same color as the shoes, the shoes are much less noticeable. I wear them in public. As I type this in a public library, I am wearing gray patent flats, gray socks, and gray pants. Sometimes people do notice and give a quick glance. I avoid reacting to this.

Hey guys, i have worn womens shoes since i was 7 years old, starting out with a pair of tinker bell strap ons, and then gradually progressed on to wearing the 1980's KangaROOS in many different colors and designs, i also wear a pair of womens skechers "spokes" that are white, red, and black size 11. i see nothing wrong with doin this because i have adapted to wearing only womens clothes to begin with, no one really recongnises me much, and my wifey doesnt mind it much, she sees it as kinky kind of and ok. I think men should do this more!

I am another guy who started wearing womens shoes. I'm single and straight and wear basic flats in black and dark blue that have a square toe box. They are much lighter to walk in and are more comfortable than most mens shoes I have.

Hi, I have just as strong a passion for heels as any gender girl I know. My partner loves them and always gets me a pair out when I'm stressing!

Would love to wear womens shoes out and about a bit but its soooo difficult identifying a pair that are;

a) comfortableb) don't look too feminineandc) satisfy the desires and urges

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've been wearing heels off and on since I was a teen, and never grew out of it. These days, I like to co-ordinate my heels with the rest of my outfit, and guys - you have no idea how sharp a nice pair of heels complements your wardrobe until you actually go out and DO it. You'd be surprised at how many good compliments you get from ladies if you do about it with style. These days I wear anything from 2-5" and varied styles, and never had a bad experience yet! Guys...get with it, and let the heeling experience begin!

I enjoyed reading the comments preceeding mine and I am very much in agreement with most of them! I have been ONLY wearing womens shoes for 10 years now. I live in a liberal city and own my business in a creative field so that makes it easier. I wear flats to high heels, but I spend most of my time in mid heel loafer pumps or wedges. I do wear pointy high heel pumps with long bootcut jeans and the shoes appear as boots that way. I believe the two most important factors is confidence and appropriatness, so it's important to find a shoe that goes well with your clothes and keep your feet in excellent condition free of hair!

I have worn mostly women's shoes for many years, having only a few "men's" pairs in my wardrobe for occasions where they are strictly called for. All of my sneakers, loafers, and sandals are women's (LOVE to wear Keds), and I comfortably wear them in public. In recent times I have gotten more secure in wearing things like ballet flats with jeans, although generally with darker or matching color hose so that they don't stand out blatantly. When in NYC I frequently wear ballet flats along with ladies' jeans and tops in public, including at restaurants often with a bra underneath. Last winter I began to wear heeled boots with jeans and now I can't get enough of it! Candidly, I have preferred feminine shoes since I was a little kid, and always (secretly)loved having my mom buy me the style of Keds that were generally meant for girls.

I am totally with you all... I love the way heels feel, but I cant get past the social barrier that is in place. I'm a tall fellow, and in heels im a VERY tall fellow! So in the end I just dont feel the comfort level as most of you all feel.

I live in a very conservative area. If anyone saw me in heels, everyone would automatically assume that I'm gay or effiminate (oh how closed-minded the world is today)!

I wish for one moment, I could do what I wanted and not have to deal with the social stigma that comes with wearing heels. I dont have the desire to really wear womens clothing with them, just the heels thanks!!!!

I wear heels at home all the time and would love to wear them were ever i am but being an architect it doesnt open up the shirt and tie office to wearing heels easily and would love to have the confidence just to wear them in public.

Very similar to previous comments this can be miss understood as your gay or effeminate, however being 6'3" + 5"heels cant see public persuasion changing anytime soon.

Funny thing is all the girls that work in shoe shops seem to love guys in heels but its just not publicly accepted that ure a straight guy how just enjoys heels and the premise that, heels u either get them or u don't stands very true.

i wear female shoes full time most of the time i wear sandles with up to a 3 inch heel but most oftern i wear flat sandles as i live on a boat and high heals are not that good for climbing in and out of the dingy.

i find that when i am wearing shoes with a heal it throwes my center of gravity forward and takes the load from my back which is great for me as i have a broked back in three places and wearing shoes with a heal eases the pain a lot (we should get doctors to advise men to wear heals when they have a bad back)

i also love girls school sandles and i have a couple of pairs.

I only wear women's shoes. I got rid of all my men's shoes about two years ago and haven't looked back. I prefer boots to pumps or sandals and all my boots have 3-inch heels or higher. I do not currently own any flats.

My feet have become so accustomed to heels that wearing flat shoes feels strange and ackward. It was difficult at first wearing heels in public but it became second nature to me in a very short matter of time. Now it is something I do everyday without any thought at all. I do not try to hide my shoes, I'm very proud of them and do not care who sees them. I openly go into shoe stores and try on heels in front of everybody who's there. I'm fortunate in that I have small feet. I wear a size 8 1/2 in women's so I'm lucky to be able to go into any women's shoe store and they will have my size in stock.

I do get noticed and the sound is also a dead giveaway. When women hear me walking by they usually take a good look down at mt feet. I've received some very nice compliments on my shoes and clothing. I've yet to receive any negative comments.

I encourage men to wear their heels openly in public for the world to see.

Dirk Van de Velde  says:

Wow, thanks Chris for your encouraging comment.

I desire to wear knee high boots with a 3-4" high block heel. I wear high heel shoes with a small but high (4") heel at home - stiletto styled shoes. It wasn't a coincidence when I first tried the shoes I'm wearing now: I could walk on them like a pro. Like I never worn anything else in my life. When I get home from work, the first thing I do is slip them on and not take them off until I go to bed. I just love the feel of walking with high heel shoes.

It enforces the feminine side of me and I'm proud of it. A lot of my female friends already told me that I'm very much in touch with my feminine side and they are right. At least they accept me as I am.

All I'm looking for now is knee high boots with laces in front, a high 3" or 4" heel that is thick. I've seen a girl wear them on the bus and I still regret not asking her where she bought them. They looked so nice and sexy, they would surely make me look nice, but above all feel good. I wish I could see that girl again, or find the boots she was wearing. She was all in black and looked like a gothic, but a very good looking one! I can still see the boots before my eyes. I hope to find them one day and wear them in public, proudly!

I have worn womens shoes off and on for a while now, sometimes flats and sometimes heels. I find a 2 3/4 inch heel is very comfortable for me. One time in a department store I was being helped by a saleslady while buying pantyhose she said I was to tall for the hose they had I replied that I had on heels and pulled up my pantleg and showed off my high heel pumps she said that I walked very well better than some women in heels

I wear heels in public from time to time. Usually a wedge or platform. Because I have a stocky build I can't realy see myself sporting pumps or stelitos. But I do enjoy the comfort of wearing heels because I have a bad back and the heels do work to relieve the pain.

I love high heeled boots (three inches and up) and have worn them for years, infact I don't have any "mens" shoes. I do a lot of walking and find heels rebuild my arches after a long hike. According to a pedorthist I went to heeled boots are the best orthotic I can wear. My advice is to just do it.
