From the sales side of the counter, one of the main jobs of the salesperson is to meet, greet and make a connection with YOU, the potential buyer. What does this have to do with you as the buyer? Just about everything. If you don't open up, at least a little, there's no way the salesperson can help you.

The Salesperson's job is to determine your needs, and help you, in order to find out these things there will be questions. If you're too embarrassed to answer questions about yourself, your relationship or too ignorant to know what color gold your wife likes, get over it or learn!

In my experience in sales, I would sometimes meet people who don't want to talk about any aspect of their relationship or themselves. Here are a few questions that we are probably going to ask and the reasons why:

1) Introduction questions "Hi I'm ___ what's your name", "You look familiar" etc - It's not a trick, we need to know who you are to address you properly and build a relationship, or maybe we really know you!

2) "Where are you from?"/"Where did you meet"/other location questions - maybe the location has a significance, maybe the salesperson will have a connection, or maybe you will even know of each other.

3) What type of jewelery does your girlfriend like? What have you bought her before? - These questions are not a sales question, you should know at least what color gold she likes and the things you got her. That makes it easier to show you something she MIGHT like.
