Mental Health and HubPages

The mental health disorder costs of HubPages participation is $$$$$...

  • "(Mental health disorder) potential is a very rough prediction of (mental illness) per page view based on the subject matter of the hub."
  • "It can take a month or so for new (mental illnesses) to be recognized."

If these statements look familiar it is because they are quoted directly from HubPages, with a few word replacements to show the true meaning.

What are the true mental health costs of hubtivity? Beyond the physical health risks associated with long term computer use and exposure, there may be a link between participation on HubPages and Mental Illness. This hub will explore the true cost of producing hub after hub, making comments, and collecting money from AdSense? Hubpages claims the cost is zero dollars. This hub will explore some of the hidden costs of being an active, or inactive member.

Hubpression is Rampant

"I made my first hub today, and I haven't made thousands yet. I quit."

Post Sign-up Hubpression

Post Sign-up Hubpression is a serious disorder that inflicts those who have recently created an new baby HubPages account. Sporadic writing or loss of interest in HubPages all together mark this disorder's defining features. If untreated, Post Sign-up Hubpression can result in long term Major Hubpression if not treated in a timely manor.

Major Hubpression

Major Hubpression is characterized by a severe disinterest in writing on hubpages that lasts for no less than two months.  Major hubpression is the most common cause of hubber suffering in the world.  Many hubbers lose interest and never come out of their hubpression, sometimes never returning to write after the onset.

Hubsomnia: Insomnia Due to Hubbing

Starring at the glowing screen into the wee hours of the night. The later it gets the more your eyes get red and dry. You'd go to sleep, but you are too concerned about pumping out enough hubs to meet the hubchallenge quota, make a lot of money, or write some creative poetry as you are in a dreamlike state. Darn, your real job is getting sooner and sooner as the morning matures.  Must.. finish.. the hub.

Do You Suffer From Hubsomnia?

How much sleep do you normally get?

  • 1-2 hours
  • 3-4 hours
  • 4-5 hours
  • 6-7 hours

Hub Addiction: Addiction to all things HubPages

This list of warning signs could indicate that you are a hubaholic:

  1. You have a family member who also has battled hub abuse.
  2. You have moved on to harder stuff. You started with a few "how to" hubs and now write much more ridiculous and worthless hubs like this one.
  3. Writing through pain or stiffness in the fingers due to hubtivity.
  4. You hide your hubtivity from family and friends.
  5. You have neglected basic activities of daily living to hub. Your work performance is affected or you are considering quitting your job to become a full-time hubber.
  6. You've become disinterested in watching television for hours each evening.

If you notice that you are showing some of these signs, then there is help in the Hubaholics Anonymous program.

Blake Flannery's True Identity

I'm actually a girl suffering from Multiple Hubdentity Disorder. Pay no attention to the hair on my chest.
I'm actually a girl suffering from Multiple Hubdentity Disorder. Pay no attention to the hair on my chest.

Multiple Hubdentity Disorder

You have 15 different HubPages accounts that you feverishly try to maintain, but you are running out of hours in a day to keep up. Some of them are nice, and others are jerks. Some are like little kids and others are adults. You even have arguments with your separate selves in the forums and comment sections of hubs. This one is extremely difficult to treat, and can be debilitating. This usually develops from hub addiction.

*The actual Multiple Personality Disorder.

Schizohubia

Not to be confused with Multiple Hubdentity Disorder, Schizohubia actually has nothing to do with having more than one hubber identity. Schizohubia traits include hubotic traits such as hublusions or hublucinations.

Hubbers with Schizohubia may have a hublusion that he or she is being "cheated" by Google or HubPages. He or she may see earnings that are not really there. These symptoms must be present while the hubber is awake and interfere with normal hubtivity to be significant. Schizohubia is usually treated with an antihubotic to help with the hublusions and hublucinations. Onset usually occurs in the teens through late 20's.

*The real Schizophrenia.

Hub-Polar Disorder

Hubbers with Hub-Polar Disorder, or HPD, go through periods of time where you can't stop writing uninhibited hubs about who knows what. Then you have dry spells when you can't think of anything to write about. You call it writers block. You start sleeping again, maybe too much, loose interest in your fans, feel hopeless about your writing. Then WHAM! you are back at it typing until your fingers bleed. This disorder used to be called Manic-Hubpressive Disorder.

*The real Bipolar Disorder.

Narcisshubtic Personality Disorder

One of the most difficult HubPages disorders to treat, Narcisshubtic Personality Disorder usually initiates after at least two months on HubPages. There have been, however, some extreme cases starting at only a week or so. These cases should be differentiated from Hubological Lying Disorder.

Hubbers with NPD frequent the forums telling everyone how awesome they are, but they do so in a hurtful way. They usually claim to be making hundreds of dollars a month from adsense, and want to tell you all about it. These hubbers love to tell you what you are doing wrong, and they don't mind telling you harshly. They are always right about anything, and somehow are experts in all fields. "I don't know" has been erased from their vocabulary.

*The actual Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

HubPhobia

HubPhobia is the intense, extreme, fear or dislike of hubPages. Although this one is rare, it happens from time to time. HubPhobic people may have had a traumatic event sparking their fear of HubPages. Maybe someone made a comment on their hub other than, "Nice Hub" and the person didn't know what to do.

The best results for curing this phobia is systematic desensitization. In other words, starting slowly and working up to writing hubs again. If going to the website elicits a phobic response, you may need to start by simply googling "HubPages" but not clicking on the link. Then after a few session of this, work up the courage to click the link sign up for HubPages and make hubs again.

The True Cost of Hubbing

So next time you try to figure up the true cost of writing hubs, you can figure in your mental health. These HubPages mental disorders can be easily overlooked. Some could even be seen as positive traits instead of mental disorders. Good luck and stay mentally healthy.

Mental Disorders of HubPages Disclaimer

No real or fictitious characters were harmed in the making of this hub, and no animals were represented in the stories or depictions. All HubPages disorders are totally make-believe. Yes, that thing you used to see on Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. The descriptions above are purely to poke fun at human behavior and involvement on HubPages, and in no way are meant to poke fun at actual mental illness, which is serious.

hahahaha LOVE the "do!" It's really YOU!

I am definitely hubaffected. I have to study the categories to figure out which trait is worst- several suit my behavior, haha. Mostly hubsomnia and hubaddiction. Gotta find a seven step program...

I love it when you let your humor fly. Thanks for lightening a rough day at the mortuary.

Rose,

You are not alone. On average, hubbers suffer from 2.8 mental hub-disorders. These co morbid conditions create a cycle of illness that is difficult to overcome.
