Fifteen percent of the population suffers from some form of mental health issue. Nearly 2/3 of individuals who have a mental health disorder do not seek any form of treatment. Perhaps some of these individuals donít even know that they have any mental health ailments that can be treated and controlled. They simply think that it is normal to feel anxious or depressed throughout life. Some of the 2/3 of people don't seek treatment because they feel embarrassed. They don't want to feel like a failure or feel that they are helpless. Others donít seek treatment because they simply do not have the finances to be able to do so.
What people need to understand about mental health issues and disorders is that they are not the result of social misunderstandings or mistakes that they've made in their lifetime. They are legitimate medical illnesses that are treatable and very much real. Many people will never accept the fact that a mental illness exists. Theyíll tell you that if youíre depressed, you can get over it. Theyíll say that if you have a fear of leaving your house, face the fear head on. Those individuals donít have a clue what they are talking about. They are unaccepting of anyone that is not in the norm. There are many mental health disorders that cannot be overcome by simply wishing them away or facing your fears. They are treatable with therapy and sometimes medication. There are so many different diagnoses of mental health disorders. Some are much more severe than others. The severe ones may not be curable or improve with therapy. However, medications can help to regulate them and they can be monitored. Other mental health disorders that deal with anxiety or depression can be helped with therapy, medication or both. Insurance companies, most likely, will help their members out with paying some portions of therapy. However, many times the co-pays are high or they only pay up to a certain amount. Taking care of mental health issues can be quite costly, but can be priceless when it is gotten under control. Some of the most famous names throughout history have suffered from various mental health disorders and issues. Beethoven, Winston Churchill, Thomas Edison, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Sir Isaac Newton are only some of the famous names that we all know who lived with their mental health being stable. As we all know, their names are famous because they accomplished some brilliant and amazing feats. This only goes to prove that mental health doesn't have to be a hindrance. It is simply something that needs to be discovered and dealt with properly. Life is entirely too short to spend it being miserable or confused. Take control of your life and don't let it take control of you.- Aspergers Syndrome
Asperger's Syndrome in Laymen's Terms The syndrome was named for a Viennese physician, Hans Asperger. He published a paper describing the pattern of behaviors witnessed of boys who had normal IQs and language development, but who were thought to be

Very interesting! You will make people think about this and some who need help will be persuaded to get it.
In the early to mid 1990s, the Amer. Psychiatric Assn. felt that 98% of America was adversely affected by mentla illness - alcohol and substance addictions and abuse - if not themselves a user, then a codependent or vitim of the person's bad behaviors. Codependent Personalty Disorder was proposed for the diagnostic manual in the late 1990's. It's not there yet, to my knowledge.
Among the W2W, Welfare-to-Work populations targeted under Welfare Report in America - and I worked directly woith these folks - they suffered an AVERAGE of 4 Severe Mental Disorders (SMD) each, one often being a substance/alcohol problem.
So, I think the percentage of USA suffering mental concerns is over 15% and many do not report it, seek treatment, or even know that they have any.
Abuse ofl all kinds is a mental health disorder as well - for the doer and for the victim or survivor. That's more than 15% of the population by itself.
Great Hub, and yes, please do write MORE!
Thanks for your comments. This is really appreciated.
I think your stats. may be a little low. I believe it is 25% of people have a mental disturbance, and I believe that number to be even higher because of the number of people who have never sought treatment. Interesting topic!
Thank you for sharing this wonderful hub. I have devoted my life to helping people who suffer from mental illness and addictions find relief, recovery, and even healing. There is too much suffering out there; but there is joy, peace, and love too. Please feel free to see how I try to help others in new ways also. Sincerely: Gary Eby, author and therapist.
Great Hub. People need to be more aware of Mental Health conditions so they can understand them.
Nice Hub! I can relate to it. You see I'm a coach and I'm definitely aware of mental health problems.
I know that many individuals suffer with the set backs of a mental illness. Yet society fails to realize that they are causing these individuals to continue to fail due to there own lack of inteligence on the illness. Society today still looks at a Mental Iillness as being demean possed (or a misfit). When the general population hears the word Mental iillness they do not see a productive citizen. Many people have the wrong picture of being mentally ill, they think when an individual is diagnosed with such an iillness they are insane. How wrong this mindset is, many people suffer with one form or another of this disease but out of fear do not seek out to get help. I wonder what your thoughts are on "if the United States passed more bills demanding insurance companies to pay more on the empowerment and stability with in this population if the suicide and homicide rate would decrease?
