Recalled Cat Food List

What is all the Pet Food Recall Really About?

What's in the pet food to make it included in the recent recall:

  • Wheat Gluten = The left over stuff when wheat flour is milled until the wheat starch is gone and only the wheat's gluten is left.
  • Rice Protein Concentrate = A cheap high-protein ingredient.
  • Melamine = A chemical used in fertilizers and plastics.
  • Cross-Contamination = Vat was not cleaned between products. Contents of one type of pet food included in something which doesn't included those contents. Same Stuff Goes In All Products.

Use of corn, wheat, or soy which cause skin irritation, hair loss, fever, ear infections, kidney failure, liver failure. dental disease, obesity, chronic digestive problems, bloat, heart disease, and hyperthyroidism.

Because manufacturers need to ensure that dry foods have a long shelf life (typically 12 months) to remain edible through shipping and storage, fats used in pet foods are preserved with either synthetic or "natural" preservatives. Synthetic preservatives include butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), propyl gallate, propylene glycol (also used as a less-toxic version of automotive antifreeze), and ethoxyquin.

Use of by-products. By-products are ingredients used which are not fit for human consumption. By-products are often floor sweepings from a rendering plant. "Animal by-product" is rendered product from animal tissues, exclusive of any added blood, hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents except in such amounts as may occur unavoidably in good processing practices." Pet food labels contain the words "meal" or "byproduct" on the ingredient label. Inedible byproducts such as bone, fat, heads, hair, feet and condemned offal are used in commercial pet food. These materials are sent to a rendering plant for processing into pet food products.

"Meat" is often rendered dogs and cats as well as other animals such as road-kill. When the source of the meat is known it will be listed as beef, poultry, chicken, turkey, etc. If the source of the meat is not known it is simply called "meat.

Rather than the wholesome pictures shown on the pet food packaging, rendering companies dispose of millions pounds of inedible waste each day including, heads, feet, stomachs, intestines, spinal cords, tails, restaurant grease, feathers, bones and dead or diseased animals rejected from slaughterhouses for use in manufacturing pet food. Amazingly, animals from research laboratories may be rendered into pet food as well.

Ol' Roy dog food, which is considered one of the poorest quality dog foods on the market, scored 5 out of 10.

The life span of your pet should be at least 20 years. Your pet's diet strongly influences your pet's life expectancy. Always look for a quality pet food which scores 10 out of 10.

My Cat died last week after eating special kitty DRY cat food. I know the recall is only for the wet but i wonder if i am the only cat pet owner whos cat died after eating dry from the same problems the other cats and dogs died from.

my perfectly healthy indoor cat of 31/2 years died suddenly of kidney failure . I feed special kitty food and I am sick over the fact that might have been what killed him. It was a horrible death he endured

Linda, I am so sorry! Most of the food on the market isn't fit for our pets to be eating. It is a real challange to find a product that is affordable and a quality pet food. What happened to being able to trust in the name of the product? Be very careful about the pet food contents...read the label!

I think it is time to start feeding our babies some of the organic stuff on the market. More expensive, yes, but so what. ALso, there are places that makes homemade dog/cat meals too!

I think there should be a massive class action lawsuit.

Dogs and cats are family members and we cannot allow

this type of oversight from the providers of our pet food.

Our cat died last week after eating what we think was Whiskas, not on the recall list. We were out of town, came home, fed the cat the wet Whiskas, and it was dead the next morning, having vomited blood. We had to go out of town that night and didn't hear about the recall until the next day. Could be coincidence. Cat was playing and happy we were home, got her special snack, then she was dead within hours.

We called and left orders not to feed the other cat (or dogs) any of the wet food. We shall see what brand it was on our return.

jd  says:

I know that Meow Mix is listed as safe. But this past week my cat has vomitted 3 times, this is the first time since I have had him that he has ever thrown up his food. He seems ok otherwise, but I am stopping it none the less!

Jill  says:

My cat has been throwing up and had diarea off and on. We feed her fancy feast which is suppose to be safe and dry food. I am stopping the Fancy Feast.

I am sick!! We feed Fancy Feast and Friskies, but also give our two cats Special Kitty pouches. The last 3 weeks they have acted and eaten normally, but are taking on more water than usual. We thought with spring here and them shedding that that was why they are drinking more. I will call our vet immediately.

I have been feeding my cat Buddy canned Friskies cat food. Is it safe.He doesn'tseem to be sick and I have switched to Nine lives because you call the 800 number and a recording say they are not involved with any of the pet food recalls.

Sorry didn't know how this works. I have two young cats under 5 months. I had almost exclusively fed them Sophisticat from the time I got them in early January. I switched to Newmans. I only started buying Fancy Feast Elegance Medley. I have bought pet promise and wellness. I really hate to start them on regular home cooked food because I have done that with all my other pets and then they refuse to eat canned foods again. it is very difficult when you have to have someone else take care of them when you are on vacation etc. and I am not sure they get the right vitamins either. Newmans is supposed to be organic and natural. Does anyone know about that brand? I have noted my youngest drinking a lot of water and they urinate a lot as well. They are eating well and act ok. I don't know what to do now.

Nancy  says:

I feed my dogs and cats Natural balance, Wellness and Innova canned food. The dogs eat Innova dry. They definitely eat better than me.

My holistic vet recommends that cats shouldn't even be eating dry food. Since cats are originally from the desert, they would get water from their prey. Of course I always leave clean filtered water out anyway. She did say if I insisted on giving any type of dry food to the cats that it should be Evo because of it's minimal amounts of grains.

Lisa asked about the Special Kitty dry food. My cat ate the dry "Moist" food - it's not in a pouch or a can, but in a bag - maybe about a pound? Anyway my cat is right now near death. We have been working with a vet to try to find out what is wrong with her. She ate it in January and has gone downhill since. She won't eat anything at this time. We were hoping to bring her back. Anybody else use Special Kitty Moist or Dry?

I have two adult cats and five kittens - - they eat the varieties of Meow Mix dry, Seafood, Hairball Control and Original - - is Meow Mix on the recall list?

C  says:

My cat loves Meow Mix Indoor Control (8 yrs. old). She never goes outside. She has thrown up about 6-8 times since I purchased the last bag of food. I'm not saying it is not safe, but when I went home at lunch today and she had gotten sick- I had not heard of any recalls- I told my daughter "It seems she has been sick since we opened these last bag of food". Approx. 2-3 weeks ago. My co-workers told me when I got back to work. Just wanted to let peolpe know what we were feeding our cat and she has been sick. Good luck to all.

I believe that is absolutley unlawfull to withhold information that is killing animals! The newspapers are in colusion with the pet manufacturersby not posting a complete list of the recalled foods. Even this website is clouded in mystery. WHERE IS THE ATTORNEY GENERAL OF THE uNITED STATES AND WHERE IS THE NEWS MEDIA?

Kathi Maxwell  says:

I was also using Special Kitty Dry And Special Kitty canned. I had two cats that died because of this. But what made me more furious. Is special kitty is on the recall list. But when I went into Walmart to get some kitty litter. Special kitty was on the shelf. I asked someone they scanned it and said it wasn't on recall. Isn't this a bunch of garbage? I told them they should pull it. cuz i won't buy it and neither will anyone else that knows about it. I am not using 9 lives Daily Essentials. And feed 9 Lives canned as a treat. 9 Lives is made by Pet Carnation. I am now reading the back of bags and cans.

My 14 year-old cat has very bad teeth. She eats 9 Lives Super Supper canned exclusively. She is fine. My 3 younger cats eat a blend of the Super Supper and Dad's brand dry cat food. They are all doing well. Hope this helps someone find some safe food.

First I want to express condolences to everyone who has lost a pet from a menu foods product. Second I want to thank everyone on this site for possibly helping to save my cat (still waiting to see is she recovers).

2 days ago I came to this site looking for answers, I found lots of testimonials about sick and dying pets. I called my wife and told her it’s worse than we thought and to take the cat to the Vet. immediately. He was suspect because of the symptoms (listless, drinking and peeing a lot) so he pulled blood work. The blood work showed some kidney damage (by the enzymes the kidneys were spilling into the blood). He said that typically these enzymes don’t show up until about 75% kidney failure has occurred, so he anticipated Felix (my cat) had suffered at least that much damage. He also said that there are 2 types of kidney damage chronic (happens over many years and isn’t reversible) and acute (from a toxic insult) there has been some success in reversing some of the damage of the acute type if it is treated soon enough). If you think you dog or cat is not behaving normally take it to your vet and have a blood panel run! If your vet doesn’t take you seriously enough take you pet to another vet! This poising epidemic is much more wide spread than the news has been letting on, thousands of animals may die from this before they know why.Stop feeding the pet food immediately!Freeze the open pouches or cans and hold onto the unopened food! (don’t throw away the evidence).Veterinarians and the FDA are collecting samples of food their affected patients were eating. Last word of advice, don’t be angry at Wal-Mart, Eukanuba, Iams etc. none of them whished or wanted something like this to happen. Menu Foods is another story, we can be angry with them!

Now after I lost my 12 year old cat, and seeing all the crookedness thats going on here, personally I think that if you REALLY love your pet, cook its food from the same things we see fit to eat. My uncle had a cat that recently died at the age of 22. He would feed it ham, and other meats and "human" food that he would cook for his family and the cat lived twice as long as mine did when mine was on a "cat" food diet. It proves to me that 2 cats living in the same environment with different diets have different live spans. You may wonder about other aspects of the situations, like physical activity, my cat was very slim and muscular, and my uncles was lazy and slightly overweight. However it proves that cat foods cant be completely trusted as people blinded to believe. Would you feed your kids a generic food every day for its life? Seriously.

My names Rebecca Prado from So. Cal. and my roommate and I just took in our 7month old cat who was diagnosed with beginning stages of kidney failure..he is in the pet hospital for a few days with I.V.'s attached to him. His vet said it was due to the IAMS/SCIENCE DIET foods that he's been eating for the past several months. We are looking to file a lawsuit as well. For their sake, there is nothing wrong with our cat, either way im sure, there will be justice served for all that has been affected by this neglegence.

Nothing happened to our cats after having special kitty. But now i'm afraid that our cat could be having an after -effect. Starting today our cat's neck and face looked a little bit swolen. He also seemed to be a little agited with us. This isn't normal for him because he is usually so sweet. Also, when we pick him up, he whines, as if it's hurting him. Lastly, His urine smells stronger than normal. Is it normal for his face and neck to look a little bit bigger than before? Is it okay for him to be aigtated like this? Is normal for him to be hurting like this? And, Should his urine smell like this?

Im so sorry to hear about everyones tragedy. I am beside myself as to what to think. I have been feeding special kitty canned food for the last several weeks (UPC code02000 00124) that we purchased at Walmart in Oberlin Ohio on Feb. 18, 2007. We recently had a cat that had to be put down after eating some and she went down hill fast!! She was older and had been doing well, we now suspect that food. But Im not finding anywhere that the 13 oz can has been recalled. Anyone know? thanks and again Im so sorry for your losses

My Cat Died on Febuary 8th of kidney failure. I fed her Iams Dry Food Less Active Formula. I also wonder if this could be related to the recall even though it isn't one of the pet foods on the list. I had recently purchased a new bag of food and my cat was vomiting soon after. I threw away all the food after she died and do not have it to be tested. Does anyone else have a sick cat or a cat that passed away after eating this type of food?

My Cat was near death several years ago due to an accidental poisoning. After almost 3 weeks in hospital, and being near death on many occasions, with total kidney failure and an auto immune response, he was saved by a quick thinking vet that administered cortisone as he was on deaths door. This treatment saved his life. Slowly but surely he fully recovered. The vet at that time informed me that it was a rather unconventional treatment (none of the other vets suggested it even) but for poisonong it just may help him recover. If you have a sick pet due to kidney failure from poisoning PLEASE inquire about cortisone shots for your pet. If cost isn't an issue, there are always blood transfusions as well.

My 12 year old cat that i had since i was 6 died last month of kidney failure. she was in so much pain. she had diarrea, she drank so much water, more than normal, she never left the water bowl. and she wasn't hungry at all. if your cat have some of this symptoms take him/her to the vet. no more cats deserve to die. My cat was so healty, so strong and full of energy and suddenly she went down. I've never seen her so weak and so sick before, so it hurted a lot seeing her like that. the last minutes she was alive she was crying in pain. I have a dog also, and im so happy that she doesn't like the dry food, but now im afraid of feeding her, i decided to make her food myself, im not taking the risk of feeding her with something that would kill her.

Lucy, my oldest kitty 15 yrs old <have 2> was so toxic last week I bawled all week. Called the vet I take them to and the vet tech said, oh you want to put her down? I said NO! As a former vet tech, had already gone thru idney failure with one kitty. Giving her IV's at home was so hard. My oldest kitty was walking in circles and so disoriented. She had bloody diarhea 2 weeks ago. All she ate was whiskas canned. She stopped eating and I ended up opening a can of people stew. Mashed it up and she ate and drank like crazy. I also have been forcing water with an eyedropper. Had read Diamond was okay on here, but The deaths and illnesses sparked an FDA investigation into the pet food made by the Diamond Pet Food Co. at its, manufacturing plant Gaston, South Carolina. The FDA said 23 animal deaths have been linked to the pet food so far. :-(( Kitty is so hungry for real food. Now Diamond is out of the question. TY for posting the lawyers phone number. I have called and emailed so much warning people about CANNED whiskas. Now my other kitty is getting lethargic and she eats Kit n Kaboodles made by Purina. :-(( Wonder how much of the rat poison aminopterin is in our food?

Below is some more information:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/12/31/earlysho FDA says some of the recalled product was exported to at least 29 countries including several in the European Union. The FDA says those countries have been notified. The deaths and illnesses sparked an FDA investigation into the pet food made by the Diamond Pet Food Co. at its, manufacturing plant Gaston, South Carolina. The FDA said 23 animal deaths have been linked to the pet food so far.

<the above is so false. 100's of animals have died, sickened.>

The company, based in Missouri, issued a recall of 19 varieties of dog and cat food on Dec. 21 because some of the pet food made at the Gaston plant was discovered to have contained aflatoxin.Aflatoxin, a naturally occurring chemical that comes from a fungus sometimes found on corn and other crops, can cause severe liver damage. Had wanted to tell all I am praying for them and our kids <pets> 2 years ago had to put my 25 year old kitty to sleep. Kidney failure. And saw that there had been a recall of cat food. Afloxtoxins are in corn and rice. Thus dry pet food. And the FDA allows a % in human food. Roger, I have seen kitties live to be 30. Am praying my kitty makes it. This is all so ridiculous. :-(~~

I have a 14 year old cat ..she doesn't even act as if she is 14.. she is the most energetic, vivacous cat... she has had no problems.. I feed her the Special Kitty pouch twice a day... she has ate this for more than 4 years.. w/in the week she became so ill & weak.. I took her to the Vet Saturday, March 24.. I recieved the test results Sunday .. she has kidney failure & due to her age she really has no chance. I check this site w/a pouch of Special Kitty I had left & found the recall number in my hand. I am so devasted to know that by my hands I took something I love & that was a part of our family away.. I have never seen an animal decline so quickly .. as I said this cat was 14 but never had I seen her act that age.. we are making her comfortable.. & if she goes much longer.. we will do the best thing for her .. Midnight is her name.. but it isn't just a name to me.. she is a part of the family.. good luck to alll of you..

This is to Marcy and all others with cats with kidney failure. My cat is now 17 but a year ago it seemed certain she would have to be put down because of kidney failure. We brought her home over a weekend with the likelihood she'd be put down on Monday. Since she wouldn't eat, I force-fed her KD and gave her 250cc of fluids every day in addition to medications prescribed by the vet. Slowly, she started eating on her own, and after a month or so, I discontinued the force feeding. Granted, she doesn't eat what the vets recommend, but she's alive and thriving and that's the big thing. Now she's down to fluids every other day, and every day has one Baytril pill, a half pill of Pepcid and a couple of doses of aluminum hydroxide. My vet calls her a miracle cat. It's all a little costly but well worth it. So kidney failure doesn't automatically have to be an immediate death sentence. Kidney failure is the biggest killer of older cats. I many times wonder if the food they eat over the years contributes to this. If I had a kitten, I'd start it on the natural foods and skip the national brands. But it's tough to get an older cat to change, and the big thing is to make sure it eats if it has kidney problems. Hope this is of some help.

My cat started getting sick about 6 months ago after switching from iams weight control dry food to Inova dry cat food. a week after feeding him; like all the other cases he started vomitting, became lethargic, drinking lots of water and then urinating HUGE clumps and angry (more than usual) The vet said that he is overweight and might be getting early diabettes and to cut his food way down (I think she said 1/3 of the recomended dose) That didnt work in fact made it even worse, I was starving my cat! We now have switched to science diet weight control and give him the recomended serving, He is now OK but not like he was. As a pet owner all these thoughts run through our mind: could it be the new kitten, did he eat a poisonous plant, spider bite? But the one thought that really stood out was the food, and this was way before all this recall stuff came out. And the funny thing is I still have the food in the garage. I am going to call the vet in the morning to see if their is a need for my cat to come back in and get tested.

But it was Dry food????

I know someone who lost a 16-year-old previously-healthy cat to kidney failure 2 weeks ago. Her cat subsisted on Iams dry food and Fancy Feast canned food.

It is a little scary to me that, while manufacturers are stating the product remaining on shelves is not subject to the recall, they don't always explicity state that it is SAFE. The exception is Nutro Max.

My son's 5 year old cat died of kidney failure 2 days ago. He was eating DRY Special Kitty and American's Choice. I know they're saying that only the prescription dry food is contaminated, but it's TOO much of a coincidence for a healthy cat to just happend to die of kidney failure and just HAPPEN to be eating the same brand of cat food. I beleive that before this is all over there will be many more recalls.

My two cats are healthy. But here lately the last 2 weeks they have been vomiting alot. I was feeding them Iams DRY original. I bought it about 3 months ago. They seemed fine. They finished the bag. Then , I decided to try them on Maximum DRY cat food at Wal-Mart. Since I bought it a week ago they have been vomiting everday. My kitten 3 months old seems to have a problem urinating and whining. But not vomiting. Maximum is not on the list but I am beginning to wonder. Does anyone know if it is or not. It is a Wal-Mart brand. I am worried. Today, I fed them some of my deli turkey. They loved it. I also give them plain organic yogert mixed with a teaspoon of turkey baby food. They love it. It also has acidopholus in it which is good for the digestive system. I must say I am worried. Please do not feed your animals anymore dry or canned foods. Feed them what you eat for now or buy them a can of Tuna or salmon that we eat, or baby food. Your pet babies are worth it. I think the poisen was planted. It all seems suspisious to me that almost ALL the pet foods are contaminated one way or another. Accidents don't happen like that. Something is going on. I feel really sad and broken hearted for the people who lost there presious beloved pets. I ache for you. I still worry and I am monitoring my 3 cats. It is scary. Makes you wonder what is in our food to. We need to read labels and be cautious. I am now lerey of every pet food out there..even the so called organic ones. Alternative is the above that I meantioned on the foods. There is also goat yogurt that is good at Ralleys. Just go with your gut instints. If you feel unsure about pet foods don't buy any. Feeding them REAL chicken and turkey and yogurt along with baby foods will not hurt them and may make them healthier. By all means NO treats eirther they may be tainted as well. Avoid foods with animal digest, wheat gluten, fillers, by products, wheat flour, corn, rice. I hope this helps some and my cats seem ok now that I am not feeding them any pet food at all. Also, they things I meantioned above to feed are actually better and cheaper than pet food. Who says our pets have to eat pet food anyway. Be careful our children could be next. READ LABELS. Educated yourselfs on what goes in everyone's mouths these days. It's a real pain and a drag but be safe than sorry.

I am really considering just starting to feed my cats tuna, chicken or deli meats. This is just too scary to think about. They're ok so far, they DID eat some Save a Lot canned stuff, but by the time I heard of the recall I had no more of that so couldn't check the date. This was about a week and a half ago. Now eating fancy feast, have always eaten purina indoor cat chow. No signs of being sick... but sheesh. I'd rather spend a couple extra dollars at the grocery store than have them wind up dying because these people can't monitor what they're dumping into animal food.

I have been using Special Kitty KITTEN Dry for the past few months.About 3 or 4 weeks ago I noticed that a couple of my cats were throwing up. I felt bad as I normally feed them a mixed dry as I depend on the protien Shake I feed for body weight and have instead been feedingthem unmixed Special Kitty Kitten Dry. I thought then I have to get them back on the mixed dry.I breed Persians. I mixed Purina Kitten, Iams Kitten, and Special Kitty Kitten for the higher Protein. I just happened to run out of everything and the cats seemed to like the Specail Kitty dry for KITTENS. I bought it twice more and fed it to them unmixed. I now have Several of my cats throwing up. My beautiful Male just 9 months old is now down to 4.4 pounds from almost 7 pounds. He is incredible and seems to be a bit more alert and hungrey. So far the tests have shown a gritty substance in his lower intestine and his tests didn't show highly abnormal for his Liver or Kidneys. He has been on Clavamox for 10 days due to a cold so we will see how it goes when he is off the meds. I am sick over this and fear that Special Kitty dry will be included in the recall. fearing the worst with Specail Kitty Kitten Dry ". . I am also utilizing friskies wet and have used I ams wet kitten.

Has anybody heard anything about whiskas temptations treats or purine one dry food? My cat has been sick for a while, not with the same symptons, but has finally been diagnosed with feline herpes virus. The vet suggested purina one and she gets the temptations simply because she loves them (she eats, chicken, beef, salmon, and milk flavored). She has not really been acting lethargic, is taking lysine for the herpes symptons. She just had blood tests to rule out leukemia/feline fiv. Her tests came back negative. The vet was concerned because she had a somewhat low white blood count, and her liver enzymes were slightly elevated. Does anybody have any information that might be helpful. This is scary! These companies should pay. On another note, my mom's cat (my childhood cat) has been diagnosed with kidney failure. This was before the recall. She ate all kinds of canned food and is now just wasting away to nothing, although she in hungry all the time. She is eating fancy feast because she can no longer keep any dry food down. It is so sad. Missy is 14 years old and was in excellent health until this!

My two cats started drinking LOTS of water after I started feeding them the FANCY FEAST MEDLEY gourmets in the cans and the FANCY FEAST DRY GOURMET GOLD. One of the dry was a fish mix and the other day was a chicken mix and I threw them out and quit the canned medley GOURMETs too. This was a couple months ago. I suspected high sodium or something wrong with the these new Fancy Feast products AND now I would highly recommend NOT feeding them. A Karen Kirby wrote in this above mine note about noticing the new Fancy Feast Gourmets canned made her cats drink excessively. This should be checked out!

Yesterday while taking our cat to the vet he suffered what appeared to be a seizure and died. I had taken him to the vet the day before and was told he had a kidney infection. He was given a shot and some pills. Then next morning he was worse and could hardly walk and laid in the floor screaming. I called the Vet and was told to bring him in. Unfortunately it was too late for our prescious Bob. He ate Special Kitty dry food. Bob was our little boy.He was only 2 yrs old. He was a very special and unique cat. He would talk to you and as long as you talked he would keep meowing. He was a big boy standing 12" tall and weighed 13 lbs. He was a bobtail hence the name. We are so heartbroken over the loss and not having him around to talk to us and snuggle up at night. I feel that Special Kitty is responsible for his death and should be held responsible. Our animals are like our children. Even our kids refer to them as their brother or sister. They are not just animals they are FAMILY!

my precious kitty died. They won't put whiskas ground food or Hill's a/d on the recall list. Finally thought she should have blood work. Showed he white count was real low. Vet sent me home with Hill;s presciption diet. 2 days later kitty couldn't stand and then started vomitting. As deaf as I am could hear the pulmonary edema. She went into convulsions and died in my arms. :-(~ The canned whiskas says wheat by products. And the Hills a/d has so much stuff in it. They are recalling all this food with gravy whem canned should be included.

Now the FDA says:

According to import records, the wheat gluten was shipped to the United States from Nov. 3, 2006 to Jan. 23 of this year and contained "minimal labeling" to indicate whether it was intended for humans or animals. The vast majority went to pet food manufacturers and distributors, according to the FDA. But some of the processing plants that remain under FDA scrutiny make both human and pet food. My heart breaks for you who have lost your "babies" or that are so sick. I pray that as many as possible will survive. Up above I read where one poster had lost her kitty from eating IAMs low fat dry food. I have a bag of Iams "House Cat" dry food, but the bag color is almost identical to the low fat food - is it the same thing? It scares me that I was lucky once but won't be again. My one cat was prescribed Hills Prescription M/D dry food, but all three of my cats ate it. The vet said that since they were all 7 years old, it wouldn't hurt them. I almost had a heart attack when I saw that very food on the recall list! I called the vet who said Hills was paying for the testing of kidney function of cats that had eaten it. I pulled my husband out of work and we crammed three terrified cats in their carriers and went to the vet. Thank God they were fine and of course, the vet had pulled all her stock. I was lucky - many poor people were not so lucky. ***Tears*** I thought I'd try Whiskas but I see someone else's' pets were sick on it, so those cans stay on the shelf unopened. I will continue with the Purina Friskies canned cat food, as I haven't heard anything about it (yet, anyway), and use the IAMS House Cat dry food (hoping it's different than "low fat") and the Hills Science K/D prescription food now. (My original ill kitty didn't have diabetes, so my vet switchd him to L/D because of high liver enzymes. He had tested high for both the liver enzymes and high glucose-which was normal in subsequent tests.) I hope Menu Foods is so buried in lawsuits, it will be decades before the lawyers are through with them! And why'd they do it? The usual reason - greed! And think of all the suffering and pain they caused the animals (dogs too!) and their grieving owners. Just one last thing... Those of you who lost your kitties, please don't blame yourselves or "beat yourself up" because you fed your cat the poisoned food. You couldn't help it - you trusted the pet food manufacturer as I'm sure they trusted their suppliers. Menu Foods is the villain here! And their day will come!

I just heard on the news today that Fish Meal from Canada contains the Melamine. Which probably means we will hear the fish meal from China too! This keeps getting bigger and bigger. Plus, human food, flour along with chicken and pork. What else is affected, only time will tell. They say say humans are not at risk, yea right, wait until somebody gets sick. Plus what about the people who are cooking for thier pets? This Fish meal is usually used in cat food. This could explain the products making our cats sick that are not on the recall list, (yet.)

Sherry or anyone--concerning fish meal from Canada. Who is puchasing this stuff? Is it coming from Menu Foods or someone else--Where did you hear this report so we can follow up. Fish meal is also used in some dog foods. As I look for alternative food for my dog and cat--the more concerned I get that feed for animals used for human and pet foods may be more involved then we have realized. The notion that a little bit of poison will not hurt us is not a comfort. Now I feel I must learn how long toxins stay in our systems and pets and if it accumulates in a body. Everyday I hope for better news--but it seems it isn't over yet. Does anyone know if Bison eats any feed that could be tainted?

The fish information is all over the web. No one really knows how far the fish got before it was figured out that the fish people were feeding the tainted product to fatten fish.

I keep hoping for better news. At least someone has taken a stand and demands changes across the board. Go Cathy MacIvor! She's the lawyer handling the Class Action Suite against how pet food is made.

For River, Who knows what animals are affected it would all depend on what they are feeding them. We farm and most farms like us use our own raised corn, oats, wheat, hay mixed with a supplement. There are so many differnent animal feeds and supplements available. Your best bet would be buy locally if you can or investigate as thoroughly as you know how to. As far as Toxins..another story. Toxins are the root to all evil in humans and pets. I could write a book on the dangers of toxins, from exhaust fumes from cars, airplanes to the box of hamburger helper in the store. Homogenized milk is also very dangerous for us. Flouride is also terrible. This is all what the FDA wants for us is to stay sick so that we can have our syptoms treated with pharmacutials so more money can be made. Every time there is a cure the FDA stabs it. The FDA also will not recognize holistic cures or doctors because there is no revenue for them. Other countries have cures for herpes, cancer, aids, diabetes, the list goes on. A good book to buy would be NATURAL CURES "THEY" DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT BY KEVIN TRUDEAU. I am organic/holistic and I spend alot of time reading and learning how to stay toxin free..as much as possible. Kevin Trudeau talks alot about the FDA and what he has to say will make your blood run cold. To me he makes perfect sense and it all ties in with the poison in our pet's food and ours. It is litterally sickening.

Susan, I am sorry but I think that I scared everybody away with my very "emotional" thoughts in the above comment space :(

Sherry,

You didn't scare everyone away! They are probably just busy, as I have been. More pet food recalled today, you know?

A Message to Everyone,

Oh, don't forget that June 17 - June 23 is the National Pet Food Boycott. Too many pets have died due to these pet foods and we are standing up to the pet food producers. Feed a jar of baby food if you don't have time to cook. That should hold you over until the boycott has passed.

I boycotted months ago when I started feeding Flint River. But I will pass the word to others. What else was recalled? I just read Itchmo, I didn't see any specific product? Did I miss it? I have been busy working on a Blog. Let me know.

Sherry,

You are a wise consumer. Buying and feeding a quality pet food such as Flint River is one of the best ways to boycott the folks who produce bad foods. You go girl!

Oh, the recall was for dog food. Crappy Ol' Roy. You are safe, again, since you are feeding Flint River.

I WOULD LIKE TO RECIEVE AN UPDATED LIST OF CAT RECALL FOODS AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF WHISKAS POUCHES IS ON THAT LIST AND WHO IS THE MANAFACTURER. THANKS

Bob  says:

Melisa, Whiskas has Wheat Gluten in it. Until everything is sorted out it's best to find a food that doesn't use this stuff! Not even rice or corn gluten. Good luck with your pets.

Melissa,

This is an updated list of the recalled products. Whiskas didn't make the recall but is listed in the Class Action for all the deaths and illness it has caused. The maker of Whiskas is Mars.

My cat just died from acute kidney failure the vet says for a cat of only 1 1/2 years to have such extreme kidney failure to check into the food recall. When I checked Special Kitty pouches was on the list. The dates do not match up but there is no doubt that was the cause of it. No money in the world will make it worth my Midnite's life but something needs to be done so the makers will stop killing our cats. My question is how do I file a claim?

You made some excellent points in that last post on the subject. I find this a really interesting yet sometimes difficult to understand subject. Another guy writes really well on the matter, can’t remember his name at the moment though.

Hi Susan - three questions:

Is there any information re: which manufacturers (Menu Foods, American Nutrition, Diamond, etc) are still using imported grain-based ingredients from China? Or, rather, are their suppliers such as Chem-Nutra and Wilbur-Ellis still importing grain products from Asia, Turkey, etc? (regardless of new QA/QC measures)

Is there a way to find out which cat food companies (those who make their own) are using ONLY domestically-produced ingredients (except for lamb)? The only one I know of, is Merrick, and possibly Wellness.

Thanks! Deb

Here's the 3rd question (different topic):

My beloved cat, Evie, was diagnosed with CRF this week. She is on IV fluids for 6 days... I'm devastated... trying to mobilize & get up to speed on what I'll need to know to manage her disease... steep learning curve.

Anyway, a low phosphorus. low sodium, low acid (opposite of urinary support - cranberries, etc. not good for renal support) canned food is critical for kidney support. Phosphorus binders can be used to offset higher phosphorus, but we can't compensate for high sodium and acid. For obvious reasons, I don't want to use the special diets from Hills, Eukanuba, etc.

The only one I've been able to find any data on, is Wysong. Their "au jus" 95% meat styles have less than 0.07 phosphorus, but they don't have any vitamin or mineral supplements, so they can't be used for a "complete" diet.

The info was given to me verbally by one of the buyers at Mud Bay Pet ( http://www.mudbay.us/ ), a local, family-owned pet food store here in Olympia, WA, that is strongly committed to screening and monitoring all their food suppliers. They personally visit every company's manufacturing plant annually, monitor the FDA via RSS feed, etc. But he didn't have the other data I need, and didn't have it for the other brands they carry. Any info or referrrals would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Deb

Deb,

I believe most foods are being purchased outside of China. A great site to answer your questions might be The Pet Food List http://www.thepetfoodlist.com/petfoods_pg1.htm

Deb,

I have found a lot of helpful information at this site. http://www.petfooddirect.com/store/petproducts.asp

In the "search for" type in the brand name. You can sort the information by selecting "cat dry" or "cat wet" after the results of the search have been listed. This is a fast way to look through some of the brands then for more extensive information look through the company's web site. You may also like to look at PetSmart's web site for this same type of information. PetSmart provides pretty good product information (as much as the company will provide to PetSmart).

Thanks Susan! I've searched through both ThePetFoodList and PetFoodDirect and they have alot of good information. Haven't been able to find the specific nutrient levels of concern for CRF so I'm going to try contacting the companies directly. Thanks again, Deb

My cat is vomiting almost every day after talking to my Mom, I believe there is something wrong with Purina food. Anybody got further info on that.

Lin  says:

My cats have eaten Purina Frikies dry cat food for a long time but the last bag I bought must've had something wrong with it, none of my cats would touch it. Even the strays in my neighborhood wouldn't eat it, even though they were obviously very hungry. I got different food and they all ate like they were starving. Is there a problem with the Friskies?

Lori  says:

My persian cats both eat Friskies Selects (indoor) canned food and Iams Proactive Health Hairball Formula.

They have ate both without any problems for the last three years since we rescued them.

Our vet says they are both in excellent health and much improved from the sick, emaciated cats they once were. He said the food we have them on has returned them to prime health.

They both are alert , ideal weight and shiny coats. I asked my vet if we should switch to a "raw" food diet or an "organic" diet after the recalls, and he said that I should save my money.

The "raw" diets can be dangerous because of botulism and you have to worry about your cat transmitting food bourne diseases to you.

Plus "raw" food diets are very expensive. So , I asked about "organic'. He said that it is not any better for your cat than any other because their is no guarantee that is what you are really getting, since a product can be marked "organic" but legally not have to fully be "organic' by pet food laws as long as one ingrediant is "organic".

So, you are just paying for a designer pet food that may not be as good as Purina. I tried my cats on Wellness "organic".

They refused to eat it. Turns out that was a good thing since Wellness was on a recall list as well as many holistic brands because amoung other things , since they lack presevatives and animals died from botulism, amoung other causes related to these products. So, my cats knew what was best after all.

Do you know if Whiskas international and Friskies( by Purina Switzerland) cat foods are contaminated or pure as they claim. I do not see them on your lists (safe or recall) but are two brands also sold in South Africa.

My apologies as I did not read the previous mailings but after posting my comment saw that Purina is being discussed. I would still like to know about the contents of their food.
