Pet Food Recall - Dog Food Updated 04/28/08
72Dog Food Recalls - Dog Food Recall List
Words to know about the Pet Food Recall:
- Wheat Gluten = The left over stuff when wheat flour is milled until the wheat starch is gone and only the wheat's gluten is left.
- Rice Protein Concentrate = A cheap high-protein ingredient.
- Melamine = A chemical used in fertilizers and plastics.
- Cross-Contamination = Products which were contaminated have been put back into the rendering process to be used in additional pet foods.
What Wal-Mart is doing about the Pet Food Recall
(as reported by WSFA 12 News)
We introduced you to Sheri McComber Wednesday. She says four of her cats got sick after eating Special Kitty brand cat food. She checked the labels on the food and found they were listed on the product recall. She said, "This was done on purpose."
We found dozens of the pouches just like the one's McComber had at the Clanton Wal-Mart. At first glance, the product code checks out as safe. If you peel it off, you'll find another product code. I compared those numbers to the ones on the recall list on the FDA'S Web site. Sure enough, it's on the list. With the stickers over the product code, the items went through. However, I left one on the stickers off. When the cashier scanned the label on the package, it said do not sell and she would not let me purchase it.
We put in several calls to Menu Foods and Wal-Mart pressing the issue: Why would they cover the old labels with new ones? Wal-Mart issued statement. It reads: "We have worked with our supplier to investigate the concerns raised by WSFA 12 News. Menu Foods, the manufacturer of Special Kitty products, assures us that the products currently available in Wal-Mart stores are, indeed, safe."
During our phone conversation, a spokeswoman for Wal-Mart says the problem is with the packaging, not the prouduct. As to the problem with the packaging, Wal-Mart said we would have to ask Menu Foods about that. So far, we have been unable to get a comment from Menu Foods. The question still remains why would it cover the original labels. You can count on WSFA 12 News to continue to follow this story until we get answers.

Dog Food Safe To Feed After The Dog Food Recall
My Pug has been drinking more water than usual and urinating constantly. Could this be caused by the Ol'Roy wet dog food? He has vomited twice in the last few weeks but not in the last few days.
Yeah all, I work for a corporate petstore and right now it only effects "some can" and "pouched" foods. don't worry about the dry which it what you should be feeding your animals anyway and not canned. After reading todays Orlando Sentinial it appears that the corn gluton meal that was used by one supplier was bad.
this is a reply to the following: Comment by Joan B. Hudson -- My Pug has been drinking more water than usual and urinating constantly. Could this be caused by the Ol'Roy wet dog food? He has vomited twice in the last few weeks but not in the last few days.
ANSWER: YES IT COULD. This is one of the symptoms that was listed on the Boston Channel 7 News. I'd bring your dog to the vet ASAP to make sure.
My Rottie/Lab mix has been vomiting since eating from this latest bag of Beneful dog food. Is it possible that Beneful is affected too and just hasn't made "the list" yet? Any help would be great!
This is for JOAN HUDSON. You probably should have your dog checked out by a veterinarian. Our Yorkie was experiencing the same symptoms and after having him tested we found out he was DIEBETIC.
MY DOG HAD A LOT OF VOMITING LAST WEEK. THE CANNED DOG FOOD HE EATS IS NOT ON THE AFFECTED LIST BUT THERE IS A QUESTION ABOUT BENEFUL WHICH HE ALSO EATS AND SINCE HE GOT SICK HE'S STAYING AWAY FROM. HE'S BEING TREATED AT THIS TIME. SINCE BENEFUL IS BEING QUESTIONED TOO I'VE REMOVED THAT FROM HIS DIET.
I JUST GOT MY DOG CODY, WHO IS A NORWEGIAN ELKHOUND. HE HAS BEEN EATING EAGLE PACK HOLISTIC SELECT SINCE HE WAS OLD ENOUGH TO EAT DRY FOOD, AND HIS PARENTS DID ALSO. IT IS A FANTASTIC FOOD, AND I COULDN'T BELIEVE HOW SOFT AND SHINY HIS COAT WAS. IT'S A LITTLE PRICY, BUT WELL WORTH IT. EAGLE PACK IS NO WHERE ON THE RECALL LIST, SO IF YOUR PET IS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THEIR CURRENT FOOD, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND EAGLE PACK.

This is regarding Fred Luhn's comments - I just saw a commercial for Beneful dry dog food, so I doubt this is on the list. IF it is, it is terribly irresponsible!

Please confirm that this recall does not affect Nutro Dry Food for sensitive stomachs - lamb and rice? The fact that they still haven't completed the recall list is so unsettling. I have pulled it from her diet already, but considering that this was supposed to be "one of the best", I don't know what to feed her now. I initially didn't trust any dog food until discovering Nutro ... now what?
i've been using LIF'S ABUNDANCE on my 4 dogs n cat. an all natural food , look it up . it,s great!! also it is'nt on the recall list.
Nutro IS on the recall list. I'm not trusting anything with uncalled for grains listed (fillers) in the product information!
is the food mighty dog canned soft food affected
Isn't this so ridiculous? When I adopted my puppy, I insisted on buying holistic, expensive food for her (since the main product in most grocery store brands is "chicken bi-product”: meaning ground up beaks and feet). Everyone said I was too overprotective. Now the grocery store brands are killing our pets. Consumers should demand that pet food manufacturers put decent ingredients into their foods.
I think this is going to far of what some folks will do , next it will be telling us people that nothing
is safe to eat .
Does anyone know if the dog food Maximum Nutrition, which is made by the Walmart comany, Is safe? Walmart makes special kitty too. Thanks
Until this is cleared up I will go back to good quality leftovers for my dogs, and also cooking for them with meat, rice, and vegetables. There are a lot of relatively inexpensive sorts of meat, which mixed with rice or other vegetables, is very nutritious for dogs. This will probably be somewhat more expensive than what I have been used to buying, but I think it will keep my dogs safe, and, chances are, they will like it more!
I just lost my loving Deana two weeks ago...I even said to my husband, can you imagine if had something to do with the cat food I was buying from Walmart???? This is crazy!! Now what??? What am I supposed to tell my daughter? Sorry hony, Deana died because I bought her the bad cat food! What are we supposed to do if are pet has already died??
I'm no DVM, but I'd BET they find the problem in DRY foods soon! It was mentioned that "corn glutton meal" COULD be the problem. It's basically in ALL forms of pet foods. My daughter's dog has all the symptoms-never had wet foods or "pouched foods.(?) I'd feed my pet cooked lean ground beef and rice for the next few weeks.
I feed my dogs NaturaPets - California Natural Lamb & Rice. Does anyone know if this food is recalled?
My family is so devasted. Our dog "Big Pup" became sick about 5 weeks ago. We took her to the vet and felt ashamed because we had tried A homepathic way to heal her. She came down very suddenly with vomiting and diaherra. I fixed her chicken and rice myself for a few days. She seemed to be improving. We decided to take her to the vet becaus she got sick after starting her back on her dog food. She smelled bad, even though we bathed her. This didn't help because she couldn't control her bowels. The vet put her on 2 meds and said "give her some good dog food". So i went and bought 40.00 worth of "The best".We cried all night Sunday waiting for our vet to open Monday morning. She is worse. I prayed, and cried and our vet was out today. So another day! Then I find out about the Dog Food recall. I am horrified because all her foods are on there. We have to see the vet when he opens at 7:30. I can't sleep because in my heart I know it is to late for her. Why is the FDA making so little of this? I have not seen them speak! My heart is broken, my family has had our special friend for 11 years and she was fine.....Just suddenly deathly ill. The vet thought it was Imflammatory bowel disease, that's what we treated her for. Tonight I got her to eat my chiken and rice. She lays on her todler bed with "Her 2 cats" who are now sick as well. I see there food is on the list too......Big Pup is a Flat Haired Retriver, there will never be another like her!Aren't any politicians having their hearts broken as well? Why doesn't someone SPEAK OUT? Scared and Sad in NC...
I am so afraid for my 2 dogs. I have not seen Ceaser Gourmet Food on the recall list. They ate that Fri. eve. Have they found if Beneful is safe or not. That is their main food. I wonder when someone is going to address our concerns. Do they not understand that our pets are members of our familys? They do when they are trying to sell their food.
My dog eats pedigree dry food and has been drinking more water and urinating more, but i don't see pedigree on the list. Any one else with symptoms from pedigree?
Is anything safe for them my Sammie eats nutro natural choice/ lamb and rice small kibble. I was giving him the combo of wet and dry but stopped when I heard the recall they said -Dry was Safe But I' m still nerveous about it all. My little guy is only 6 lbs. and I know bad food would hurt him quik!! Can anyone make me feel a little relief.
Seems sometime that our harts are taken advantage of by corperate greed! Our pets are in manyways our childern and in some way we become closer to our pet then the people in our lives, these people should be held accountable and my hope is they are run out of the country on a rail and hopefully shot for what they have inflected on our friends! let none of us let them get away with this! eye for and eye I say!
when my cat died ..I was upset that no one worned us about anything ...does that mean we're next. how safe are we on food. I have alot of relitives sick with stomach bacteria .. doc. can't seem to be able to treat..whats going on?????
my dear cat died after I went to the vet and $500. latter he died. makes me angry that no one could worned us about anything...somethings wrong somewheres.
I was looking for the "recall list" for poisoned pet food. if it is on your site, I couldn't find it. I think your site is formatted too small I couldn't find anything useful.
if everyone would just stop feeding these horrible brands none of this would happen. i have been feeding my dogs Canidae for years now then one day we thought it was just getting too expensive so we switched a month later two of my dogs had such horrible ear infections that one of them almost had to have surgery to remove the ear drum. well i switched back to CANIDAE and they are 100% better. so think next time you buy the store bought foods. you would die if you knew what was in it. just go to canidae .com if you love your animals
Luckily, I do not feed my pets anything on the recall list, but it is making me re-think about what I am feeding my dear ones. I have two indoor cats and a 8-month puppy. What kind of protein, fiber, etc should they be getting? Also, what ingredients should we steer clear of? I recently heard about Blue Buffalo, www.bluebuff.com, is this really superior to say, Purina?
Look up Premium pet foods online.. If you are on this website.. some are listed. get off the general store bought foods. Even without recalls, this stuff is killing your pets. Pet Supermarket has Wellness & Merrick - 2 good premium foods. Whole foods has several, including Wysong & Paul Newman's. If its not good enough for you to eat, its not good enough for you dog or cat if you love them. There are dozens of Premium Brands to choose from... and you won't find them @ Walmart.
we were feeding my dog wet eukanuba pouches mixed with dry up until january. he was constantly getting sick, vomitting, loose stool, and shaking his head (it seemed like his ears were bothering him). we kept switching the treats we would give him, the flavors of food, everything, accept the brand because we were told by our original vet that that was the best. we figured he had food allergies, which we still believe was probably the case. anyway our new vet recommended that we change to solid gold, holistique blendz. he's been fine ever since, and now i'm so glad we changed!
The FDA is asking those with sick or dead pets to call FDA state complaint coordinators. A list of contacts for such coordinators is available at http://www.fda.gov/opacom/backgrounders/complain.h
Good luck and God Bless all the pet owners. We should all be watching what our friends (pets) eat now and always. I have 3 cats and thank God we are all good here. But if one of them was ill it would be a noticable as me or my wife. We are a close knit family here. Just to mention also, Animalplanet.com has lots of great tips for all types of family friends. BE WELL!!!
My cats eat Iams dry food-lamb and rice. Is it corn meal that's affected or just corn glutton meal? They've been on Iams since they were just kittens, so if there's anything I don't know already about the recall, it would be much aprectiated if I knew what to do with the food situation.
in response to #38, I wouldn't feed any animals any brand that is on the recall list, just because it might not be the exact food that is on the recall, they still make the food with the same ingredients. No dout that the dry food will be on the recall as well.
Does anyone know if purina moist and meaty has been recalled. Thats what i feed my dog.
I think some dry purina food is also contaminated. My puppy started drinking a lot of water lately, ad this morning we found her to be dead, and we couldn't for the life of us find out what was wrong. I think it might be due to the contamination of the dog food.
Susan.. I feed my dog a mix of Medi-Cal Sr Weight control (dry) with a mix of Dick Van Patten's NATURAL BALANCE (wet). I cannot find this brand on the list of recalls. Should I continue to use the wet food? Also, have been using Hills Science Diet (can) Savory Chicken..... anything about these? Thank you for your site... it is ++ helpful...
Science diet is on the Recall list. You should be fine with the other two.
I did wrote a hour ago, but maybe not clear enough . I got a bag Nutro Natureal Choice for seniors fry food yesterday still unopen and is that still safe?Vet told me also that one bag for dental care supposed to be good?
mostly i got from Traders Joe holistic natural dogfood . Do you think ,would have been easier if we all cook chicken with brown rice ourself and add some veggies for our pet's??
my dog love eat raw carrots and is 15 years old now, still I try keep her alive as long she can stay healthy .
Thanks Gerda

You can't beat home made!
true ask susun i do that it feels safe since you know what goes in it
My dog eats Innova or at times she will be switched to Solid Gold. I talked with the owner of Solid Gold and talked with other breeders that were feeding their dogs a higher quality of food. I have found that my early concern about what they put in dog food was not paranoia at all after all these pets have died. These two brands are completely safe to use and are a thousand times more healthy than Science Diet or any Purina Brand. My advice would be to buy pet food at a pet store and listen to people that raise pets (not vets or store clerks).
i feed my yorkie royal canin dry and merrick canned and my 3 cats royal canin for indoor cats and merrick canned. i do not see recalls on this food. but i did a google search on merrick recalls and alot of things came up. thereare alot of people who are not so happy with merrick, food is different each time.
does anyone have a yorkie that they make there own food for ?
any good recipes out there?
this is so terrible that people are losing there beloved pets like this. i am so scared.
For comment #3 above. My dog did the same thing with attempting to urinate frequently even when none would come out and vomiting. She did this about 4 to 5 months ago, and I had given her some of the Nutro Natural Choice. She pulled out of it though. I wonder if it was the dog food at that time too. The vet put her on ID dog food which is prescription and she got better in three or four days. Wonder how long this has been going on with the dog food. I feel lucky.
For guidelines in making your own dog food I found great information on the following sites:
Whole Dogs
and also B Naturals (it might be B-Naturals)
Terry
Options from Terry (Bootsie and Ida's Mom):
Sorry for the lack of detail in the last post. Here are the actual sites I'm referring to for making your own food:
http://b-naturals.com/May2006.php The B naturals site offers both home cooked and raw food plans.
Please note that Diamond Pet Foods are NOT involved in the Menu Foods Recall. The accurate list of pet foods involved is listed on the Menu Foods recall information site, and does not include Diamond:
www.menufoods.com/recall
Corn gluten seems to be in many pet foods. We need recipes for good homemade foods for our pets. I am horrified that Menu did not issue a warning earlier. They take our money, they better be sure the food is safe. Our pets are very important to us. This is a major tragedy. I feed Special Kitty dry and one of my cats has been acting very strange for a month now. They all drink a lot of water. I will be cooking for them until this fiasco is settled. I don't know why the Govt. is not involved in inspecting and setting standards for pet food. What would happen if a child got into some of the wet pet food (lets face some kids will put anything in their mouths as they are just kids!).
is pedigree on the list, that's what i'm feeding my yorkie and basset hound?
Links for recalls and pet food recipies http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/petfood.htm
Pedigree is safe
Dear Joan, #3, I would not waist any time. Get your dog to the vet. Doesn't sound right. *better to be safe than sorry. Patricia
i learned that pet foods shoul not have corn, wheat or soy. bha or bht . if the first ingredent is meat by products{heads feet feathers etc.} or bone meal{ diseased dead animals. road kill. and such.
i looked at my friskies cat food it too has corn wheat and soy.
so does pedigree list meat by products 2nd ingredent.
read the lables.
oh boy my pets better get used to my cooking.
It was RAT POISON!!! Now how do they knwo what to recall?>
About two weeks ago my Bichon was urinating and drinking constantly. Lethargic and vomiting. He only eats Cesar pack os moist food. I wonder if the investigation is thouough enough since Cesar is not on the list. He also had elevated liver enzymes which is present in rat poisoning. I dont know what I should do, he is doing better but this all seems suspicious to me. Any answers?
What Pedigree pet food is recalled? Canned? Pouch? dry???
I WAS USEING CESAR DOG FOOD AND I CHANGED TO MIGHTY DOG THEN THAY WAS THOWING UP THEN BLEEDINGFROM THE RECKTOM BORING OUT. I SAVED THEM IN TIME.SO BE CARFUL AND PAY CLOSE ENION WHEN THAY GO PODDY. YES I WELL BUY THIS PRODUCT AFTER THE RECALL IS OVER.
Our cat had to be euthanized in Jan. due to acute renal failure. He NEVER ate wet food--only Hills' Prescription c/d. I contacted our state FDA office and they are testing the remaining food to try to determine if it is contaminated. I feel certain dry foods will soon be included. Please do not hesitate to contact your state FDA to get further testing done. All brands of dry food need to be tested as well.
THIS IS TO LET PEOPLE KNOW THAT IAMS FOOD USES REAL ANIMALS TO TEST ON. THIS IS ACCORDING TO PETA. I WOULD NOT FEED MY DOG ANYTHING THAT TESTS ON LIVE DOGS AND CAT. THANK YOU FOR THIS SITE. KAY

is it safe for dogs to eat petagree
Read the vet's article "The Tip of the Iceberg" at www.animaltalknaturally.com. He states that all gluten---wheat, corn, and soy--is bad. Please do not hesitate to contact your state FDA. They will respond to your complaint if your information indicates your pet became ill after eating any pet food. Louisiana FDA responded very quickly.

PURINA IS SAFE!!! IVE BEEN FEEDING IT TO MY DOG AND HE IS IN TIP TOP SHAPE I HIGHLY RECOMENDIT AND IT IS NOWHERE CLOSE TO BEING ON THE RECALL LIST ! IT IS SOFT AND SQUISHY ON YOUR DOGS TEETH BUT ITS DRY!!!!
I feed my 12 year old lab Beneful. She had what I believe was a stroke yesterday that lasted for 20 minutes. She kept falling and her front and hind legs were giving out. She came out of it, but in reading the symptoms online, a possible cause of strokes is rat poison. I read the Purina web site today and they said their products are NOT on the recall list. I hope this is true but still plan to throw out the food and cook her rice tonight.
I stopped feeding my dog the Nutro packets after hearing of the recall. He seems fine, no symptoms. Should I still have him tested? He's really fussy about food but he's eating the new food Blue by Blue Buffalo Co., it's sold at Petsmart.
I know that the nutro max soft food packages were on recall to, but are the canned food from nutro max on recall to. Should I be worried about giving the canned food to her? If I should, Petsmart still has it on shelfs. What should I do, my dog don't even want to eat her dry food from nutro max because she was used to eating the soft food mixed with her dryfood.
Alpo should be on the list. I have two dogs in renal failure and they are my only two that eat wet food. I have a licensed rescue. Please contact me if you have had similar problems. sharonpate@yahoo.com
My little Cockapoo was just admitted to the hospital, with elevated PH Levels, Jondus, Bloody Urine, lethargic, etc. She began these symptoms yesterday afternoon, 24 hours after feeding her from a brand new can of Iams (Beef & Rice), which is not on the recall list, but the date code falls in the same time period of the recalled food (the Factory code is different then the recall). My other dog which does not eat wet food is fine. (datecod 6348 factory code is 4583)
Be careful about how you are throwing out the recalled food! Stray animals might get into your trash.
Good luck to all of us. This is maddening!
I was using Eagle Pack wet food for my Scotty and she stopped eating and was vomiting yellow foam, I switched to Life abundance hard dog food that was invented by a veterinarian. I use Merrick soft cans to mix and the Merrick is holistic and the best product on the market by far. my dog just loves it, reading the labels will make your mouth water. LET'S FACE IT AREN'T OUR PETS/CHILDREN WORTH IT????
This is so sad. I feel for all of those who have lost their special friend. we lost our sheltie who was 13 yrs old. he had trouble chewing his hard food so I switched him to wet--pet pride. he went from 55 pounds to 32 pounds. he had kidney failure. we had to put him down. I'm so glad our four cats didn't get any. I also fed him alpo like #78. The prime cuts in gravy. we still cry about him, knowing this could have been prevented.
My 12 week old puppy started vomiting and isn't drinking anything. I took her to the vet but noone seems to know what is wrong with her. She is losing weight really bad. I have had her on Eagle Pack and Pedigree. What is the first signs something is wrong if it is the recall food. I just called another vet and they told me to take her off the Pedigree dry food.
My 10 yr. old black Lab "Louie" who has never never had an acccident in our house, had diarrea all over the living room last night. He never came over to my side of the bed and placed his cold wet nose on my arm to alert me he needed to go out. He smells really bad. He is eating Pedigree Dry Dog food. I am going to call the Vet and take him in. I wonder if Pedigree will be added to the list.
We feed our german shepherd & toy shelti Pedigree dry dog food.
Our Shepherd has become increasingly sluggish in her movements, and less playful. I was beginning to wonder if she was depressed.
She has also been vomiting & drinking a lot of water.
She's been showing signs of back pain, too. If i try to pat her on her middle/lower back she sort of flinches away, like it would cause her pain. She was also limping around and having trouble with the stairs over the weekend.
A trip to the vet's in order, and we're taking our dogs off the Pedigree food, even if it's NOT on the recall list, something's definitely not right here. I suggest anyone feeding their dogs Pedigree, wet or dry, to do the same. (The dry has been recalled in Asia - http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0WDP/is )
Good luck everyone. :(
My Boxer Rio eats Pedigree Lean canned mixed with Iams dry. Neither of these foods are currently on any of the bad food lists but she is not doing well. She has been moping around for the last few days, following me around the house like she is afraid to let me out of her sight, and eating poorly. She can't seem to get comfortable. She got a shower today which usually perks her up but to no avail.
Tomorrow I am off to Trader Joe's and Pet's Mart to look for help.
Pedigree dry dog food- Our Border Collie dog is eating grass alot and won't eat this bag of food. she has never gone on a grass eating binge before. She keeps raiding the cat bowl instead of eating her own food. She acts depressed. I am wondering about this food now , but realize it could be just a sickness of some sort. I just don't know! I will not try to feed this food to her anymore just in case! they say the dry food has been recalled in asia, so why not here?
I am very upset. My little rat terrier has been drinking water this week like there's not tomorrow. He peed in the house twice...once on the carpet, and once on the bed. He eats Cesar wet dog food and Purina Fit and Trim. I need to take him in and I do believe one of those foods is responsible! Anyone else having problems with those foods?
This web site let me know that ol'roy snack sticks were on the recall. My dog has always ate them. But now they are going back to the store asap. But it did not mention dry dog food by ol'roy, do you think its o k ?
Debra- After months of experimenting with food combinations, I have my pug on a mix of Cesar wet dog food and Purina Beneful Healthy Weight. Before we settled on this she'd been having consistancy problems and occasional vomiting (this was long before we learned of the recall) and she hasn't had any more of those problems.
As far as I've seen Cesar has not been anywhere near any of the lists. I'd only worry about the purina now that dry foods are starting to be kicked onto those very same listings. I've decided to take her off of the beneful and go to Petco tomorrow and talk to someone about a more organic food. They should know all the latest information on any foods being sold (I've heard Natural Balance to be highly recommended). If I'm not sold I'll be putting her on a "human food" diet for a while (rice, simple lean meats... nothing processed).Just remember. Don't panic and take advice from a professional vet into account before you make any major conclusions or decisions. And don't be afraid to get a second opinion--the food may not be the problem just as not everyone gets salmonella from licking a bowl of cake batter. I wouldn't want to assume that he's being poisoned when, really, he may have diabetes or something of the like.
I hope this helped...
~Kris
For the past weeks, I have been reading and researching dog food. It disgusts me to find this tragic loss of our pets could have been avoided. It all comes down to corporate greed. Menu Foods knew of this problem weeks before the official recall was made. I have switched my 3 dogs to a food that contains no corn (diamond food recall) and no wheat (menu foods, del monte). I prefer to feed my 3 boys a combination of dry and canned foods. Sadly, I came to learn recently the canned food was made at one of the Menu Foods plants. How do I know there was no cross contamination????? For my own peace of mind and for the health and well being of my family members - I am now cooking for them.
Hope this site helps everyone -http://petsitusa.com/blog/?p=210
I am at the point,If it says wheat gluten,in the ingredents, I am not gonna feed it to my 3 dogs. I feel for anyone dealing with a death or illness of your pet. My dogs are part of my family, and I love them like they are family!
Help! Like so many pet owner's out there...I'm confused. I know that wheat gluten is a no-no but, what about wheat flour as one of the ingredients listed on the food container? My head is spinning from trying to keep up with what is and what isn't. I'm so very thankful that almost all the time I have cooked meat, rice and chopped veggies for my little Sheltie. But, I do buy dog treats and now I'm seeing that some of those are being recalled. I would take all the dog food on hand back to the store or stores but, you know what...I have bought too many different types of treats in too many different stores so, to be on the safe side I'm tossing them all in a plastic bag and dumping them into the garbage. I hope the plastic bad will keep wild amimals away from the food when it's picked up and taken to the dump. God help our little pets!
I have checked Pedigree dog food, both canned and dry, and haven't found anything wrong about the dog food sold in the USA. And their name isn't on the recalled brand of food, and they DON'T use the wheat glutein supplier that was used in the bad, recalled food. Although my dog hasn't shown any bad symptoms, I figured I'd check anyway and am happy that Pedigree canned and dry food isn't on the list.
My dog showing symptoms today..... not eating, lethargic, just laying around. Will continue to watch her for vomiting or other signs before taking her to the Vet. Don't want to panic yet, can't afford the expense, if it's a false alarm. She is fed Beneful Healthy Weight dry food and Mighty Dog Can (no pouch) Also gets treats daily, which are "Pet Pride" bacon style strips. None of these are suppose to be a recall........but I will only feed her a diet of rice, chicken and beef until all this is cleared-up, at this point "I trust no pet food" She is loved dearly
Read this message from Pedigree. I was worried about names being added to the list. Who the H knows if anyone inthe pet food industry is being truthful. Made in the USA doesn't mean "one of our ingredients is imported from China." The RAW diet is always an option! http://www.pedigree.com/petfoodrecall.asp
I want to trust Pedigree.
my two cats have died from this food and now we are being told oh well. nothing anyone can do for you.we also have 4 dogs that got sick but we where able to save them. can someone help us.
dana
have my 9 yr old shep/chow mix on Canidae Chicken and Rice for a year now with no problems.... an excellent food ..... But I sometimes mix it with Pedigree Lamb & Rice choice cuts because she likes it. Haven't used the Pedigree Lamb & Rice for probably a month but yesterday I mixed half a can in with the kibble (Canidae) and I now have a very sick dog.... diarrea with a good amount of blood in it. She's been sick for about 24 hours now.... I thought Pedigree was safe! Apparently not. She doesn't have the other symptoms though but she is not drinking at all and seems to be in pain. Will call my vet in the morning ... Comments?
Our dog Polo is allergic all meats, wheat and most other grains as well and I am allergic to the garbage being used for fillers in some pet foods. Both our dogs now eat rice, eggs (cooked) with the shells for calcium and protien, a handful of broccoli and cauliflower along with a tablespoon of flax seed (omega 3) and cooked potatoes. They are thriving on it. For treats we put potatoes through a French fry cutter about 1 1/2 inches long and cook them in a microwave oven until they start to turn brown. They too are well recieved as treats. Polo weighs in at 150 lbs and shows no signs of the allergies that plagued him not too long ago. Every morning they get potato treats and a boiled egg, (with shell) because I cannot eat my breakfast in peace until they do. They also get vitamin E. Hope this helps some of you 'and' your irreplaceable pets find a better choice of food. Another added benifit, 'no' preservatives 'and' peace of mind!
i feed my cats nine lives can and hard food is it bad too . i feed my dogs pedigree dry dog food is it bad too . and o'roys dog biscuits
We lost our beloved 7 year old Beagle "Molly" last week. Symptoms appeared two weeks before her death during our move to a new home. She was lethargic, had loss of appetite, slightly bloated stomach, and increased water drinking. Her main food was Pedigree canned food, chicken and rice was her favorite and we would mix it with extra chicken or hamburger. She also ate dry dog bones - either ol'roy, or milkbone. We took her to the vet and she had a host of problems! Shocking for our normally healthy dog. She had pancreatitis, high alkp, low red blood cells, low white blood cells, and low lymphocytes. We had more tests scheduled, but she went down so fast over the weekend, the vet said he couldn't save her and we had to say goodby so she wouldn't suffer any more. My heart is broken. She was so sweet and loving. I don't know if it was her food or not, but I am certainly suspicious. Our other beagle, Peaches is a picky eater and didn't eat the canned food, only the chicken or hamburger. She is fine and we only feed her home cooked food now. I miss Molly so much.
I've got a 13 year old Rott with sarcoma in her right side and we're fighting hard to enjoy her remaining time and now this! I began spoiling her with canned 'special' food when her appetite went bad, and of course it was the first stuff to be called BAD, and I steadily moved from bad to WORSE! Ir is a major miracle my dog is still alive, it is like I am trying to kill her and keep herin the same day. We love our pets & it is killing us too.
I have two dogs one on Purina Puppy chow and other owas on Beneful..well the one on Beneful was having bad bowls and i thought it was from worms took him to vet wasnt worms..He was put on flagyl and chicken with rice cooked by me for few days well..the recall comes out and i wondered if that was what made my baby so sick. I kept on cooking him reg foodlike steak, lean ground beef, chicken with brown rice and veggies he is all better. I am beginning to think all dog and cat food should be pulled. Think they waited too long to let us animals owners know.
thanks cynthia for the website to pedigree. I have two dogs and i only feed them pedigree hard food .
I have not had any problems. I had just went out and bought a new bag. Im a little nerves to start them on this new bag any animal lover can understand. pedigree is not on the list as of today. But im still hesitant .I think even if the soft food was on the list i still would not feed my dogs the hard food .I am so sorry for your lost of your loved ones . If you go to your human society on line they will have a list of food recall.

I stopped feeding my dogs pedigree dry about a month ago. Just decided to try a better food such as newmans organics. Now after learning about the recall I've decided to cook for my dogs. Today I noticed that one of them threw up grass. I've been on pins andneedles sence this recall. I sure hope all the pet owners out there just stop buying the food for now. Figureout a way to cook for your animals and be done with it.Even without the poisoned food the dog food industryhas been feeding our pets garbage! Please everyone don't take the chance wondering which pet food to buy! Cook rice, pastas, turkey, chicken, veggies WHAT EVER IT TAKES. Just don'thand over your pets life why your wondering who'sbeing honest with you. The mighty dollar is talking.
I feed our dog Ceasers and he has been drinking more than normal should I worry?
Does the dry dog food harm your pet?
Is Pedigree on the recall list AT ALL? One of my 2 dogs started having diarrhea today and is lethargic.
were going to have to make our own food to stop these pricks from killin gour animals.
pedigree really should be on the recall list. my dog chief eats pedigree little champions and it does have wheat gluten in it. he was fine until he started eating this pouch dog food. now he has all of the current recall symtpons. loss of appetite, drinks water like crazy, and really bad diharria
my little koko min pin eats pedigree small crunchy bites in the past 3 weeks i have had her at the vet 3 times shes been really sick loss of uraine control ,running diharria, vomitting, excessive drinking of water i knew nothing about the dog food recall until the last vet visit i have another younger dog rat terrier he was doing fine i thought.I am an over the road truckdriver i left koko the really sick older doghome with my mother last week.well while out on the road the younger dog lost bladder control, and also started vomitting as soon has i got home i took them to the vet he done a blood test on both dogs elevated liver count in both dogs but very bad in kokos i took both off the dog food made my own food since friday both my dogs seem much better.does anyone know where i can send my dogfood off for testing
MY shepherd had many of the symptoms, drinking more and more and more, then the increase in urination, started peeing in the house, then # 2's in the house and passed away too fast. Pedigree dry dog food was main diet. I think of the supplement industry, which I know a little about - how many different manufacturers? - but essentially only 3 or 4 companies that supply to them. If it grows eat it, if it doesn't grow I wouldn't eat it and neither will my next dog.
I just recently built a website where those who has suffered horrible losses or experiences with there pets due to the recent pet food recall are posting their stories. It is a great way for people to vent their problems, tell their stories and even post pictures of their pets. The food companies are NOT taking any responsibilty for this horrific nightmare we are all going through and maybe this website can make a difference. They forget, pets are a part of are family too. We need to hold them accountable.
Go to www.petfoodnightmares.com to share your Thoughts.
is caeser dog food on the recall and skippy too.i have had my dog's on ol roy cuts and gravy for some time now, till i found out about the recall.now i feed ont of them skippy .i also have a male pekingese who loves caeser dog food. he has been peeing more then normal. iam watching him closely.thank you for this site.my heart goes out to the people who have lost their loved pets
This is truly a nightmare from hell, how could we have not known about all the crappy ingredients & filler's in their foor. Our precious pet's trust us & we trusted the food we bought for them. How can they sleep at night!! Hope all the money they made helps them now!! All of you have to band together and take them down. So far my 10 dogs & 5 cats are ok, I have been cooking for all of them and so can you. Just think if no one bought anymore of their poisoned food how their empy pockets would feel. Maybe then the'd understand how important our pets are. They will NOT get away with this, remember what goes around comes around, maybe not as quick as we'd like to see it but it WILL !! For all of you who lost your pet's my heart goes out to all of you and your pet's know it wasn't your fault.
M little Qtips (a tiny toy poodle,) her diet was: Cesar Moist food and Science Diet Dry food. Pupperoni treats, and Little tiny Bisquits "from Old Roys and Iams"
She became ill Tues. Feb. 20th, and died Friday Feb. 23rd. Something got her. Her primary vet. told me she ate something wrong because she was vomiting, but was treating her for her scratching at her ear. She became lethargic, wouldn't eat or drink. I kept contacting our vet, she just kept changing things and said just wait and see. She had a bad seizure of Friday night in my arms, we rushed her to an emergency vet clinic where she later died. After this the food recall came out. We feel it may have been something she was eating but we will never know what happened or why.
Does anyone know if Pedigree wet food is safe? I have 2 Dachshunds that have had blood in their stool and my mother has a cock-a-poo with the same issues. The website says that Pedigree wet food is safe, but i read a posting from a gentleman that said Pedigree was pulled off of the shelves in Asia. I also give them Iams puppy cookies which i am not sure about. Anyone have any info out there because none of the dog food companies seem to know what they are talking about.
We have been feeding our Shepherd Nutro Lamb and Rice dry food for several years. Just about first of the year, we purchased a new bag, and another since then, that poor dog has been so sick with diaghrea and vomiting. He has had really foul gas. No symptoms of kidney probs, though. They have not added that food to the recall list, but that food is toxic also. He has been on home cooked food for last 2 weeks and is finally acting like he feel better. His stools are back to normal.
First of all...my heart goes out to all of you who have lost your dear ones. I have been feeding my dog dry pedigree for almost a year and 2 weeks ago my dog started vomiting and was very lethargic for 2 days. I took him off the food immediately and started cooking him chicken, rice, and eggs. He has recovered thank the good lord! I am going to just cook food for him and NOT take the chance of feeding him another brand and then having that one cause him to become sick again.
I am researching natural dog foods. What's everyone's opinion on these? Solid Gold, Life's Abundance and Canidae? Has anyone recently purchased any of these since the recall and if so how are your dog's doing on them?
I have reviews on some of these products.
My dog has been eating mighty dog food for years. He has never been sick a day in his life. A month ago (right after the recall), he began drinking alot of water and having acccidents in the house, even in his sleep. Hearing of the recall I took him to the vet immediately where I was told he was in kidney failure (high Bun and creatine readings- also small traces of blood). We put him on a low protein diet and went back for more blood work 10 days later to see if the diet was helping. This time not only did the blood work come out with Kidney failure, but now he also has liver failure. Another week later more blood work and the liver readings are becoming even higher. He is currently being treated with low protein diet (which he hates) and liver pills. We have also ruled out all diseases (at least that the vet can think of to test for). I am being told that since he didn't show crystals in the urine that this isn't from the food and that there aren't any liver problems being reported along with kidney failure. I've been searching the internet and see a few people out there have pets showing the same or similary syptoms. Also the ASPCA web site is still advising they don't have a definate cause for the food tainting. My questions to anyone out there who's pet is going through this, did you urine alaysis show crystals and is anyone's pet also experiencing liver difficutlty along with the kidney failure. Best of luck to all the pet owners out there and my deepest sympathy to anyone who's lost a pet or going through this.
Not everyone is reporting christals. As a matter of a fact, few are. Half or more are going into liver failure. I've heard from over 700,000 people in this matter.

I hope that this awful tragedy with dog food will spur people into looking at holistic foods for their pets. A lot of people are uninformed about what to look for in the ingredients of what they are feeding their pets. A good protein source should be in the first few ingredients. Beneful sounds good on TV but corn is one of the first, if not the first ingredient on the list. I know several breeders, and everyone of them will tell you not to feed your dog Purina. Anything that you can buy at the grocery store or WalMart type stores is not going to be a quality dog food. Please check the Internet for Holistic foods and your local pet stores and ask questions. If you know good breeders, not backyard breeders, who only want to make a buck, but someone that does it for the love of the breed, ask these people , they are very knowledgable. Our pets are worth spending a little extra on. There life span is short enough the way it is, don't make it any shorter.
my dogs all ate sciencediet and they were having diearea a lot bloody stools and i was losing dogs too....they drank a lot of water .....my little chihuhahua ate ceaser foil and she died....so i believe that brand should also be looked into.....april 1 i believe it could have started sometime in feb-april....
I'll bet lots of foods get checked out very deeply after this last recall (yesterday)
My Fiancee and I just lost our red rednosed female pit bull. We had her since she was four weeks, she was a recue. She grew up to be one of the smartest, happiest, ham of a dog. She could dive into the pool and climb out on the ladder. She went everywhere with my Fiancee. Last week she started throwing up and would not eat. It got worse, and she could not hold her urine. She went to the vets overnight, had an IV to replace her fluids, and started doing better. Unfortunately, we did not know that Old Roys canned food from WalMart was on the recall list. To help her eat, he gave her a can. She died, after one last chase after the garbage truck, her favorite. My fiancee is devastated. He lost his best buddy, and blames himself. We thought the stores had pulled everything recalled. The wicked list is growing.
You have to trust your instincts and your pet's. I bought 3 bags of dry food, mixed them together in a big can. One of them, the Purina, smelled real bad, and the other 3 dogs did not want to eat it. Now the smell is gone, it just probably got diluted by the other brands, but our other 3 dogs are very thirsty, and one is a little blouted, which I had thought was just a weight gain. So tonight, I am going to the store for brown rice, meats and vegetables, and will stay up late to cook. And I will keep on making them their food until this poisoned pet food is out of the food chain. I knew it would show up in dryfood, and it might even make its way into the human food chain, since it is in wheat. I wish I had trusted my instincts. Last Friday I bought canned food not on the list, but after we lost our dog, I returned it just two days later, to find it was not on the recall list. The dogs could have eaten it! So you all be careful, and good luck!
Darlene? Which kind of Purina dry food did you have your dogs on?
You were probably smelling the Animal Digest (manure) used to produce several brands of foods.
if your dog consumed nutro or natural choice DRY dog food and you believe it made them sick, visit this message board - http://www.voy.com/211161/
Given the lack of truth and Honesty, or lying to the American People by this Administration, I would encourage everyone to ask their Congressional Representatives to THOROUGHLY investigate this issue. It is likely the same contaminants have made their way into the feed of Pigs, Cow, Chicken and Farmed Fish. This is likely to be alot worse than what is being told via MAIN STREAM MEDIA. Dont take this warning wrong. We are talking about the integrity of OUR Food supply and the Health and Safety of Our Children and Ourselves.
I have a red nosed pit.. she is my baby.11 yrs.. I took her to the vet and she had all the tests for this dog food recall, however she still has all the symptons that everyone is talking about.. I give her Beneful and until now I thought it was safe. Well ITS NOT.. her legs give out on her, drink a ton of water, gas, lethargic...I am freaking out after reading this about Beneful... She will be fed chicken and rice from now on... THis is horrible what we are all going through.. My heart and prayers go out to all that has lost their pets over this... WHat a sin....Not fair...
Beneful is currently being pulled off the shelves. The official recall will be stated shortly.
Please visit Petconnection.com. They are very current over there, far more current than the FDA!
Thanks for the link!

My dog Sadie just started her first bag of Petigree little bits on Friday and tonight she has had uncontrolable diahrea and has been drinking a lot. I was checking tonight again but it is not listed on the recall list.

If she is showing any signs of illness DO NOT feed her the product!

The best way to deal with the whole dog food recall scare is to feed your dog homemade dog food. The official FDA list provides an updated list of contaminated dog food. http://hubpages.com/hub/Dog_Food_Recall
Last summer I noticed my Shi su was constantly urinating. At first I thought it was diabetis. Then I thought about a Dog Treat we had recently purchased. It was a Chicken Jerky. We stopped giving it to him and he stopped urinating. Now we switched to Benefil. At first he was very perky and now he is urinating and sleeping. Can you send me an updated list of the Pet Food recalled please.
Sonya,
Sign up under the "fan club" area of this page. The hubpages people will let you know of any new pages produced by me.
This is the most current list available at this time.

I would personally watch out for home made food too, especially since melamine is in human chicken, pork and flour...so far! My brother feeds his 14 year old dog pedigree canned. So far he's okay. But I keep warning him to be carefull. Has anybody else had problems with pedigree canned.
my dog eats dry food its purina kibbles and chunks and he has pet's favorites genuine treats and he has been shitting(running not solid) and throwing up alot
my dog is only 4 almost 5 months old... what do i do
Ashile,
Are you looking for a safe pet food to feed or what help is it you need?
Susan Peters
Get him to the vet right away. Make sure what you are feeding him does NOT include, corn, wheat, soy, or by-products.
Susan Petets
Do not feed your dog Purina Beneful Healthy Weight. We have 2 Deer Chihuahuas and we feed them this food. Lately, our eldest (who is 2 years old and WAS completely healthy) has been panting a lot, has a fever, and his eyelids are more red. Purina Beneful contains soy, and corn gluten. Our research has shown that these ingredients could be contaminated. We just bought a brand new bag two days ago from WalMart. Also do not feed your animals PUPPERONI products. They contain wheat gluten.
Good advice, Vic and Monique!
The sick pets from this food are the very reason for the Class Action against Purina for the contents you mentioned as well as euthanized dogs and cats - listed as by-products on the label.

I found a website earlier today that listed the ol roy 10lb bags of 4 flavor treats as being on the contaminated list. I had been giving these to my two dogs and they have been sick, I also have been feeding them the ol roy kibbles, bits & chews. I have included a link below to a website from the FDA with ol roy products. You can also check on other brands here. But personally I will not trust any of them right now.http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/petfoodrecal
DO NOT FEED YOUR DOGS PURINA ONE LAMB AND RICE DRY DOG FOOD........OUR 7 MONTH OLD BULLMASTIFF ALMOST DIED WHEN I SWITCHED HIM TO IT. THANK GOD I GOT HIM TO THE VET IN TIME.
Tammy,
Purine One is not on the recall list but is involved in a Class Action against the company for making untrue statements about their product and the use of road-kill, etc in the making of the pet food.

I
I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE KNEW HOW GOOD FLINT RIVER DOG FOOD WAS? IM NOT PUTTING BO BACK ON STORE DOG FOOD.
Tammy, I am a distributor for Flint River. www.frrco.com/122135. Flint River tests for Melamine every 15 minutes during processing...I was cooking for my dogs and cats during this recall when I found this pet food. I have 9 dogs and 16 cats. My pets have been eating it for almost 2 months now they love it and they are so healthy and vibrant. No chemicals, all human grade food, no rendering plant crap and all of the ingredients are made here in the US by USDA plants. Flint River certifications and inspections exceed the FDA requirements. I have sold this product to many large and small rescue agencies among other individuals and eveybody loves it. Please go the above the website and check it out for yourself I feel you will be satisfied. Flint River offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee. I will tell you that my English Setter doesn't have runny eyes anymore and he doesn't vomit undigested food like he used to. My shep mix used to cry when he stood from a sitting position, now he doesn't. One of my dogs used to shake for no reason occassionally, he doesn't shake anymore. All of their coats, eyes and gums look brighter and healthier than they every have. Even my feral rescue cats don't vomit anymore. I have done rescue work for over 30 years. I owned and operated my own animal shelter for most of my adult life with over 90 dogs and cats. I work closely with law enforcement and area animal shelters in rescuing, educating and volunteering for over 30 years now. I am vet tech by trade. I farm now, eating all organic and raising my own meat, grain, hay, wheat, oats, cattle, goats, dairy and chickens. We still rescue dogs, cats and horses. I have to honestly say that I have never been more impressed with any dog and cat food as I am Flint River, I wish they made large animal feed too! I am sure I can get you other testimonies if you need them. Feel free to email me at cbwdbs@yahoo.com. Thanks!
I was just wondering what kind of symptoms an animal would present i
Sarah,
The drink lots of water, act lazy or not well, don't have control of bathroom habits and throw up.

Hey, has anyone had problems with Purina Little Bites? We have two dogs; a Peke and a Schnauzer mix. The Schnauzer mix seems perfectly fine, but the Peke's been pooping in the house a lot lately, and the past three times, he's put out diarrhea. Now, he's kind of persnickety about mud, and it's been muddy, but he used to just poop on the patio; not in the house. I looked up the recall, and saw that diarrhea is a symptom of the pet food recall, as well as loss of continence. So, I ask you, do you think our little girlie-boy dog is just not wanting to get his fur wet, or is he sick? Also, has anyone had problems with Friskies, Purina Indoor Cat Chow, or 9 Lives? My cats are fine, but I'm scared. I'd feed them organic/homemade, but I'm too poor to feed them anything but store bought. (And the poor should be able to have to joys of pet parenthood too, shouldn't they?)
All of those foods you mentioned are not on the recall list but are included in a Class Action for the sickness and loss of pets.
Expensive food of quality (expensive doesn't always make it a better food as we've seen with Science Diet and others) costs more to purchase a single bag or can but you are money ahead when the container is empty. Simply, pets eat about 1/4 th of the quality food, have less fleas, and health problems.
Susan
Tammy or anybody else inerested. I can send you some free samples of Flint River pet food if you like. Flint River had many different products offering grain free food, omega fatty acids, glucosamine and chondrotin sulfate, among other good stuff. All made here in the US not China. Email me with your info and address cbwdbs@yahoo.com I would be happy to send them out.
I ordered a bag of flint river and Bo loves it.......he has gained all of his weight back and more. JUST ME DO NOT BUY ANY PURINA PRODUCTS...THEY ARE NOT ON THE RECALL LIST YET BUT i HAVE A 7 MONTH OLD BULL MASTIFF AND PURINA ONE ALMOST KILLED HIM. WE HAD 800 DOLLARS IN VET BILLS BECAUSE OF THE DOG FOOD. PLEASE DONT FEED IT TO YOUR ANIMALS. I contacted purina about the food and they sent me a free coupon for a 40 lb bag..........I refuse to use it. Purina doesnt care about your animals or they would recall all of their foods.
a little over a year ago our boston terrier of 10 years died from what was diagnosed by our vet as cushings disease. the symptoms are so similar to the dog food additive symptoms. i wonder if it cld have been the dry dog food.
Tammy I am so glad that your dog loves the Flint River. If anybody wants free samples e mail me cbwdbs@yahoo.com or go directly to www.frrco.com/122135. Proceeds from my distributorship go towards my animal rescue. Please read my latest rescue story on Hubpages "Homeless, Lonely Stray Dogs" Parts I and II. The rescued dog, Zena will go to Purdue for an MRI to see why she can't walk. The MRI will cost me a min of $1,000. I have had this dog for 4 days now. Zena is such a sweet dog. She is now at least able to stand and wag her tail, but she can only take a few steps before needing to lay down again. X- rays show no broken bones. Thank you.
Sarah, When Bo first started the symptoms were..........1st day wouldnt really eat but drank lots of water so I thought maybe cause its been hot outside. ........2nd day his poop was a little runny but not bad still drinking water.........3rd day throwing up, runny poop, but would still get up and go outside..........4th day bloody vomit and poop and wouldnt do anything, just lie around, wouldnt eat or drink..............5day he went to the vet and severly dehydrated and lost 22 lbs in 4 days...........he was at the vet for 4 days on an iv and then he came home and had to be fed baby food and ice for 2 days............It has been 9 days now and he has gained 27 lbs back and is eating flint river and doing wonderful............please stay away from purina.....If your dog acts like something is wrong please take them to the vet asap because if you dont you will lose your animals to this food....if we had waited another day Bo would not be here
Tammy, a friend of mine was just feeding Purina Puppy Chow, her pup started urinating frequently but nothing coming out. I told her to stop feeding the Purina and withing one day the pup acts normal. This friend is not receiving any income and awaiting her first disibility check on July 1st. She can't afford to take this pup to the vet. The pup was a stray that was dropped off at her house. She is caring for it temporarily or until she can place her with somebody.
Oh, don't forget that June 17 - June 23 is the National Pet Food Boycott. Too many pets have died due to these pet foods and we are standing up to the pet food producers. Feed a jar of baby food if you don't have time to cook. That should hold you over until the boycott has passed.
Susan Peters
What am I supposed to do to boycott?
Thanks, I was looking for this
Tammy,
During National Pet Food Boycott week try not to purchase any commercial pet food. Also, don't stock up on pet food before the Boycott week. During this week make some homemade pet foods or feed baby food. When sales drop off for these companies they will have to take notice. These companies are going to offer discount coupons, release new pet foods, etc during this time. The pet food companies will do everything in their power to prevent people from Boycotting.
Most important! Tell everyone you know about the National Pet Food Boycott for the Week of June 17 through June 23rd!
Susan
I am posting this on my myspace too. people need to get the word out there, I dont think they realize how big this is or how many animals are dying or sick.
Tammy,
Thanks! We need to get the word out. This has gone on way too long. Three full months, can you believe it?
Susan
I agree ...its probally been going on longer we just dont know about it..............I didnt know until Bo almost died.
This boycott is a good thing. In my opinion I don't know why anybody in their right mind would ever buy a commercial brand pet food again. Unless they take out the chemicals and preservatives and have everything meet the needed requirement standards...And let's face it that is a long time to come. There are too many good holistic/organic foods available that save in the long run on a healthier pet, less shedding, more energy, no tainted scares and less vet bills, less vet bill makes the holistic/organic foods less expensive in the long run. Bless the hearts of those that are trying to save thier pets with home cooked meals and holistic/organic food, now that's the way for all of us to learn. All of us have had a wake up call. Now it's time for all of us to make a difference. Boycotting for one week will make a dent but it will do little in the long run. The only alternative is to boycott commercial products until they change their ingredients and their standards. Just my opinion of course!
Sherry,
Have you looked into AAFCO ? AAFCO are the people the pet food companies have to answer to about regulations, etc. AAFCO has only one full time employee and that is the receptionist. You should read about the AAFCO requirements of pet food. There are suggestions but no actual compliance standards, etc. It is a really sad deal.
Since AAFCO is the only support we pet owners have to certify our pet food is good when purchasing food through Wal-Mart or the local stores I would put my trust in a Company which has established it's own high standards and doesn't need a receptionist to set the mark. Look for a company like Flint River and others which are proud of the foods they produce.

My dog has just been diagnosed with Pancreatitis. Does anyone have a dog with this condition? If so, what are you feeding it? I need a good, low fat dog food.
We have a 10 mo. old labrador who is on Life's Abundance as well as our other 18 mo. old labrador. We've been blessed to have no problems to this point because we've always had them on this food and they've been very healthy. However, 48 hours ago we had three separate training sessions with our youngest in which we used pieces of Pupperoni treats and Milk Bones and she's since become very ill. The first 24 hours she had unbelievable amounts of diarrhea, strange extreme salivation running from the sides of her mouth, lethargy, and would eat and drink very little. She was also very unusually skiddish, noise sensitive, and literally jumped at shadows -- very, very unlike her. We got her to eat some small portions of boiled rice and lean chicken after which she started drinking more. She's since regained her energy but the diarrhea returned after a 24 hour hiatus and has not stopped as she now loses control every 30 minutes or so (almost as if it was cyclical). Has anyone else seen any problem with these treats? They were recently purchased so I thought they would be okay after so much caution the companies had to take -- was I naive or is this unrelated? We're leaving for the vet in a few minutes but I want to be as informed as possible. No problem with our other dog who had only a bite of the treats (did not have the training sessions so did not have the large portions) and is 30 pounds larger). Please help. Any advice out there??

Jacquelyn,
I have been accused of being rude. But, here is the bare truth. .... You are being neive! The training treats you mentioned have years of history of pet death and recalls.
Susan
Thank you for the blunt, and necessary, response. Today the vet was also cautious about the treats but was more concerned about the scab/bump that appeared on her cheek that same day and that she also showed signs of scratching at the site, her eyes, and her ears in the first 24 hours indicating that she may be having an allergic reaction toxin in bite of some kind. Nevertheless, even if that is the cause (which I still question), i'm grateful to have the opportunity to pull my pets off all commercial products. Luckily, my pup seems to be responding to the medicine and has not lost any weight in these past three days despite such severe diarrhea.
What natural treats are safe to use, if any? The ones in the line with Life's Abundance have all natural ingredients but list venison as an ingredient and I read something about venison also being a product of concern on another site but it's not listed anywhere else that I've seen. What is the guideline for treats? Is it better just to use natural human food?
Thanks again for the advice in a scary time.

In response to Jacquelyn.
I personally feed a combination of Flint River, Life's Abundance and Canadai. I just started distributing Life's Abundance and I am already a distributor for Flint River. All are safe products. Flint River has some great safe treats. I use the food of all three and the treats from Flint River and Life's Abundance. Even Life's Abundance treats with the venison. If you have concerns you can address those personally to Dr. Jane Bicks the creator and founder of Life's Abundance Pet Food by telephone every Thursday pm. The conference call is just part of the wonderul foundation and support associated with Life's Abundance Pet Food. Anybody who would like to participate in this phone covnersation can contact me directly cbwdbs@yahoo.com. The phone call with Dr. Jane Bicks is very enlightning, educational and free, except for the phone call itself. No obligations to purchase any food either. Dr. Bicks can not diagnose pets over the phone but she sure can give some great advice.
My cat just died suddenly , she was about 3 years old , last night she was fine playing ect. & about 1 hour later she was in the garage laying on her side & sounded as she was in pain & panting heavily , I picked her up & layed her on a chair to see if she was hurt , no signs of any injury , about an hour & half she was dead , we gave her Purina Friskies sea food sensations cat food , could it have been contaminated ? ....................Thankyou Larry
Larry,
Friskies is not under recall but has been responsible for uncounted pet deaths and illness. There is a Class Action formed against this company due to the injury to so many pets. I am so sorry for your loss! Shame on Friskies!

My 98 pound german shorthair Brutus passed away on Thursday July 26. I had taken him to the vet July 9 because he had been vomiting and had labored breathing was lathargic and seemed to be on his death bed. After doing blood work the vet said his white count was doubled and he probably had an infection of some sort so he gave him a shot of antibiotic and sent home some pills. He lost his appetite for a few days but slowly started to feel better and was almost back to his old self. After starting to eat again he had another spell and I thought I was going to lose him again. I decided to switch his food and treats just to be cautious but I honestly did not think it was the food. It was a good brand Purina Beneful, healthy weight but I switched anyway. Brutus was soon back to his old self and we were releived. The day he died I left early for work and my mother came over to watch my kids because my husband was out of town. Brut was happy and healthy when I left at 6:30 am. Around 10:00 my mom called frantic saying she thought Brut was going to die. His gums were grey he had vomited and was panting and could not even stand up. I couldn't believe it I was trying to think of anything and everything that could be causing it, still not thinking of the food but when I asked my mother if he had eaten anything she said his bowl had been empty so she had filled it up with not the new food but you guessed it the Beneful, healthy weight and almost immeadiately he began to get sick and died an hour later before the vet could call back. My mom had no idea that we had even suspected the food and feels terrible.. The truth is until he died I really thought he had just had an infection and had switched the food just because he also had seemed not to care for the food. But now I am certain there is something wrong with the Beneful healthy weight food. Brutus had been perfectly healthy for a weekand a half before he died and before this past month had never been sick in his 8 years.
Jennifer, my dog Bo did the same thing and we were feeding him Purina One. I thought to be one of the best foods out there...Boy was I wrong. Im sorry for your loss. Purina needs to do a recall on our of their food, it seems like none of these companies are taking responsibility for this. That makes me so mad. I switched Bo to flint river and havent had any more problems. Please everyone stop buying Purina. I took bo to the vet and they thought he had parvo, so we had him tested 3x and it came back he didnt have it. I hate these people for killing our pets and acting as tho it doesnt even matter. they are not only killing our animals but a huge part of our familys. I wish there was more we could do.
I have a six year old German Shepard/lab mix. She ate Pedigree all her life. In April she began urinating more. I took her to the vet and was told she is pre diabetic and to feed her purina fit and trim. 2 weeks ago she started with bloody stools, bloody urine, and vomitting. She has lost over 15 pounds and is skin and bones. The vet has run stool, urine, and blood samples and cannot find anytghing. Could I have gone from one bad food to another? The keep putting her on antibiotics, but she is not getting better. I am curently consulting another vet, but neither seems concerned about the food issue. Any ideas?
Jill,
No corn, wheat, or soy EVER! Both of the foods you mentioned have Class Actions filed against them for killing pets. Get your pet on a pet food which does not use these three grains or "meat" or "by-products", each of these are killers.

Our pet Rosie, a 3 year old Chihuahua was poisoned from Chinese made Bestro's Jerky Chicken Strips #77849 00006 1 We have this contaminated bag. We have three Chihuahuas and one of them died one month ago. Shestarted with vomiting and dehydration and then we were told she may either have an obstruction or have been poisioned. Since our dogs are inside dogs and we are with them at all times outside we thought it was an obstruction. Finally the doctorsaid he was almost positive it was some kind of poisoning at Elwood AnimalClinic in Glendora, California. They were going to scope her but before thatcould happen she died July 21, at VCA in Fountain Valley, California. We gave our dogs Waggin train and Bestro's Jerky Chicken Strips. Our Sweet Rosie (our chihuahua that passed) loved them and and she would eat all the treats we put down for the other dogs too. Up until today we never had any idea what happened but now with Wal Mart pulling this quietly from their selves. (I brought my treats at Wal Mart, Glendora, California) I truly believe that is why she died. We called Wal Mart and are getting a run around. We need help. We are totally heartbroken and will never forget Our Sweet Gypsy Rose! Since Wal Mart had this problem before, why didn't they pull all that Chinese junk off the first time? Our Rosie will still be alive! Is Wal Mart concerned about people and their Pets or Money? You figured it out.Gene and Gerri Richards San Dimas, CaliforniaRosie's website:http://www.dogster.com/dogs/614878Web site to help you:http://www.howl911.com
The only product I ever fed my dogs was Newman's Own brand. It is fit for human consumption, and is made with Bell and Evans chicken which is free of any hormones. Another very good food is Solid Gold..check them out. Stop buying the cheapest junk you can find at Walmart, and give your pets the consideration they deserve. I now cook for my five Yorkies..and they are very healthy and happy. I make a mix of overcooked brown rice, ground up chicken and liver, carrotts, wheat germ, eggs and canola oil. They love it and never ever have a problem with their digestion. Spend a little time researching or cooking yourself. You probably won't have to deal with the devastation this junk from China has caused.
Annette,
I'll bet your healthy Yorkies don't have a problem with fleas or other pests, either. I'm proud of you!

My little boston will be 6 in May. She has been on beneful and little ceasars. But she is drinking lots of water, and does an epileptic or stroke like thing always to her right side, weakness, vomiting, some loose stools, ear infections, took her to the vet they say she has more than normal bacteria in her GI track. After reading about the beneful I am really worried. Took her off the little ceasers today because she vomited again after a nibble. Back on chicken and rice. I thought beneful was safe!! I have another vet appt. on Friday. I am running out of money and I don't know who to trust regarding her food. I am literally running out of money. Help.
Mollie,
No! Beneful is any thing but healthy. No corn, wheat or soy of any kind in any diet or your Boston will die. Pull those grains from her foods and she may live. You shoud see the seizures go away and most of the other conditions as well.
I'm posting a new web page just for you. My prayers are with you girls.

My 2 year old Pointer died like a year ago Because of Beneful. I KNOW IT was beneful.
I have had pets all my life. Many dogs, over the years. We have never had food problems before. We currently have two dogs, a Lab and a Rotweiller. We have been feeding them Beneful for the past few years without any problems. In March, 2008, the Rot was suddenly sick, lethargic, no appetite, drank a lot of water, ate dirt, and had diarrhea. The Lab refused to eat the dry food at all, even after my wife tried mixing in table scraps. Turns out she is a very smart dog.I changed their diet to fresh cooked chicken and hamburger, rice and some veggies. The Rot immediately started to improve and had more energy. My wife again gave him the dry food for a day and he went back down. This time, he is not coming back out of it.My wife's parents also used Beneful, purchased from the same store, for their Doberman. She has been devastated by this food. She can hardly stand anymore and has to be helped outside. All the symptoms sound just like the problems from 1.5 years ago with canned food that included the wheat gluten and melamine.
Dave,
Corn, wheat, and soy will cause all these problems in cats and dogs. Melamine was just a cover up for poor quality ingredients and false advertising. These pet food companies would love for us to believe their products are a healthy choice for our pets when in truth...the pet food is killing our pets.
My prayers are with you.

I switched my 2 Golden to PMI Exclusive recently and as of last night both are suffering from muscle weakness. The female was the firs to go down and is currently at the vet. The male is now showing the same initial signs. No fever, no swelling of joints but total muscle weakness in the front and back legs. Any ideas

It is the corn, wheat and soy causing the problem - these grains are toxic to cats and dogs.

My Brother fed my dog lil ceaser dog food while I had to go on a trip for the New year 2009, I got back and he was vomiting, diareah, I took him to the vet and they diagnosed him with renal failure, he was completely healthy until this incident. We did everythin we could and he survived till June 2, 2009. How can I find out if it was this dog food I fed him? He never was sick till he ate it. I searched the recall page and couldn't find it there. My heart is torn and i am searching for an answer. Please help me!

Does this include dry food and Purina brands.
