Ask Susan Peters Meow Mix Ingredients Review:

My cat never seemed to be satisfied on this diet. She always asked for more and was pretty pushing about it. She wanted to eat at odd times and several times through out the day. This bag of food went pretty fast. Angel was caught several times eating dog food in addition to the cat food she was served. Susan Peters and Angel

This bag is made up of 75% corn. Wonder why Angel was hungry!!

Use of by-products. By-products are ingredients used which are not fit for human consumption. By-products are often floor sweepings from a rendering plant. "Animal by-product" is rendered product from animal tissues, exclusive of any added blood, hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents except in such amounts as may occur unavoidably in good processing practices." Pet food labels contain the words "meal" or "byproduct" on the ingredient label. Inedible byproducts such as bone, fat, heads, hair, feet and condemned offal are used in commercial pet food. These materials are sent to a rendering plant for processing into pet food products.

My cats tell me all I need to know about Meow Mix. I alternate between Meow Mix and Whiskas and my cats love both. They are healthy, happy, frisky, and well cared for. The ingredients in each of these foods is wholesome, untainted, and promote healthy growth, and as long as my cats continue to enjoy them, I will keep buying them. Points? Let's not get carried away. End of story.

My dogs eat the special kitty dry food too. They have their own but if they can eat the cat food they will. I don't feed it to them they just help themselves, I put the cat food up so the dogs can't reach it or so I thought, they usually find a way to get into it. Anyhow, my dalmation is acting strange. He is lathargic and has loss of appitite. I have stopped feeding the Special Kitty DRY.....I NEED TO KNOW IF THEY HAVE TESTED THE DRY FORMULA..I will check back..I'm really concerned, I have 10 cats and 3 dogs. All of them I have recued from shelters or the streets. HELP

Meow Mix is NOT on the recall

Cat's need to be 'free fed'. Just leave a bowl of dry food for them and they will eat what they want. This is the way their system works best.

I agree that cat's should be free fed, unless they are obese. As far as Meow Mix, maybe it is not on the recall list, but it has a lot of dyes in it and usually makes cat vomit alot. The experience with the vomiting I have had personally. I owned two separte horse boarding stables and had up to 20 cats in each barn. All were sick when eating the meow mix. One of my boarders worked for a feed manufacturing company and explained to me the dye situation. This was 10 years ago of course, I don't know if Meow Mix has changed it or not but I did stop feeding it. I then became an educated consumer on how to read labels and I am learning everyday like the rest of us.

My three children, cats, love Meow Miw. They snack on it all day long and at night I feed them Friskies in a can.

Tim,

Please don't confuse continual dining on a product as loving it. Studies have shown most cats are in a state of starvation after eating Meow Mix. The product is made up of mostly corn and other ingredients which leave the cats desiring more and more of the food. The cats are trying to get the basic nutrientents their bodies require and because the Meow Mix has so little of what their bodies need the cats continue to eat, eat, and eat. Both of the products you mention are responsible for thousands of cat illness and deaths, though neither are on the recall list. Love your children? Stop starving them and don't risk their lives with these cat food brands.

Ask any responsible veterinarian and they will tell you that the regular cat food you can buy in the grocery store is bad for animals. They're made of filler grains and corn and have very little of what cats and dogs really need: meat. When was the last time you saw or heard of a cat or dog in a corn field hunting corn? That may sound funny, but I'm not joking. Grains & corn are not a natural diet for cats & dogs, and corn in particular has no real nutritive value for these animals.

You might ask "well then why hasn't my cat/dog died already if they're starving on this stuff?" The answer is because animals of any type (and I'm including humans here) have adaptability, and their bodies do everything possible to survive. Just because your cat/dog is surviving and is energetic & happy doesn't mean they're getting the nutrition they need. Such problems in diet typically don't show up any time soon; they usually show up in the form of illness later down the road.

Quality food costs a lot more than regular food, but it will make a large difference in your animal's longevity and quality of life. Check with your vet, but you'd probably be better off feeding them raw, fresh meat from your grocer than you would feeding them Meox Mix or any of the others. Organic meat is a possibility if you believe that or meats are tainted with hormones, etc.

Be well, everyone.

Yuck, I think i would rather feed my cats cardboard then meow mix! they would probably be getting more nutrients out of it. I dont understand why people would feed this... its bad for the cats, they eat more of it then a good quality food, & their feces smells worse and is more frequent. Why not spend a couple more dollars and buy a good quality food, which will end up costing you about the same amount in the long run... saves on health visits too... cats are prone to UTI's, you think this GRADE of food is going to help prevent them?? I THINK NOT!! Do you cats a favor and dont buy junk!!!!!

I am so glad I happened to come across this website! Thank you, Susan, for all of the information you supply...I had no idea about how bad some cat foods are or can be for the pets we love. Everyone who has pets needs to know this information...I have immediately switched my cat over to a much better and healthier cat food without corn, soy, or wheat. I just couldn't believe some of the awful things I've read here...and just want to shout it to all pet owners so they, too, can make sure they are feeding their pets healthy foods. My cat, Scooter, and I thank you a million times!

Response to other comments--I used to feed my cats food of this variety too... All my childhood at least.. I did have my 2 cats on it (now 4) for a while (I think I used Purina) until I learned better (then again I was also going to declaw!)

I did try a test about a year ago.. I free fed meow mix coincidentally and then switched back to my brand (Exclusive which is 25 dollars for an 18lb bag) They ate 3 times more Meow mix than Exclusive so it came out to only 75 cents moer a month to feed them the better food!!!!

Free Feeding.. multiple cat households often have difficultly NOT free feeding.. Some cats are fine free feeding.. it's just like chips though.. if they are there, they want them. My cats are GREAT on 1/2 cup a day (a quarter in the morning a quarter at night. I do mix in about a tablespoon of wet food to make them eat it THEN. And watch them because unfortunately my 2 oldest ones will give up the food to the younger ones because it's what I taught when they were babies (the babies had special food and were bottle babies)

In any case, thanks for the score I couldnt' find meow mixes ingredients anywhere and I'm trying to explain "crappy" food (he feeds meow mix) to my friend.

I have always fed my 3 house cats meow mix and all are very healthy and happy. I think its a matter of opinion. I have always free fed them and have dog food setting right next to the cat food and they have never tried to tear into either one.

I'm glad your cats are doing better than my cats did on Meown Mix. One of my cats was starved all the time. I am happy things are going well for you and your cats. Thanks for letting us know.

Pet Owners  says:

Susan has already explained the ingredients, which should leave no doubt that feeding a cat that stuff is like feeding a human only snickers bars every day of their life.

Cats are strict carnivores and many folks don't realize that that's not an opinion, but unchangeable, biological fact. Vets hawking food because they apparently "forget" that this species is, indeed, carnivorous certainly contributes to pet owners falling into the $$$$$-first brainwashing.

Feed kitty dry, kitty guaranteed to get UTI and/or Bladder issues and/or Diabetes and/or throwing up and/or did I already say Urinary Tract Infection? Good, that again. Throwing up, Diabetes (worth a second mention too), ear infections and/or hypothyroidism and/or renal infection and/or crystals-stones and/or liver and/or pancreas and/or bowel issues....

Cats would not get these things if they were not eating dry kibble/high carb foods. Their bodies were not designed for cereal. That's why they eat mice and birds and are always prowling for prey. Can't change their species.

They are a carnivore, no in-between. They need canned/meat. The REASON they even get Diabetes is from high-carb foods (dry and canned -- it's the carbs = sugar.)

Ever wonder why cats are notorious for not liking to drink a lot of water, and when one acts thirsty, it's a health Red Flag? They are designed by nature to get the moisture from their prey (food.) They are programmed from birth to do so.

I'm glad your 3 cats are fine, but it's certainly more a matter of durable kits so far than opinion. Please spread the word to everyone :>)

Don't believe? Just look at their teeth, the way they're designed -- to eat meat -- NOT cereal which rots their teeth (contrary to popular "teeth cleaner" myth because vets hawk dry food and should be sued for malpractice for it.)

Thanks, Susan:>)

(I was gonna ask you to give all the dry foods 0s automatic :>)

i have fed my cat Chica meow mix seafood medley dry and the seafood pouches for her 2 years. She seemed to like it but now i know she was starving. Two nights ago i opened up a fresh bag and later that night she threw up a huge hairball and then threw up some more.I thought it was just an upset stomach from the hairbal lbut She started to get listless and cryed if i picked her up.By the time i got her to the vet it was too late. She died on the operating table. I bought this at walmart and have called but have not gotten anywhere yet. Please do not feed your cat meow mix. i am devastated by all of this.

i've been feeding my cats this stuff for two years, and they like it, but i'm switching them off the stuff NOW. i did some research not too long ago, and found out that this a very low-quality product, about 75% CORN... and not friendly for the cat's digestive system at all. pet nutrition experts say that dry cat food in general is terrible for cats because it's basically like feeding them fish-flavored cereal, which doesn't have the moisture cats need to stay properly hydrated, and the carbohydrate overload will lead to severe health problems incuding UTI and feline diabetes in a lot of cases, and the cats aren't getting the protein their bodies require, and this brand is one of the worst out there. i wouldn't reccommend it. your cats might eat it and seem to like it, like mine have, but that's because you've gotten them addicted to junk food, not because it's nutritious. if you are feeding your cats this stuff, you might want to consider changing their diet like i am.

Sam  says:

Hrrrm. People don't seem to get it.

Do your cats come home from their hunt and drop ears of corn at your feet as a present? No. They drop birds, my friends, or mice or whatever furry, MEATY thing they caught.

Of COURSE your cat runs to its food when you open the bag of Meowmix! It's starving, remember? It's not getting the meat it needs. Most cats eat until their nutritional needs are filled for the day- thats why when you feed garbage like Meowmix, cats want to eat and eat and eat to try to meet their needs. Yes, they may seem happy and healthy and active. But you know what? Try switching to a better quality food and see how they'll be even happier.

Johnson  says:

Why would you feed your cat a food that is mostly corn? A little bit as a filler is not the end of the world but, as a main ingredient???? Not all foods out there are as bad as some poeple say but Meow mix is, without doubt, garbage.

Sadly, 7mos after switching to Meowmix cuz my mom used it for her cats, and it was cheaper, I lost my 10yr old cat to kidney failure, now only weeks later, turns out my 14yr cat kidneys have just started failing. Am using Hills Prescription K/D and hope to get some more time with him. I find this strangely coincidentle...Vet says it isn't the corn gluten, then why both cats all of a sudden? Noticed Blue Spa isn't rated but I have switched to that for the cat I inherited from my moms passing, no corn gluten of anykind, just don't know where it stands. Still feels like Meow mix is the culprit.

Meow Mix is not good for your cats at all! Watch the video at the bottom of the page. Their is nothing in Meox mix that is good. Wheat, Soy and Corn are NOT good and by product means the parts of the animal not fit for consumption. Check out this video. I'm taking my cats off it ASAP!

I'm shocked....never heard anything about this. I've been feeding my 8 yr old cat meow mix all her life and now I'm convinced to switch. What is a GOOD cat food?

Hannah  says:

My cat. Started bleeding from his urinary tract a few weeks ago so we took him to the vet. We found out he had a bladder infection then died of kidney failure. Meow mix is the worst. Drycat food in general isn't the best. It should have 3.5% or lessAsh. Ash causes crystals to form so get as little as u can wetcat food with 3% or less is best.
