(Autumn 2009: Be sure to watch for Streep's latest, "It's Complicated" a romantic comedy, coming out Christmas Day 2009...looks like a good one! Check out preview video at end of column)

Don't miss Streep in "Julie and Julia"...She's Wonderful!!!

Hilariously, haughtily, poignantly, nasty in 'Devil Wears Prada'

Meryl...THE actress of our age!

Although one hubber has already noted Diane Keaton as a popular "senior" actress, I would like to propose the wonderful Meryl Streep for this honor. With 14 Oscar nominations she tops every actress and most actors for being recognized for 'greatness' by her peers.

In fact, Diane Keaton herself noted that Streep is "my generation's genius"*

And Robert Redford has said of Streep, "There's simply no finer craftsman in the business. She's as good as it gets."

What a range of roles she's mastered!

With more Oscar nominations than any other actress...Streep's career reaveals the vast variety of characters and movie styles...drama, comedy, thriller, even an upcoming musical (film version of "Mamma Mia") Her roles have ranged from mothers in Kramer v. Kramer (first oscar) and as mother in the gut-wrenching Sophie's Choice (Oscar award).

Mamma Mia airs Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009, at 4:15PM on MAX channel.

She was a sassy avoiding-reality irresponsible daughter in Marvin's Room (with co-star Diane Keaton) and a trying-to-cope-with-humor-and-dignity daughter in Postcards from the Edge (Oscar nomination).

She handled true comedy roles in Death Becomes Her and over-the-top-goodie-goodie in The She Devil with RoseAnne Barr and Ed Begley!

She played the sentimental lover role in The French Lieutenant's Woman (Oscar nomination), Bridges of Madison County (Oscar nomination) and Out of Africa (Oscar nomination). Lately she's moved into 'executive' roles in dramas like The Manchurian Candidate (2004), the comedy, Devil Wears Prada (Oscar nomination) and thriller, Rendition (2007) with Reese Witherspoon.

Serious physical acting, where she did many of her own stunts, were required in the action thriller The River Wild with Kevin Bacon.

More physical stamina was needed for several scenes in Out of Africa, where she plays a Danish upper-class woman now trying to manage a farm in Africa during the outbreak of World War One. Some major safari type moments.

As an Oklahoman, I remember her serious drama gritty true-life role from Silkwood (Oscar nomination). I also remember her in the recent Nicolas Cage movie Adaptation, in which she jplayed the author of the non-fictionbook that he was trying to adapt as a screenplay.

Earlier roles...even a lesbian!

I first remember the long golden hair that many of us remember from Kramer v, Kramer in Woody Allen's Manhattan playing his ex-wife and lesbian!

She played an unhappy wife (based on true life Nora Ephron's marriage to Carl Bernstein) with Jack Nicholson in Heartburn.

And these are just the ones I truly remember! There was the Australian story of the woman who thought her child eaten by a bush-dog of some sort, there was the violin playing teacher to kids in NYC. the recent, and box-office disappointing Lions for Lambs with Robert Redford and Tom Cruise. There were early, early movies in the 1970s...lots of theater work...way too much to go into here!

Hello Desert Blondie! What a wonderful hub! I simply love Meryl Streep. She is a perfect 'ultra intelligent witch'. Her personal power is just amazing! Devil wears Prada, I simply cannot forget it. And in Rendition - she is just the best. I really wonder how does she look like in real life?

yeah, I would also be interested to see what she would look like without makup/Botox/Plastic surgery.

I have just never cared much for Meryl Streep as an actress (I'm weird, I know...lol) but this was a great piece of writing!

My! You three up early! OR you're not on Calif. time, as I am.

To dobsc400, I think we'll see a more accurate "real" Meryl appearance in the upcoming Momma Mia as she won't be wearing wigs and stiff fashions as she has in most recent movies.

To Kim, Thanks for writing compliment...put it together quickly last night after seeing the "request" and since Streep is one of my Favs it went together quickly. (I must watch 'Postcards' once a year!)

Hard to believe she's considered a "senior." I think perhaps we should reevaluate the age one is called a senior, personally. Anything below 70 is just too low, IMO. Especially with medical science improving so rapidly and, as a result, our life expectancies increasing. Great hub. :)

Hard for me to believe that many of today's great actresses are "senior"! Diane Keaton as hubber, Kim Cantrell wrote about, Two time Oscar winner Sally Field, would also be a great hub topic for a senior actress of acclaim...Norma Rae, Places in the Heart, Sybil, Steel Magnolias (one of the best grief scenes ever!), Forrest Gump, and on and on! Thanks for stopping by!

I have always admired her acting skills. Her and Sally Field have had more challenging roles, I think, than Diane Keaton -- whom I also adore. Taking on roles involving accents, lifestyles, attitudes and cultures -- Meryl Streep and Sally Field are hands down masters of their craft. Great article!

I agree that Fields and Streep have had "more serious" acting challenges than Keaton has chosen but if you ever saw Keaton in REDS (a true story, which makes me love it even more)...or in The Other Sister or Interiors, it's easy to remember what she's capable of...no accents though!

I agree with your sentiment about it being hard to believe Meryl Streep is considered a senior actress. One of my favorite films of all time featured her and Albert Brooks - Defending Your Life. It's easy to see why Daniel (played by Brooks) fell in love with her at first sight!

Great hub!

Oh, Crash! You and I are destined to be hub-buddies. There are SOOOOO many people who've never even heard of this movie, let alone refer it! I adore (excuse my hyperbolic chick word) this movie! Rip Torn, and, if I remember, Lee Remick are the attorneys? What a movie!

"Prada" was a definite favorite role of mine for Streep! BUT she's fantastic as Julia Child in "Julie and Julia"...am glad to see her making movies that aren't as serious as "French Lt. Woman" and other heavy dramas from earlier in her career.

I think she's great too! And, re: surgical touch ups...so what? If she's had...it certainly looks good on her! Sometimes I look around at the general population and wish MORE people would be more attentive to their appearances!
