Mesothelioma Disease – What's with the Lawyer Commercials?
71Mesothelioma Disease
Mesothelioma lawyers and asbestos lawyers seem to advertise heavily on daytime TV commercials, but what exactly is mesothelioma? Mesothelioma disease is a particularly bad form of cancer that forms in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers the lungs and other organs. Mesothelioma cancer is almost always the result of asbestos exposure, and life expectancy after mesothelioma disease is diagnosed is usually pretty short – months to a few years.
Asbestos Exposure and Asbestos Disease
When asbestos exposure occurs, microscopic asbestos fibers are inhaled into the lungs and will sometimes become embedded.
The asbestos fibers may scar the lungs, leading to asbestosis, and they may penetrate further into the mesothelium to later form mesothelioma cancer.
The mesothelioma disease usually takes twenty or more years to develop, and people that worked with asbestos in the 1970s may currently start showing signs of disease.
Most (but not all) commercial products were no longer manufactured with asbestos after 1978, but since asbestos health effects can take 20-30 or more years to show up, there may still be many people who worked with asbestos who are just now starting to show symptoms.
In addition, much of the asbestos containing materials that were put into place prior to 1978 remain, and possibilities remain that asbestos exposure can still happen even to this day.
Mesothelioma Lawsuits
Mesothelioma and asbestos lawsuits are often related since this illness is almost exclusively a product of asbestos exposure.
This is why you will see many of lawyer commercials targeting occupations that worked heavily with asbestos or around asbestos.
An attorney will often specify an occupation like one of the following as more specifically at risk:
- Construction Workers
- Auto Mechanics
- Building Engineers
- Railroad Workers
- Shipyard Employees
Family members were also subject to secondary asbestos exposure.
Mesothelioma Lawyers
Though a lawyer or an attorney is in it to make a buck, it may still be beneficial to contact one if you think you may have had significant exposure to asbestos or believe that you may be starting to show symptoms.
It cannot hurt to learn more and find out your rights, and you may be able to get a free medical exam.
There may also be the concern that the money allocated to pay-off mesothelioma lawsuits and settlements is not unlimited, and at a certain point in time the chance of receiving compensation for mesothelioma disease may greatly diminish. If one feels that their past asbestos exposure puts them at risk, it may be a good idea to see a mesothelioma lawyer sooner instead of later.

I was brought up in Clydebank where my father was a sheet- ironworker in John Brown's shipyard, the so-called pride of British shipbuilding. Your article relates to many stories he told me: making snowballs out of asbestos, kids hugging their fathers wearing asbestos-laden overalls, and women washing these clothes, all innocently unaware of the danger they were in.
