Have you heard the news about BPA in plastic water bottles? If you haven't, you should keep reading because it could mean the health of your family and loved ones. BPA is a chemical commonly found in recycled plastics with the number 7 on the bottom. Food containers and drink containers bearing this mark have a much higher chance of leaching the deadly BPA chemical into their contents. The main reason for this is because the #7 resin compounds are often made up of scrap materials that have been reused many times and hard to keep clean.

Luckily you now have safe alternatives to these dirty plastic bottles. Some companies like Nalgene have decided to revamp their plastic water bottle lines and provide BPA free plastic water bottles, but a much safer alternative all together are metal water bottles. Other companies have turned to other polycarbonate resins all together for their bottles. Nalgene has started using a copolyester resin in response to customer outrage of the use of #7 plastics in some of their water bottle lines.

Metal water bottles on the other hand, at least those that do not corrode, are by far the safest bet when choosing a water bottle. There are several types of metal water bottles that are most commonly found on the market today. Also, a few popular brands seem to really dominate the market. Those include Sigg, Klean Kanteen, and a few others.

Sigg is by far the most popular brand on the market right now as they have been making their bottles for many years. They are most known for their aluminum water bottles, which were their first product and still continues to be their flagship product. They have added all sorts of fancy designs at this point which has probably added to their popularity, giving the owner a little sense of style with their aluminum water bottle. The only problem with Sigg is that they use a proprietary resin of some sort that they bake into insides of their bottles as a liner to avoid corrosion of the aluminum.

Klean Kanteen water bottles are a close second when it comes to the metal water bottle market right now. Their focus is on stainless steel water bottles. They have done a good job of pushing the environmental reasons to use a reusable metal water bottle. Let's face it, those 24-packs and 36-packs of 20 oz. water that they push on you at the grocery store may be cheap, but you get what you pay for. Multiply those 24-36 bottles by the millions of families across the country that buy them every week, and that becomes a pretty large number. Not every family recycles, so a good portion of those bottles are filling our landfills. If you think about it, it is a pretty good selling point for reusable metal water bottles in general, and could help save the planet.

Metal water bottles are safer than most plastic water bottles, and they are also much more durable. Some companies selling metal water bottles even guarantee their bottles for life under normal use. After many years of use, one could even recycle their metal water bottle after they were done with it, or wanted to upgrade. Many reasons point to the fact that metal water bottles are much better for household use, camping, sports, and other uses. The most important ones are that they are safe, reusable, and durable.
