The visible path of a meteoroid that enters the earth's atmosphere is called meteor, or commonly called a shooting star or falling star. Traveling at thousands of miles an hour, meteoroids quickly ignite in searing friction of the atmosphere, 30 to 80 miles above the ground. Almost all are destroyed in the process, the rare few that are survive and hit on the ground are know as a meteorites.

When a meteor appears, it seems to ("shoot") or quickly across the sky. and its a small size and intense brightness might make you think its a star. If you are lucky enough to spot a meteorites, a meteor that makes it all the way to the ground, and see where it is being hit, it's easy to think you saw a star fall.
