Sleep Study

The most common method to diagnos sleep problems is with a sleep study.

A sleep is usually done at clinics and hospitals to study your sleep habits.

Most sleep studies require a reference from a physician in order to do the study.

What Goes On During A Sleep Study

When I went to my Doctor and told him about my sleep problems, he refered me over to our local hospital which has a sleep study lab in it.

I had to report to hospital at about 9:30 pm.

After entering the hospital, as an outpatient and filling out the appropriate forms, I instructed to get dress to go to bed.

Once ready for bed, the sleep technician started hooking me up with a whole bunch of electrodes. The electrodes, to the best of my memory included the following:

  • Sensors on my legs,
  • Sensors at the base of my nose at both nostrils to detect airflow,
  • A sensor in my larynx to detect snoring,
  • Sensors by my eyes to detect REM
  • Several sensors around my head for reasons that I am not sure of.
  • An oxygen sensor (called a nocturnal pulse oximetry) that is a red laser attached to your finger to measure the oxygen content in you blood, see if your oxygen content drops off and your body is being starved of oxygen..

All of these sensors were connected back by wires to different electronic machines.  There is the constant sense that you will disconnect the wires as you turn over.

So with all of these machines hooked up and you are feeling like a Frankenstein experiment, you are told to go to sleep. If you have have trouble sleep they can give you some sleep aide medicine. If you are sleep deprived enough, falling asleep is not usually a problem.

So once you get to sleep, all of these instruments are measuring your sleep conditions. If there are enough incidents with the alloted time, the technician will come and fit you with a breathing mask and hook you up to a CPAC/BiPAC. Then you are told to go back to sleep.

As you sleep, the technician starts adjusting the air pressure and breathing methods to find a optimal setting to assure that you do not stop breathing.

Once a morning comes, you are released and the study goes to the Physicians, who then come up with a treatment plan, if you need it. Generally, these are fittings with CPAC or BiPAC machines. Some severe cases will have either an operation to correct the throat blockage. Some people require a tracheotomy, where the CPAC/BiPAC machine is connected to inorder to help them breath.

An Other Method Of Study

Sometimes, the patient is given a nocturnal pulse oximetry device that he places on his finger at home. This is used to see if his oxygen level is dropping and they he has a threat of problem for sleep apnea. If no problems, the patient is does not need to have a sleep study done.

Also, this procedure is done a few weeks once a patient has a CPAC/BiPAC machine in order to test that the machine is adequate for the patient and the treatment is working.
