Mexicana Airlines
67Mexicana Airline
Mexicana airline, full name Compañía Mexicana de Aviación, is the flag carrier and operates out of the country of Mexico.
Today Mexicana is a huge brand serving many routes across Mexico and internationally, but this was not always the case. Mexicana has built itself up as a company over the space of nearly 90 years and today stands as one of the largest and best airlines in North America outside of the U.S.A.
History of the Mexicana Airline
The Mexicana Airline was set up in the 1920’s by two Americans living in Mexico. Initially the company was an air transportation company and soon started forging a good business by winning government contracts to transport wages to employees in the oil fields of the Gulf of Mexico.
By the late 1920’s the company had gone international with flights to America, the international flights were further increased throughout the 1930’s.
In the 1940’s the fleet of planes grew and many domestic routes were added to the flight roster.
Throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s more routes and planes were added to the company and a flight attendant school was opened. The first jet service also started.
In the 1970’s the company had grown to such a size that it was operating flights to other south American countries and had the second largest fleet of Boeing 727’s in the world.
From the 1980’s to 1990’s the company kept changing although growth remained stationary but this all changed in the mid 1990’s. In 1995 the company merged with AeroMéxico building a huge Mexican airline carrier that started to grow at a fast rate in size and reputation.
In 2005 the company was sold by the government to a large Mexican hotel chain thus making it a private company which has grown further.
