Michael Jackson - PTSD from Commercial Accident

Abnormally Normal - Michael Jackson - Why He Wasn't a Child Molester

At age 46, I could never understand the fascination with Elvis. Why did people continue to follow him, and visit Grace Land? That changed last week, when I opened my Yahoo to see that "Michael" died to young. What? I thought this must have been some kind of joke.

I am going to write how Michael's bizarre behavior is perfectly "Abnormally Normal". In other words, normal for the circumstances. First, let me tell you that, I have never met him or even attended one of his concerts (Although, I wished that I had). I can't moon walk, sing and definitely do not have a pair of his patented very cool shoes that allowed him to do the "Lean". My opinion is pure speculation, and is gleamed from public comments, news clips, and the like.

Most readers could agree that Michael Jackson was if nothing else, brilliant. He changed the musical landscape forever, crossed cultural and generation gaps. He was an advocate for basic civil and human rights. We could probably also agree that he was deprived of a normal childhood.

So why is a "normal" childhood important? I am not quite sure. However, in nearly ever horrific story that you read or distributing movie that you see...the culprit almost always has had a sorted childhood.

Okay, so there is much speculation about Michael's multiple surgeries. Was he transgender, transsexual or did he suffer from Body dysmorphic disorder? Did he suffer from Bipolar Disorder or Post Traumatic Disorder? I don't know, and only Michael and those closest to him do. I am not going to go into detail about much of these, just want to touch on the subjects.

Before you start complaining that I might suggest that Michael suffered from mental illness, just remember he was a civil rights advocate. That is, the civil rights did not begin and end with race, but rather we are still moving forward to remove barriers for those people who have any kind of illness. I beleive in time, he would have been more outspoken about depression and other syndromes, which would have created a huge new doorway, and help remove the stigam associated with behavioral health issues.

I will tell you that a person who suffers from Body dysmorphic disorder is obessed with their body of a part of their body. If they can afford it, they have mutliple surgeries to correct a defect that is not really there, and only in their minds. That certainly appeared to be the case in Michael.

Transgender or Transexual? Again, I don't know, but I do not recall hearing much hoopla when Tim Curry potrayed a Transexual in the 1970's movie the Rocky Horror Picture show. But, I do remember my reaction after seeing Michael's mini movie "Remember a Time". At first glance, I didn't even recognize the artist. At first glance, I thought I was looking at a woman. It was veryerotic and very confusing. You would see a woman's face, mascualine dance movements with a male voice. Google it yourself and see what I mean.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) requires that a person experience a traumatic event. While what may be traumatic to one person may not be traumatic to another. I have not read any traumatic events of Michael's childhood, but I am certain that there were many.

Absent, any remarkable traumas in childhood "aside" from his stardom, in 1984 Michael's hair caught on fire while filming a commercial. Now think about that for a moment, it was certainly a traumatic event. Imagine your own hair and scalp being on fire? The heat so tremendous...and what must go through your mind at that moment. Will I die? My face? You get the idea.

By almost all written accounts, Michael has almost always been rather reclusive, and just perhaps the 1994 accident was the final trigger for full blown out PTSD?

We all know that he suffered from depression which is a common Co-Morbid of common condition that people with PTSD suffer with. Whether the depression came before or after, does not matter.

Back to Bipolar Disorder which was formerly called Major Manic Depressive Disorder. In simple terms, it means that the person cycles from being very depressed to be over active. Each person cycles different and some cycles last for years.

A common attribute for people with Bipolar Disorder is shopping. In fact, these people will go on outrageous spending trips and often leaving themselves in financial stress or even ruin. We have all heard about Michael's extravagant spending sprees. Seems to fit.

Almost everyone knows someone that will disappear for a while, and then suddenly they have the next great idea. They always have the next great idea, and it always fails. You know the ones with Delusions of Grandeur. However, in Michael's case he could make his delusions grand and grander. Perfectly normal behavior if he indeed did suffer with Bipolar Disorder.

For those with PTSD, symptoms can present in many ways, physically and psychologically. Physical symptoms include headaches, unexplained body aches, upset stomach and the like. Psychological can be social withdrawal, inability to maintain meaningful or lasting relationships, and nightmares.

Nightmares are the big clue here, as people with PTSD often report nightmares and long to be able to sleep without the constant waking in fear.

It's not uncommon for a person with PTSD to try to recapture the innocence and to be overprotective of the innocent. Hence, many people with PTSD particularly women who are unable to maintain relationships with human adult, turn to animals, and the caring of children.

Why? I'm not sure, but I would think it is because children and animals are honest, beautiful and pure. Michael himself said something like that, and people thought that it was strange that he played with little children and had so many animals.

Yes, it was strange, but normal if he did suffer from PTSD and normal for Michael Jackson. He said himself, that he was a child, yet was deprived of his childhood. It's easy to see that he was constantly trying to recapture his childhood through childhood activities.

Child activities included pajama parties which is usually a more feminine activity. His Peter Pan fantasies, Neverland itself and so forth. He was desperately trying to create his youth, and he did, but never seemed to reconcile or make peace with it. Alice Cooper may have described this best in his song "....I'm a boy and I'm a man...". You remember it.

Back to Transgender. Again, I am not saying that he was, but he seemed to have a very maternal relationship with the young and innocent.

There is way too much analysis and speculation for me to write here. I just wanted to touch on the subject. So why is the world grieving over someone most of us have never met?

Because, whether you hated or loved Michael, he made you think, and therefore he touched your life. For me, if I was sad, I would reach back to my younger days. His music would bring me back those happier times. I guess, when he left, I felt that those happy times were gone forever.

I think you made a mistake there, the Pepsi commercial accident happened in 1984. Your views over MJ are quite right.

I totally agree with you. Not having a true childhood can really mess with your mind. Its sad how nobody acknowledged this and treated him for it so that he could have led a normal adult life. Rather they medicated him and in essence numbed him to it.

I agree with some of the facts 100%, there was an documentry stating how his dad did him so wrong in his teen years....When Micheal was younger he didnt hang or have to many girl friends has something happening to Micheal when he was little has Micheal been raped or child molested in his teens years those are the questions only his closet people can answer and thats his brothers and most of all his father

My argument is could Michael have been developing an sexual relationship with these kids brain washing there mind with material things, comforting then when no one else could planting a seed in there head stating that you are tooking care of and u will get want you want, getting into this kids minds and getting them to think thats its ok to have sexual Relation with same sex no one will know but the person above think about it

Unlikey, Peter Poeple with PTSD sometimes become oversexual like in the movie "The General's Daughter"

On the other end othe spectrum is A Sexual which is more common than you think.

The truth is, we we never know the truth, because no matter what TV tells us........we weren't there.

I am sure that people, doctors etc did try to find out what was at the route of Michaels problems..... If we all try to do it surely the doctors around him and family would have done, just probably never made it public. Nice hub, It is all so sad

I'll read the rest of this later, but yes, good analysis so far. You might want to mention that artists in general are childlike-it comes with the territory. So do golddiggers if you're a billionaire and some people feel you can spare a couple mil.

Also the allegations were ludicris...Michael was a gentle, sweet soul whose biggest sin was treating other people's children like his own. He said in an interview that before he had his own children he wanted children so bad he used to carry a doll around.

junomich thats a good analysis of what his state of mind might have been. His intentions may have been good but how does it look?Where were his friends and doctors? Why didn't someone say hey thats doesn't look right? All his ad visors, family, and friends, not one said hey Michael thats not a good idea. If all those people couldn't see the problem then, maybe, they shouldn't decide whats good for his children now. If the majority believe that the children are in good hands then we may be farther gone than we now. Peace

Sneakorocksolid. Agree, I do hope those children will be okay. My guess is that Paris and Blanket will be entering the stage light soon engouh. I wish they would all yell up ".Leave Us Kids Alone"

I mean their lives are confusing enough and now the media wants to add "Mommas Baby, Pappas Maybe? and "Mommas Mayber with Pappas Baby".

I agree with most of your article except for one point. You stated you never read anywhere about Michael having any traumatic childhood experiences. Would you consider child abuse traumatic? Michael was traumatized for most of his childhood -- I agree with you in saying he did not have a childhood -- but I have listened to hours of interviews, and documented stories of what he and his brothers and sister when through at the hands of their father.

Child abuse can cause PTSD, and can be "Cylic" That is, if they were abused then they abuse. However, the oppositi is very true as well. Abused children also grow up to be wonderful over protective parents, and the children are really the only humans that they can relate too and have meaningul relationships. Yes, I was being hyper-technical (I didn't read)

Rain  says:

PTSD sounds very likely. He probably relived the Pepsi nightmare everytime he got on stage. Imagine being up there knowing that at any moment something could go terribly wrong and you could be burned alive in front of millions. What would they do? They would watch the same as before. His fondness of children was probably a coping mechanism. When that was spoiled he had to drug himself just to get though rehersal,

geribelle  says:

ok...........how about not only "not" having a "real" childhood, but having a mentally and physically abusive one. But his star still shown as it was meant to. The lesson is "do not judge". Period.

It seems to me that Michael was abused in childhood by someone and that caused him to be the way he was,and then because of that behavior and his love for children and animals Michael was abused again by the media and that caused him more stress and confusion and the medications caused him even more problems. The real problem is I dont see anyone getting punished for what they caused to happen to him from beginning to end,I think several people are at fault not only just the drs. Im so sorry he is gone and his children are his becuse he chose them thats the only thing that should matter to anyone. He did cause you to think and he did make you feel to some extent what he was feeling, and he will be missed, its so sad and unfair to him and his loved ones and all who loved him.I just feel like Michael was a victim, a very talented, very soft-hearted, loving caring confused victim, and he didnt cause it all.

I was looking at some nice pictures of him and thought that he looked very beautiful at times. Yes it was confusing because his features and mannerisms where so delicate yet very masculine at the same time. I thought to myself, "He looks like an archangel". I now wonder if he was literally trying to live up to his name: Michael the archangel. He dresses up as one in a music video, wings and all. He was a very spiritual man and often about wanted to be like Jesus. I think that he could not identify with his earthly father (Joe Jackson - cold, abusive, promiscuous, dishonest), so he tried to identify with his Heavenly Father instead - not in a grandiose way, but an emotional one, it gave him comfort.

I think that he was simply trying to give other children, especially teenage boys, the attention that he never received from Joe. He didn't really have a father. From the time that he was 5 years old, Joe became his slave master and drill sergeant, physically abusing him whenever he missed a step or note. He wasn't allowed to call him "Daddy" and his Joe never hugged him or told him that he was proud of him. Instead, his father would say "I made you...." Michael loved it when Barry Gordy, Smokey Robinson or Marvin Gaye would spend time with him and hug him. I'm just so happy that he was able to have children of his own and fill that void in his heart.

Excellent analysis. I run a PTSD Awareness site on MySpace. I have had Complex PTSD myself since childhood and decades of experience and study on the subject. On my site I have from second one believed VERY strongly that MJ had not only PTSD but Complex PTSD. I stand firm to that belief and appreciate seeing here and on my site that there are so many others who feel as I do. Of course we most likely will never know for sure. We can however form our own educated opinions based on the symptoms of Complex PTSD and a lifetime of watching MJ grow up and exhibit most to all of the diagnostic criteria and symptoms as well as the actions of a PTSD'er, as you have so accurately described here. Thanks for posting this and to all who commented.

I know this was written weeks ago, but since MJ's death, I watched that documentary-interview of him from around 6 yrs. ago. And in that documentary, I saw MJ acting manic-I know because I am mild bipolar, and I have family members who are, and I have done a lot of study on the subj. The interviewer also said in the documentary that he noticed a change in behavior also. It was toward the end when he was giving Blanket a bottle, and MJ seemed agitated because he was fussing and he was trying to calm him with the bottle, (while trying to keep the scarf over his little head)and MJ's leg was shaking, and MJ was wound up. Then after that was the imfamous baby dangeling in Germany, where you can see MJ's behavior very hyped up. In between that time was the shopping spree. He was in an obvious manic state for days. Now, why would MJ put his beloved child in danger like that-no parent in their right mind would do that-but if he was manic-it makes 100% sense. There was a definite mood change in that documentary, the interviewer was even questioning himself on the voice-over as to why MJ had a mood shift.

You know you have bipolar when you have manic episodes, depression, and severe insomnia! I believe he also very well could have had PTSD, and I also had been thinking for many weeks, if not longer that he had body dismorphic disorder. If only he could have gotten psychiatric help!

My brother had undiagnosed bipolar, and in his suicide note talked about his severe insomnia and depression, he couldn't take it anymore and killed himself last year.

Would love to continue this discussion.....

Thank you writer for saying what I had been thinking for a while now!

Michael was a complex person. Depak Chopra mentioned that he though the surgeries were Self Mutilation which I had never thought of. About child molesters, they are habitual offenders. Michael had contact with hundreds of children and if he fit the profile there would have been hundreds of victims. Good book to read, Aphrodite Jones & Tom Messeros (spelling) wrote about the second trial. With Michael he had many issues going on in his life and your analysis is very telling on these counts.

As Tito Jackson said many, many years ago... The world is not ready for people like Michael Jackson. He is too innocent and pure in thought. Too giving for his own good. Some people will always take advantage of those qualities. May he rest in peace.
