Drugs:

We have heard that Michael Jackson demanded a controlled drug to be used to help him sleep. He wanted several hours of complete sleep ( silence) to enable him to function for the next day. This is not to condone a man who is dead, this is a questioning of what went wrong in his last hour of life.

Propofol: Diprivan Anesthesia

Propofol, or Diprivan is an anesthesia drug, which can not be administered by any physician who is not qualified to perform. In other words, it is a drug which requires certification in ACLS ( advanced cardiac support), and in most cases a certification in moderate sedation. This drug is a anesthetic medication and hypnotic which means it can cease the normal respiratory mechanism once it is administered. Many times, after a short burst of the drug, the patient is enable to breathe and requires ventilation support via an artificial airway or bagging support via the anesthesiologist, not a physician.

The induction of propofol is administered through an intravenous method. The medication does cause pain on administration which can be minimized by adding lidocaine (numbing agent) with the medication. The patient being administered propofol will become unconscious within less than a minute if given in a conscious sedation procedure, and will need respiratory support or observation until awakening. In the case of Michael, he may have had propofol in an intravenous drip, slow low dose form, where he would immediately drift off to sleep but still require constant observation of vital signs ( blood pressure, pulse, respirations, and oxygen saturation). This method requires a professional who is qualified in advance cardiac support ( able to utilize an artificial airway if necessary ) and provide medication support to maintain normal vital signs during administration. Was there a physician in attendance who was in fact qualified ? If there was a physician in attendance of this administration of a lethal medication, I would hope he/she was certified in conscious sedation and advanced cardiac support, able to maintain a proper airway, and have the necessary equipment to monitor vital signs. What we have heard seems to be questionable......

Relative Conclusion:

The conclusion is we have a icon of music who probably never went beyond high school education, talented in music and vocals, and yet demanded to have a medication not available outside of a medical facility to be given for sleep. That is not to say the drug could not be obtained from illegal sources or from outside the country. Better yet, I find it difficult to believe that someone in our professional community would enable such a request to provide this extreme treatment for insomnia and/or rest. This is wrong, and should be investigated as to what is appropriate, legal, and provided by certification.

Michael may have had the money to buy anything in his power, but there are limits in the medical profession where that behavior should not have been granted.

Great hub. It will be interesting to learn how this medication ended up in his home. I was also thinking today of Heath Ledger who was also having terrible trouble sleeping and took too many meds to help him sleep and died accidentally.I wonder if their star power, gives them access to more drugs than the average person can get. Or if it is their money that gives them access.

Unfortunately, there has been much about Michael's current use of drugs. He was a drug addict who depended on medications to make him feel good. It is not something that many people would become addicted to a drug unless they have some need to be in a euphoric state.
